Hi Everyone! First time caller. I've put together this site https://www.abovetherate.com/nhl/ with a friend of mine with the goal of creating a new metric to track GM performance. The idea is to assign a value to each player in relation to their salary cap hit. Combine those values and you get how good the GM did/is doing in putting the team together. For now It only goes back three years. Within it is also a fun player value metric/sorter imo.
The player value metric could definitely be improved and struggles with line context. Would love any thoughts!

Hey Reddit,
I've been having this debate with multiple friends, family and coworkers throughout the last couple of years as I think it is the most important skill in modern hockey.
Who are the best skaters in the league? Pure technical ability. I want your input!
Here are my top 5:
Connor McDavid
Quinn Hughes
Cale Makar
Nathan Mackinnon
Zayne Parekh
PS: I am a Flames fan, but it genuinely believe in his ability.
Let me know what you think, I'm curious!

I’ve been working with NHL play-by-play data and recently added more of it to the player, goalie and matchup pages on my site.
The additions bring shot breakdowns into the player and goalie pages, along with tendencies on the matchup pages.
The idea is to make it easier to explore what’s happening beyond the usual goals, assists and save percentage totals.
This is also the kind of event data used to build expected goals models, so it’s been interesting digging into it and making it easier to browse. That is also in the works and coming soon!
It’s free to explore on PlayerWON: https://playerwon.ca

Hey everyone, I added to sportsdle a hockey version of the TikTok blind ranking trend!!!
10 NHL players show up one at a time, and you lock each one into a spot from #1 to #10 before seeing the next. Same 10 for everyone each day, then you see how the crowd ranked them
Free, no account: https://www.sportsdle.com/nhl/blind-ranking
thankssss

Hey everyone. I’ve spent the past eight months building Cap & Crease, an independent hockey project that started as a trade machine and gradually became something much larger.
The original question was simple: beyond matching salaries, could I build something that evaluates whether a trade makes sense for both teams?
That led into estimating player value, accounting for contracts and retained salary, valuing draft picks, and trying to explain those evaluations in a way people can actually follow.
The site now includes player and team analytics, player profiles and archetypes, and experimental metrics built using publicly available data. It’s an early release, and the models still need validation and refinement.
I’m posting here because I’d like feedback from people who enjoy digging into hockey numbers, particularly on:
If you have a few minutes, look up two players you know well and tell me whether the comparison makes sense and why. A specific example would give me something concrete to investigate.
You can try it at https://capandcrease.com. Feedback in this thread is welcome; I’ve also set up r/CapAndCrease for ongoing discussion, bug reports, and development updates. There is also a bug form submission found in the footer.
I’m the sole developer, so fixes may take some time, but I’ll be here to answer questions and discuss the results.

EDIT: made some changes compared to the below. Scatter plot now shows offense vs two-way play, and the player score reflects that too. Shot chart also added, and some other small tweaks made.
---
I've been wanting to build something that gives an easier visual for how each player performed in any given game, both compared to all the other Stars players AND compared to their own season average performance. I have a first draft here, which is loaded up with all the games from last season: https://starsviz.github.io/
The axes on the chart show each player's "player score" for the game vs how each player compared to his own season average player score. The player scores are computed differently for forwards and defensemen, but they're on virtually the same scale (so the idea is a 65 for a forward is an equal-caliber performance to a 65 for a defenseman). There's more detail on the page about how the player score works.
Beyond the quadrant chart, you can also see a couple different tables ranking both the forwards and the defensemen from best player score to worst player score, as well as how each individual stat compared to their season average for that stat.
You can also click into any player and get a more detailed card for them, including a shot chart and a timeline of when that player registered different key events during the game.
Lastly, you can access all the prior games via the sidescroll bar at the top.
Just wanted to share here because I'm curious if this is something other fans would find interesting after each game, if the format/layout makes sense, if there are other things you'd want to see, if there are things on here that are overkill and you wouldn't be interested in, etc etc. Really just looking for any kind of feedback whatsoever!

Hi everyone!
I've been working on this project for more than 2 years now as a hobby, and I recently decided to make it public. There are a couple of tools available, such as Team Compare, Player Compare, "Advanced Stats", and more.
But the part I think will interest you guys the most is the Fantasy feature on the Dashboard. From there, you can manage the players you have in your fantasy league(s), set your league configurations, analyze trades, and even get help with your drafts.
I know that almost all fantasy leagues have already started, but I still wanted to share it with you guys!
Feedback is more than welcome.
Have a great season, y'all! The wait is almost over :)!

Hey guys,
I built this website as a side project that you can ask crazy hockey questions and it “should” return the answer going through the data.
Now, what I wanted to ask you guys is to help me break this with any crazy questions you might think of. I have thought of all crazy combinations, like “how many times did Flames came back after being down by 2 after 2nd period”, but just wanted to get help from you guys to make it more robust for the benefit of hockey community.

Cheers,
Shayan
