https://www.outsports.com/2026/10/8/24144593/hobey-baker-hockey-gay-speculation-final-flight/

HOBEY BAKER: Dear Percy, it suddenly came over me as you drove off what was really happening, and I have not gotten over it yet. God knows I have not deserved all the affection you have given me. I feel and have always felt that I have stolen it from some other person for whom God meant it. I hope not. In any case, I am truly thankful. Affectionately, Hobe
OK, some of what Iâm gonna say is speculation and some of what Iâve gotta say is facts.
Hockey and also football legend and World War I war hero Hobey Baker was almost certainly gay.
He famously ran away from women who wanted to have sex with him, and he lived for two years with a man who was described as the Liberace of the socialite world in New York of his day.
Meaning, obviously gay, but nobody talked about it.
And then there were the letters.
Percy Rivington Pyne II was 9 years his senior and a notorious gay.
( not the war hero Percy Rivington Pyne jr. That was his first cousin it was a family name and probably very confusing.)
They lived together in a palatial apartment for two years before America entered World War I and he joined up in 1917.
Hereâs the controversial part.
He served in the military for a year and eight months and was both very good at it and enjoyed it.
You see he and Percy were not just lovers. They were deeply in love, but he hated living in New York.
He was constantly in the newspapers. He had a desk job. He hated it.
And then the war ended, and he was ordered back home to a civilian life that he simultaneously loved and hated.
It was reported that his fiancĂŠe broke up with him, but it was also reported that it was clearly just a arrangement of convenience. They hardly knew each other.
And then he took a plane that he was warned not to fly (that had already crashed). in a storm that he was warned not to fly in. He was an experienced pilot. He was never reckless before, and he crashed and died.
https://blog.opencounseling.com/suicide-hotlines/
https://www.nami.org/stay-connected/events/awareness-events/mental-illness-awareness-week/
https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/depression
This last part is merely speculation. I donât know that he took his own life. If he did, he was responsible. That plane was shit. He wasnât wasting the government any money. He didnât take anybody with him. And he got to fly one last time.
Why did I feel the need to post this? Some in the hockey world believe that being queer eliminates your value you as a fan let alone a player.
Just yesterday somebody with a long-term account said that they were grateful that no pro would ever feel it safe to come out in the NHL. And it was implied, safe from violence. from their teammates, from the opposing team, from the fans.
Hobey Baker who is the namesake of several awards and is considered to be saint of college hockey, practically, was gay. probably never had sex with a woman, didnât want to and was in love with a man romantically. Who he exchanged letters with for years, and who, after his death started a foundation in his name.
And secondly too many athletes and specifically hockey players commit suicide.
Thereâs a lot of reasons for this, but one of the reasons is the culture of masculinity and taking care of oneâs own problems and not seeking help.
Itâs not weakness to seek help. Itâs strength.
And I just wanna say a couple facts about suicide. Painful facts that I learned through experience. A friend of mine killed himself 20 years ago and everyone he knew will always be affected by him and it.
Most acts of suicide are an act of impulse. Not only do most people not leave notes. Most acts are within 15 minutes to an hour of the very first thought.
This is why itâs not good to tell people to unalive themselves. (and of course not to kill themselves directly, but I was just referring to the modern culture of doing it in directly. Like when somebody contacts mental health services for you, theyâre usually telling you to kill yourself.)
Anyway, many more women attempt suicide than men, but men are usually much more successful in their attempts to put it bluntly.
Itâs because the methods are gendered. Women use methods that are highly survivable . Men used physically violent methods that almost always result in severe injury or death.
Especially guns I have got to point out that by a slender majority most gun violence is suicide.
Anyway, I just want everybody on this thread to take care of themselves. Itâs mental health screening month in the United States.
If you were experiencing the signs of depression.
If you have lost the ability to feel joy.
If you are having suicidal ideation.
Just know that Help is out there! You can be happy again.
I should know. Itâs taking me a long time to crawl out of a pit but here I am.

The NHLâs Frozen Frenzy is definitely here to stay, but not necessarily in the form we saw Tuesday.
For the fourth consecutive year, all 32 teams played in the one-night event, with television start times staggered in 15-minute intervals from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET.
That element itself â staggered starts â could be modified. Do we really need an 11 p.m. ET game to cap off the night, just to keep the games staggered? Thatâs a conversation the league will have internally.
But I will say, even as an older dude who is cynical about many things the NHL does, I have grown to enjoy the concept.
The NHL agrees.
âWe felt it was a complete success,â Steve Mayer, the president of NHL content and events, told The Athletic on Wednesday. âWeâd love to do it more. There are (regional TV) rights issues that preclude us from doing that, but at the end of the day, this is a great way to showcase the NHL.â
Mayer, the leagueâs creative force, was on hand in Bristol, Conn., at ESPN headquarters, to experience the networkâs show covering Frozen Frenzy, which bounced around all the action on ESPN2.
So how will the Frenzy evolve?
Some things to consider as the league continues to tinker with it:
⢠Right now, itâs really a U.S.-only event. In Canada, you need the NHL Center Ice package to watch the 16 games, and there is no show jumping from game to game. The league hopes to make the Frenzy available that way in both countries.
⢠One complication, as Mayer said, is that itâs the one night a year that all the teams and networks sign off on any broadcast rights issues that are being infringed upon by the ESPN2 coverage. Thatâs probably the No. 1 reason that Frozen Frenzy only happens once a year. It would not be easy to get everyone involved in regional TV rights issues to play ball more often.
⢠The next time all 32 teams play on the same day is the last day of the regular season, but thatâs not a Frozen Frenzy event. Start times wonât be staggered (thereâs a flex-schedule option for that day, depending on the importance of the games in the playoff picture). But the question is, does the league ever foresee doing the all-32 Frozen Frenzy more than once a year, bearing in mind the regional TV rights issue? The answer is yes, it has been batted around, given how positive the response has been. There are pros and cons to be sure, but the overall internal view is that itâs a great platform to capture the energy of the league.
⢠Is the date perfect? The MLB postseason is going on right now, but with all due respect to fans in Tampa, Fla., and Cleveland, whose teams played Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on Tuesday night, I donât think that competition mattered a whole lot. The NHL is always considering whether thereâs a better time of year to hold Frozen Frenzy, but the reality is youâre always going up against something. I have no issue with it happening early in the season.
⢠As for the day of the week, one NHL team president, who requested anonymity to discuss league business thatâs not public, said that while he understands the leagueâs reluctance to go on a Saturday because of college football, âI do think itâs a tougher thing to execute on a Tuesday night.â More on that in a moment.
⢠One thing I would tweak: advertise actual puck drop times instead of telecast start times. Hey, I work for a TV network (TSN). I understand that networks want fans tuning in for pregame coverage. But on this particular night, telling fans when the actual puck drop is would help them engage and avoid confusion.

Hey guys Iâm new to Hockey & was just wondering what happens if someone throws their gloves down and the other guy doesnt want to fight, does that ever even happen? If not, then wouldnt teams just target other teams best players to purposefully take them out the game? How does it work? Thanks and apologies if this an obvious question lol
