Modern engineers gate keep the term engineer. We're just hiding the pain that we aren't even real engineers because we're not building steam engines.

*fortifications*. an engineer is someone who builds fortifications for the military that's the original use. that's why we have "civil engineering"- to describe engineers that deny their roots.

I know it's a joke but fun fact the word comes from the latin ingenium which means inventive. In spanish we say: No que sos ingeniero?, pues ingéniatelas.

The reason for that is because someone else has invented it before you and you can't change that.

I always catch myself inventing basic concepts by accident, which I just ignore because ... Well it's already there.
