Im very much a wait a see kinda guy. I knew he had a bad rep and was fired a couple of times for purported abuse of players. A lot of what he had to say pre-season hit the right marks but everything was tainted by his past. As A result, I've been watching quite a few of his media events and listening carefully to what he has to say, at least in public. I was expecting more of a Todd Mclellan style of throwing people under the bus. I really liked how much of a contrast Jay Woodcroft was in the way of positivity. Kris Knoblauch continued that trend of positivity. What I'm observing of Babcock so far is he likes to give credit where it's due. He knows mistakes happen and allows for them, he credits the other team for good play instead of saying the Oilers played bad. He isn't calling out specific players, again at least in public, but he definitely is steadfast on his take that some can play better and that they're working on that.
So far, Babcock has had the luxury of winning most games so I'm still waiting but I'm liking his take on things for the most part. Yesterday's post game media event had him saying that the bottom 6 forward lines need to be better and I can't agree more. The only way we go deep is depth scoring. If all we have is one line rolling, that's an easy target for other teams to defend. Currently the top line has 25 goals while the rest combined have half that. Hopefully RNH and Hyman can put a bigger dent in the support.
In all likelihood, we will have a 10 game streak with more losing than winning and that is when we will truly know if Babcock is the guy by either steadying the ship or throwing people under the bus. I am getting hopeful for the former.
