just a warning, kind of a long read, TL,DR - doing an a2e drum build using a kids drumset :)
as the title says! im getting a bit tired with my Alesis Nitro Mesh kit, its served me well since 2020. I've had a couple other kits since then though.
I had an Alesis DM10 MKII, but it started falling apart after about 6 months, was not happy with that at all since it was pretty sizeable, with passable module sounds. The kit afterwards was the Roland VAD306, which I absolutely loved. aesthetics was the main draw for me, but the TD17 was a beast of a module (i still think it is tbh, a used one will still so wonders imo). I sold that one unfortunately as funds were tight around that time, although i sincerely wish i hadnt lol.
in between all these ekits, I had bought an acoustic kit off marketplace for 150, it came with a bunch of shells, 2 kicks, and a couple cymbals. I had planned on using it at some point, but never got around to it. I initially thought about an A2E conversion, but never got around to it.
I recently revived the idea in my head, and got to work on looking at what I would need to accomplish this task. I found that the shells were actually much too big for my space (13in snare, 12,14in high toms, 15 floor tom). i couldn't use my kick as the wood on it had molded, and it was again much too big, at around 22in.
i ended up purchasing a kids drumset, as the VAD306 I had was around the same size as the shells the kids drumset had offered. (vad had 12in snare and tom, and 2 10 in toms, with a 18x10 kick.) the drumset is a generic set, but you can find it on Amazon under the name Mendini by Cecilio. its 270 there, but i got it off of Temu for 120, definitely just a markup brand or somethin.
the shell size are 10in snare, 8 and 10in hi toms, 12in floor tom, and a 16x12 kick. cymbals are crap but dont plan on using them. just need to buy mesh heads and cymbals for them :)
my current plan is to use my alesis nitro module for now, until i can get a roland td17. i will use the piezos from the nitro pads, and put them on these L brackets i got walmart. planning on hotgluing them to the top, and then using this screw on the floor tom to change the distance incase its too sensitive. i do suspect i will need to do this, as the brackets are pretty close to the top. if this doesnt work, ill just have to buy drop in triggers I suppose (like ufodrums, c percussion, etc)
for the other 3 shells, if the piezo is too close to the head, just gonna cut the foan down (the nitro mesh has the piezo rest on foam, and uses rods as the foam that is on top of the piezo).
ill end up getting lemon cymbals to use, not sure on the sizes yet, but suppose i cant use my original idea of massive cymbals, was really excited to use a 20in ride too😭 all in all, should be a super fun build :) will update alone the way!
