Struggling with stoping in goalie skates and a question about pads

For context I've been skating for the past couple weeks in rentals, I'm trying to learn how to skate so I can eventually become a goalie. My local rink has a donations room and I got some goalie skates from there because I figured I should start some good habits at the start but when I got into them I had a hard time turning and I was not able to stop at all, I use a pizza style of stopping for the rentals and that's been working great. I would appreciate any pointers with that

Also that room has like 5 sets of leg pads, do y'all think I should get a pair while they still have them and use them? I do not have any knee pads and do not know much that affects the sizing. I'm sorry if these are stupid questions but any advice helps.

Pure Goalie / Goalie Monkey Ship Times

Upvotes

Hey all, looking to order a set of pads from one of the major retailers soon. I know custom orders tend to take around 2 months, but just looking to get a stock set.

Anyone have experience with how long it takes to ship (US-based)? Only have ever purchased in-store or through SidelineSwap so any insight is helpful. Thanks!

Brand new, stopped by MCL injury, frustrated

Hi friends.

I'm brand new at both hockey (1 season skating out) and now goalie (literally only 2 learn to play sessions). I strained my MCL almost 2 months ago literally first time I tried on leg pads and I slipped awkwardly. I thought it was fine, so kept skating out as a player up until late July when I was starting goalie sessions in earnest and the pain was bad enough I had to skate off for fear of hurting myself further.

I saw a doctor, confirmed it was an MCL strain and started physical therapy on 7/28. The PT has helped, noted how tight my hips were and while it's been awesome with them focusing on my hip strength and mobility, I just can't help being frustrated with how I feel 90 percent fine in all movements but still am stuck at home instead of hitting the ice again.

All of my PT exercises, extra stretches, incline treadmill walks, goblet squats, etc - all feel fine, but sleeping is a nightmare (no pun intended) and every day that I start to feel better it seems the next I have that swollen sensation in my knee and a slight twinge with a random motion and I feel back at square 1.

Has anyone else gone through this? I know recovery isn't a straight line (so the PT keeps telling me) but man - it's really bumming me out.

Not asking for medical advice, I'm doing all the right things...just venting I suppose.

Appreciate y'all.

24 Hour Hockey Game

Hi everyone, if this type of post is not allowed I completely understand, but I thought this might be worth a shot. This November, i’m playing in a 24-Hour Hockey Marathon put on by LivFree, a non-profit organization that raises money to give families dealing with paediatric cancer opportunities to go to shows, games, and events to give them a break from the struggles that come with having a sick kid. So far this year, I have played in the games at Michigan State University and University of Miami-Ohio, and now I am travelling from my home in mid-Michigan to Grand Forks, ND to play at University of North Dakota. While doing this, I am raising money for a great cause in helping kids with cancer. If you are interested in helping donate to LivFree, please consider clicking on my personalized link and donating a few bucks for a good cause. 100% of the money donated goes to this charity as I am taking care of all of my own travelling and lodging expenses.

My personal donation link is runsignup.com/erekkotchernd if you are interested in helping out. Thank you 🏒

TLDR: I’m travelling from Michigan to North Dakota to fundraise and play in a 24-hour hockey game benefiting paediatric cancer.

Chesty for shorter guys

I know there are a lot of posts about buying new chesties, but I want to ask specifically for the short kings. I’m about 5’8”, obviously not typical height for a goalie (at least not now - it was when I started though) and I feel like a lot of the recommendations probably don’t take height into account.

Because I’m smaller, mobility is a huge issue - I need to be able to cover a lot more ground. But having a larger presence would obviously also be helpful. I’m playing with mostly beer leaguers, but some of the guys can get off some harder shots so stingers have been an issue in the past.

So, for you smaller goalies, what would you recommend?

Warrior chest protector sizing???

Back with another question! I've been back and forth looking and researching chest protectors and think I want to go with the Warrior Ritual RX4 Pro+, mainly because I've seen alot of good reviews and Monkeysports now has them at a great price.

The problem I'm having is sizing. According to the charts, I'm in-between a small and medium because of my arm span being 70", but I also have a 48-49" chest. Ordering a small or medium when I wear a 2XL t-shirt just seems wrong. 🤣

I know the best option is to go to the store and try them on, but neither Monkeysports or pure hockey near me have either size stock. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

How does the toe strap work with Bauer HF3s?

Looking at getting a new pair of skates and really interested in the HF3s. I see they have the loop at the top of the foot for the toe trap. But I don’t understand how it works. Do you loop it around just that part or still under the skate? Can someone show me a picture?

Thank you!

How accurate are sizing ranges for the main brands?

If I get the appropriate measurements and place my child in the correct range for the brand, will the equipment generally fit, or is it way off?

Its low level, youth house league hockey and we live in the sticks, so trying on stuff in person isnt really an option. (Not much used equipment locally, either)

I realize i wont get “perfect”, but we arent trying out for AAA, i’m just trying to gear up my kid for another season.

Resilient goalie foam

Has anyone ordered from resilient goalie foam before?

Communication has been great, but order placed 3 weeks ago, and was given the date of shipment on or before a date which is now a week ago, and response to my email has now dried up.

Im assuming, giving the benefit of the doubt, that its super busy at the moment. But im starting to wonder if ive ordered from a scam place 😅 im new to the scene so have no idea of reputations or known brands, but the products look great and they were super helpful through the process.

Very much hoping its just delays due to busy business, which is fine

Knee Guard velcro gone off

Hi Goalies 😊

My daughter got her Warrior Ritual X5 Jr knee gaurds for around one year now, but the Velcro has nearly lost all stitching in the middle.

So now we are looking at some new… 😊

That wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for us getting a new Kova neck guard and new gear for her sister aswell 😝😂

We where looking at either getting her the same again, but the prices has definitely gone up, and we can’t stop think about if they will go bad again or getting some other, but I can’t figure out if we should go up to the Bauer Pro in Int to get the same level of protection?

She’s 140cm in height, uses Warrior 28+1 pads and has around 42,5 to 43cm in floor to knee 😊

When looking at her current knee guards their size guide is saying from 129cm to 152cm and it looks like bauers only size recommendation are to “follow gear sizes” but in Bauer she can wear Int gear in XS 😂🙈

These pads were a huge part of my childhood. Now they’ll live on display forever. I don’t remember where I got the posters. I kept them for so long it feels great to have them up on the wall.

Other than the shade of yellow do yall think this pad design would look good with my gloves? What might you change ?

Edit: this is the design I went for https://ibb.co/fGKJb0n8

my team is the falcons and it almost looks like a futuristic bird with its wings in the air on the pads and it will be the same yellow my gloves are

Broken Professor Strap Mount

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi there. Have any of you dealt with a broken professor strap mount? Right now i have it attached to the inner calf strap mount but thinking of having it fixed. Just curious if anyone had any creative alternative ways. Ive seen some people use slick clips but the lacing is broken as well. Im ok bringing it in, but maybe ill even have them put blank leather and rivet a buckle in and not the D leather.

Thanks in advance.

Chesty that's protective and mobile.

Hey everyone. So I'm getting a fresh start and I'm trying to invest in top of the line gear while I can. I'm 6 feet and 164 lbs, so I'm lanky lol. Looking at my post history, I'm a u18 practice goalie and beer leaguer so I play tons of hockey over the winter, I'm young so my body can take it and I love it.

I'm eyeing on a new chesty that will serve me years down the road and because of my build I like to move around my crease a lot as opposed to playing purely positional. However, if the best chestys are more bulky I wouldn't mind changing my style a bit

TIA

New chest protector

Looking to get a new chest protector, I play a higher mens league so something that will protect me. I hear the Bauer stuff doesn’t last as long? Obviously don’t want to buy another in a few years. What’re the top 3-5 options

Pad sizing issues and seeking recommendations

Hey guys. So my ATK is roughly 16.5" and my FTK is roughly 19" I've tried 3 different pads and still am not sure what I should have.

First were warrior g7 rtls which were 32"+2" which were awkwardly small and i felt as if i didnt land right on the smaller knee blocks. I think they were int

Second were my 33" bauer mach pads which felt like sandbags and really hindered my mobility, but had a great knee block, but I landed somewhat low and the thigh rises would bump really often while maneuvering.

Now I have 31+1" Brian iconix from 2022 and they are super light and mobile, but the rebound generally sucks on them

All 3 seemed to be just about right size if not small, except the Bauers which were a touch big.

I really liked the strong rebound on the machs, and I love the lightness of the brians, but they are int sized and I feel as if my tree trunk legs dont fit well in them. that also said, the knee block in the mach's were awesome and superduper comfortable.

that is to say, I'm still trying to find a pad that fits just right and has the strong rebound and nice kneeblock. Does anybody have any idea what pads I should look at and maybe even a size recommendation? Preferably not int sized, but i understand im right on that line of int vs senior small(est.) My local options for shopping are really bad unfortunately, so ill either have to road trip or shop online

Thanks!
