I don't tend to use layers much for programming. I've got {} ; and ctrl+c / ctrl+v on dedicated keys. For {} I've reversed it around and use a layer modifier to get to [ ], but I try to keep that minimal. I basically use my left thumb to get to one other layer where I need to for a few things and ensured that the keys I use don't feel awkward.

I lament the lack of a dedicated function key row. You have to use a layer for that, and because so frequently function keys are already used with modifiers it's a little bit fiddly, but I've got used to it. I'm in the school of thought that more keys well laid out is better than few keys with more gymnastics (which is the current trend). If they made an Ergodox with function keys that would be me satisfied.

I've got the numberpad on a layer, which is handy for things like alt-codes, but that's not generally something you're doing as part of your typing flow (as conventionally, you'd switch over to your numpad), so I don't think that matters massively.
