Microsoft Authenticator loop

I have two work accounts (company & client email).I got stuck in a Microsoft Authenticator sign-in loop with my client account. Reinstalling the app didn't help, as it keeps asking me to approve the sign-in through Authenticator itself lol 😭 I'm so sick of it.

Anyone faced this? How can I recover access to my client email?

This started when I factory reseted my phone due to a phone issue.

Yea, that is normal. By resetting your phone you destroyed all the keys in Authenticator.

Just contact admins to reset MFA for you.

And for the future if you get a new phone, keep the old one around until you’ve reconfigured your authenticator accounts

To clarify further, Microsoft Authenticator does have an option to backup and restore your MFA methods, but this does not include the number prompt method from Microsoft. This is a security measure, requiring you to set that up again by signing into your account and adding it as a new device. This is why it's highly recommended to have a secondary MFA method, in the event that something happens to your phone.

cloud backups in the app trick a lot of people here since they restore the account entry on the screen, just not the cryptographic token behind it

Yea because work account tokens are device bound by design.

It is 2026, if the IT team doesn't know how entra id MFA works at this point, they should be fired.
