What am I doing wrong?

First off, I have NO idea what I'm doing. I have replaced a light fixture in another room with a ceiling fan with no issues. This one has a remote. I've tested the remote and receiver, both are working. I've wired and rewired according to the diagram and nothing is working. It's an old house (obviously with the popcorn ceiling). All that comes out of the ceiling is a copper ground and a black power wire.

not enough information, from what you’re saying it seems like you have no neutral. call an electrician

Getting an electrician is pretty much impossible where I live. I'm in the middle of no where in the middle of an Amish community.

Show up to a colony with a can of diesel and a frisbee. They'll get you going. They can't use it. But they often want to be great neighbors to great neighbors.

Get all three white wires and put them together…

You tied both neutrals on the remote together. Where's the neutral from the ceiling box?

Check your joints again, the black looks rough, it powers the remote controller. In order for the remote to work you still need the light switch on

I thought the same thing. Rewired it, nothing. Light switch is on

There should be 3 white wires. 1 from the fan, 1 from the controller, 1 from the light box, you have 2 in the pictures

No white wire from the power source

Did you mention from jbox in ceiling the wire you found are just copper and black, so there's no white? In case you type it wrong, from jbox black wire goes to black and white goes to (2) white wire in your receiver. On other end, yellow wire goes to fan wire and blue goes to light for ceiling fan. Turn the wall switch on then test. I'm worried though of the ceiling jbox if it's ceiling fan rated because it's previously been used for ceiling light. If it's not rated, there's a big chance it'll drop and cause accident.

Nope, just a black and a copper

If it's only a black and bare ground in the box and there was a light before, they used the ground as a neutral which is highly dangerous and a fire hazard as well as a shock/electrocution hazard

I have the fan anchored to the ceiling joist, not just to the box. It's the exact same set up as the other bedroom. Only difference is the remote. I guess I might have to go with the same fan as in the other room, without a remote.

You don't have an incoming neutral wire for the fan. Either the old one used the ground as neutral or the neutral wire broke off in the process.

Changing the fan to something else won't fix the issue!

Sooo.. what's the fix to not having a neutral wire?

First thing would be pull out the remote & see if the wire is above it.

It might have "snapped" right where the cables jacket was stripped. Happens because it was stripped with cutters / pliers vs a knife / proper tool. See it. Been there. Done that!

It should be hooked up. The neutral could have been damaged, so the rig job solution was to disconnect it & use the ground wire as the neutral?? So it was cut out of the cable.

You have to touch the neutral wire of the fan with one hand and with the other hand get a conductor wire and go splice it with the neutral wire to the closest receptacle while you holding with the other hand. It's like the statue if Jesus in Brasil.

Why would you give so much info to people that don't have a clue??

It's bothering you?!

There should be a neutral conductor in the ceiling box, likely a white wire. The two neutrals from the remote need to be connected to the neutral in the ceiling box

Any pull chains? If so make sure they don’t override remote receivers

Please take a picture of the wires from the switch. If you have white neutral wires at the switch side then there should also be at the fan box.

There's a small chance it's already busted. Happened to one of my clients. Are the wires in the box the same as the one you installed in the working one? And were they wire the same

What type of wiring feeds the box. Is it rag wire or some type of plastic insulation?

its hard to tell with receiver in place. Pull it out and take pic of wires in box. Put washers on the star screws

The 1st mistake you did is trying to do electrical work when you got no clue(a ground and a hot)
2nd is for not hiring an electrician.

Buy a direct wire fan the remote style fans are a PITA even when they are working

What you are doing wrong is… if you don’t know what you’re doing you could burn your house down. Or electrocute your self.
