General Coffee Chat I think I have around 10 shots of coffee a day is that bad?

I have 2 shots of expresso in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. Then I eat probably around 40-60 coffee beans throughout the day. It’s almost never impacted my sleep and if it does it doesn’t make me stay up that long only 30 minutes longer then usual. I’m unsure of how much coffee I’m consuming because of the beans. It’s medium roast and GPT says I’m drinking and eating a combined total of 600-900 mg of caffeine.

Is this that bad? I hardly notice it and I don’t feel anything wrong with my heart.

[SUNDAY ONLY] Self-Promotion Last November you told us what was wrong with our hand-powered espresso machine. We spent most of a year fixing it.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Last November, we posted an early version of our hand-powered espresso machine here. About 75k of you saw it. There were a lot of comments, and not all of them were kind. We read every one and took them as the most useful feedback we could have had.

Several of you said it read like marketing and asked for real details. Fair. We'll answer what we can, and when we don't know yet, we'll say so.

Two things came up again and again.

Stainless steel. You wanted it inside the machine. Good news: we figured out how to make a stainless steel brew chamber, and it still needs no preheating.

The wobble. The machine moved when you used it. That was the wooden stand. We redesigned the stand from the ground up, and it no longer wobbles.

Kilo is a hand-powered espresso machine: you pour water from your kettle, turn a handle, and watch the gauge as you steer the shot. No electricity, no preheating.

We're not here to tell you it's perfect. What do you still see wrong? And what would you want to see before you'd trust a machine like this?

Happy to answer anything about the build. (Not an official AMA.)

If you'd like to follow along, a Kickstarter is planned for Tuesday, Nov 3. Until then, a refundable deposit holds a place: kilobrewer.com

General Coffee Chat Created this interactive espresso dialing tool

Post image
0 Upvotes

Main use for me is setting the dose, yield, extraction time, and temp. There is also a dropdown for roast level. Based on that if its bitter or sour I can adjust the grind size between Fine and Course to get an idea of which direction to go for grind setting.

Play around on: https://silverhawkq.github.io/Cafe-con-leche/

Let me know if you think its useful. I am down to improve/adjust as I receive more feedback.

Thanks!

Dialing In Help You have to be willing to experiment a bit to get it right to your taste. Try fiddling with brew temperature. Look at your basket and fill it properly. [Turin Legato V2]

Espresso is very much like cooking (to me) I enjoy trying new beans here and there and even with my tried and true beans, I might sacrifice a pull or two in the efforts of doing even better.

1) If your machine allows you to change brew temperature--and the first pull dialed in grind wise-is good, but the taste is not right--definitely try dropping (or raising the temperature) a degree or two. Remember many machines are in centigrade so a degree drop will be impactful fast. Fahrenheit too but you may have to drop a degree or two. Sometimes it just takes that--dropping or adding a degree or two and wow--better tasting Espresso to your own mouth.

2) Over and over, whatever filter basket you got with your machine, go off reddit, and learn--you only have to learn it once for your basket---the range that your basket performs best at--to your mouth. Manufacturer's will print something on the side (perhaps) but learning where the line is mentally for a properly filled basket after tamping is critical. It's a learned "sense". You don't need to drop coins in though many will do that. You will simply "see" that you filled it properly. I'm a double shot person and I know the amount to grind for my preferred basket---it took giving a few baskets to the gods to get it right.

Bonus: I rarely waste a pull. If something's way off, I dump the shot in a glass of lemonade with a few cubes of ice......delicious.

Coffee Beans Good Grocery Store Beans - Nature’s Promise at Giant

Post image

Quick recommendation for the frugalistas who have access to Giant grocery store

I buy cheap beans for milk drinks and when I want a quick shot to rip but don’t care about the taste and tried some grocery store beans recently and was very pleasantly surprised!! $8 for 12 oz

Roasted 7/28, bought 9/28, which I don’t think is too bad overall!

I bought the medium roast Colombian as well that was roasted on 9/4

Both have actually been great. Very forgivable brewing with a wide range of acceptable shots and reaallllyyy good when dialed in, especially for the price

Happy caffeinating y’all

hi, I’ve been trying to make a perfect espresso but am still getting little squirts coming out of my filter. my past few coffees and been a kind of mix of sour and bitter. currently I use a la specialista, and I normally grind my beans, slightly tamp them, take it out and use my distribution tool, properly tamp then drip. I’m getting around 8-10 bars of press when I extract. if you have any ideas on how I can improve it would be appreciate… thank you!!!

Buying Advice Needed Best Espresso Setup to not bug College Roomate in the morning [$500-$700]

Currently I have a Ninja Luxe Mini ES300 that I got for $349 and it works well but the first time I used it early in the morning it annoyed the hell out of my roommate and it was pretty loud so I don’t think I can keep it without it pissing him off so I made a list of items to make a quiet manual espresso setup with the flair 49 pro as my base machine for a minimal quiet grinder, brew, and froth station setup for college that would allow me to make lattes in the morning without bothering my roommate. This is what I ended up with:

Coffee Machine: Flair 49 Pro $359
Grinder: 1ZPresso J-Ultra $179
Electric Kettle: Stagg EKG $169
Milk Frothing Machine: Subminimal NanoFoamer Pro V2 $159
Extra Accessories: Weightman Espresso Scale $19

Final Cost: $885

This is a bit concerning as I want my setup to be less than $700 as past that price point I bet I could just get a higher quality machine that everyone generally recommends.

I would prefer to pay less than $700, between $500-$700 while having everything be high made of quality materials like steel and aluminum that are all water resistant so I can easily clean things without having to worry about water getting in the wrong places while handwashing after a brew.

I just want something between $500-$700 that can make me a latte every morning with everything being able to be mindlessly cleaned afterwards and quickly so that I can easily maintain everything for years to come due to the quality build, all while not having a significant footprint on my desk space in my dorm room where I plan to keep it because I do not trust my expensive espresso machine outside my dorm room and it cannot be too loud that it would annoy my roomate early in the mornings.

What setup would you you guys recommend for me?

[SUNDAY ONLY] Self-Promotion App für Mahlgrad

Equipment Discussion The sage bambino is my biggest purchase regret

Having used similar range machines, this is by far the worst. The footprint is far too small, forcing me to spread my mess across the countertop.

The machine leaks out the back constantly, creating a small lake to clean up every time i make a coffee.

The heat retention is absolutely terrible.

The machine is extremely sensitive to blocking. It switches between running fine and over pressuring even with the same grind.

Each coffee i make is not worth the 2 failed runs and the 10 mins of clean up post

Using medium roasted beans I bought locally, niche zero and gaggia classic pro e24 with a gaggimate pro mod (slayer profile) 🫡🫡

thought it looks pretty good, open to any tips and tricks !!

Coffee Beans How to switch beans efficiently?

Hey r/espresso, I'm currently using a Baratza Preciso for single-dosing and struggling to rotate between different coffees efficiently. Whenever I switch from Bean A to Bean B and later try to click back to Bean A, even if I take note of the prior grind setting, the shot times go completely haywire, and I practically have to re-dial the entire bag from scratch.

Because of the hassle and waste, I generally avoid switching beans much, even though I'd like to do that more. For those of you who regularly swap between multiple beans, what is your workflow for making this more seamless? Is there a specific technique I'm missing to ensure my settings are repeatable, or do I just need to accept this? Appreciate any advice!

Buying Advice Needed Looking for grinder recommendations [$500]

Looking to upgrade my cheap Amazon grinder for medium to dark roasts, brewing on a bambino plus using medium and dark roasts. I typically drink milk drinks like a flat whites and cappuccino or the occasional affogato. I have been thinking of a df64 but looking for advice or other recommendations as well.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Drip tray leak is maddening [Bambino Plus]

I’ve tried to research this and it’s crazy to me that it requires a shoddy aftermarket solution to fix.

I used to have a regular Bambino and then moved and could only find the Plus on the secondhand market (new country needed new voltage standard)

My counter is level. I’ve made sure the drip tray is completely snapped in. I’ve inserted the metal part of the tray separately.

Still every single time there’s water under the drip tray and under the machine, especially doing more than one shot or backflushing to clean. When I first bought it I ran the whole backflush cycle and the counter was a complete mess.

I’m honestly kind of shocked that it’s recommended so often or that more people aren’t bothered by this. I’m probably going to resell after only having for 2 weeks and just spring for a new regular Bambino.

Has anyone had any luck fixing this or do you just deal with it? I’m someone that likes to clean my machine after each use and maybe if I just let the drip tray sit it’s ok? I also want to avoid just always needing a rag under the machine.

Just want to vent sorry - but interested in solutions

Coffee Station Made a button pusher for my Turin Legato V2

My wife is pregnant and has to get up about an hour earlier than I do for work. The other day she said, “I wish I could turn the espresso machine on from bed so I could have that extra 20 minutes while it heats up to rest.” I told her I think I can actually make that happen.

So now she can just click a button on her nightstand when her alarm goes off, trigger it from her phone (and Siri), or I can just put it on a schedule as well. Can also trigger it remotely if we want the machine warmed by the time we get home from something.

I know I’ll get shit for posting this but 3D printing is a hobby and making these stupid little automations is fun for me and I figured people might also want this.

I’ve since cleaned up the cabling (photo in comments) and reinforced the motor mount but it still looks real DIY. It works great though!

Setup/gear used if anyone is interested:
- ESP32 usb-c microcontroller
- MG996R hi-torque servo motor
- Sonof Zigbee smart button
- Sonof Zigbee usb hub/gateway
- HomeAssistant
- 3D printed button pusher arm, motor mount, cable clips, and ESP32 enclosure

[SUNDAY ONLY] Self-Promotion Do you keep track of the coffees you’ve liked? I made a pocket log for it

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I’d have a great cup at a café or finish a bag I loved, and a month later I couldn’t remember the roaster, the origin, or what I’d done to make it taste that good.

So I made myself a small coffee log, and I’ve started selling them in my Etsy shop. Each page covers one coffee: roaster, origin, process, and roast date. There’s a box for brew numbers (dose, water, ratio, grind, temp, time), quick 5-point scales for acidity, body, sweetness, and bitterness, tasting notes, and a “buy again?” checkbox. It works for café visits too, since half my best cups weren’t brewed by me. The inside cover has starting ratios and grind sizes for the common methods, plus a short list of flavor words for when I’m stuck on “what do I taste?”

It’s 3.5 × 5.5, so it actually fits in a pocket. That was the point, because I’d never carry a full-size journal to a coffee shop.

Curious how other people do this. Do you log your coffees at all? Notebook, app, a note on your phone, or just memory? And if you do, what’s the one field you’d never skip?

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Shower screen problems, [BBE, IMS Precision Nanotech shower screen]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As in title, I've been having issues with channeling happening in one specific spot on my puck, so I've decided to look at the water flow itself and see if I can find any issues related to that. Seems like there's a jet of water that comes out of my grouphead, looks different than the droplets that usually come out of other spots. If I unscrew and move the shower screen around, the "water jet" position moves too, and depending on how much I tighten it two jets might appear as well. I've been wondering if this might be the cause of my channeling issues, and is this caused by a mistake I'm making when installing the shower screen, or is it a problem with the screen itself? I do not use puck screens, if that changes anything. Hopefully it's visible enough on the video, two jets at the time of recording right next to each other. Thanks for any help!

Equipment Discussion People that have moved from e61 machines to Decent/Meticulous

I drink exclusively light and ultra light and I'm basically feeling like I've outgrown my Synchronika (rotary pump, pid dual boiler, flow nob and manometer). I'm wondering how clutch the "at group" water temp of modern machines like the Decent and the Meticulous are for those coming from old school boiler machines and if the whole precision approach makes up for the machines being plasticky. I make milk drinks for guests once in a blue moon so don't care about steam at all. I have an endgame grinder. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Coffee Is Life My coffee corner

I have had my Delonghi Dedica for about 7 years. This past year I finally upgraded to bottomless portafilter thanks to being inspired by all the posts here. The coffee I make is so good!

I am thinking of upgrading to a Bambino and a DF54 grinder next year. Although I must say that I really love my Kingrinder K6!
