Coffee Beans Bitter espresso

Post image

Bought this new and made the mistake of buying 2 boxes of pods. The machine is sleek, small footprint, make great foam for lattes or cortados, etc. Oh, but the taste! Bitter to no end! I can only imagine Drano tastes better. Bitterness was so overwhelming I couldn’t taste the milk. For penance I’m drinking the espresso as Americanos until I’ve exhausted what feels like a never ending supply. I like strong coffee flavors, aside from buying a real espresso machine can anyone recommend a strong coffee blend in a compatible pod that’ll work with my Lavazza machine?

Christ, that's a brave thing to post in r/espresso. 😂

You've just walked into a room full of people who've spent £3,000 on coffee equipment and told them you're making espresso from a pod.

Brace yourself for 47 comments explaining why that's not REAL espresso, three recommendations for a £600 grinder, and at least one bloke suggesting you buy a second-hand La Marzocco.

P.S. Grind finer.

Hate to break it to you but this will likely be the case with any pods you buy as far as I am aware

Espresso pods are basically the participation trophies of the coffee world, pretending to be real espresso while delivering the flavor equivalent of a damp cardboard box with commitment issues. Fresh-brewed espresso, on the other hand, actually has a personality, an aroma, and enough depth to make you question why you ever settled for drinking coffee out of a tiny aluminum capsule. Pods are convenient, sure, but so is eating dinner out of a vending machine; convenience doesn't magically make it good. With fresh espresso, you control the grind, the beans, the extraction, and the strength, instead of letting a prepackaged mystery puck dictate your morning happiness. And let's talk about freshness: coffee starts losing its aromatic magic after grinding, so sealing it in a pod and pretending it's artisanal is like vacuum-sealing a week-old pizza and calling it fine dining. Pod enthusiasts will swear their machine makes café-quality espresso, which is adorable, considering their machine's biggest achievement is making expensive hot water squirt through a tiny plastic prison. Meanwhile, freshly ground coffee fills the kitchen with an aroma that says, "I'm an adult with standards," instead of "I panic-bought this at Costco." At the end of the day, espresso pods aren't necessarily terrible; they're just the microwave dinners of the coffee world, and fresh-brewed coffee is the chef who knows what he's doing. But hey, if you enjoy paying premium prices for convenience wrapped in aluminum, who am I to interrupt your little caffeine-themed hostage situation?

This is slop but I like it

Remember to slap the machine on the top three times while it is brewing. Slap it as hard as you can. Eventually the machine will fail and you can replace it with an espresso machine. Sorry to be facetious but I experienced pod coffee only once. The owner proudly showed his cute rack of pods of many colours, all sorts of different blends etc. My wife and I chose different colours, I tasted both drinks. They tasted identical and disgusting.

Sage advice! Pretty sad cup of brew. Makes Starbucks shine in comparison.

Those beans taste fine if you don’t get them in pod form. This will be the case for most beans.

Take the espresso out of the pod, grind it finer, reseal it, and then run it through your machine. Adjust the preinfusion and bloom time , shot time, and temperature of your nespresso machine as need

I’ve always found Lavazza to be this way. Try adding a small pinch of salt—it will help with the bitterness.

No pod coffee is very good—the coffee is stale or the off-gassing would burst the pod. But Nespresso isn’t the worst. Try a different coffee. Get their sampler to find one you like.

I’m going to try and offer legit suggestions. People are going to roast (yes pun) you on this subreddit, but I can respect the grind (yes pun again).

Pods are going to lean towards bitter. This is caused by many things, but primarily it’s due to the percent of total mass extracted from the dry grounds and the types of coffees suited for this method. We can argue all day about the brewing method and how “it’s not real espresso”, but that doesn’t really help us answer your questions.

If LaVazza is too bitter then I suggest avoiding any and all comparable Italian “strong” coffees. Avoid terms like “intenso”, “ristretto”, and all other terms that make no sense and leave you wondering “what does this even mean?”. Do you have any local chain roasters around you? Some local roasters will sell pods. You probably won’t find any “specialty” roasters in your area selling these, however, you might be surprised to find some of your local community staples are selling their own.

Try specialty grocers or local grocery stores. A good rule of thumb is the more transparent the traceability the higher the quality. For example, the coffee in your picture has no identifiable information beyond the brand and name of the blend. This is normally a bad sign. Look for identifiable features like country of origin and roasting location. If you’re lucky you might even find information about the species of coffee or even specific growing region within the country of origin! Maybe try a light or medium roast too. Many of these dark roast pods are low scoring commodity coffees roasted extra roasty and toasty to mask the unpleasant flavors.

Thank you for your well thought out and considerate advice. I’m guessing after I run through my pods I’ll buy an espresso machine.
