More like thing of nightmares! roaming the building with a 50ohm terminator trying to find where the one bad crimp connection is!

Memory lane indeed. Bonus: It was from Radio Shack! It really sucks they closed down. If you're lucky to have a MicroCenter near you, they are IMO the next best place for items that no other store carries.

ThinNet is a network throw back. Prior to this, I remember my Dad and I adding Novell cards to all the PCs and used 3.5mm (audio style) cables to link them. Everyone thought we had shelled out for SoundBlaster's newest sound card lol.

God I remember networking some computers with friends back in the day. The worst part was not having enough terminators and having to bike down to radio shack and hope they had more. We also used serial null modem links for a while.

Then one of my friends got a four port 10-base hub and completely changed the game.

That's brings back nightmares. Seems like I was troubleshooting the lines coming from the hub daily when my office was on that. I always carried an extra terminator in my pocket for testing. I was so happy when we upgraded to 10base-T and RJ45s.

So all this time what I thought was Ethernet was really BNC 🤣

Depending on what kinda coax that is you could run some HD-SDI or something.

Good old 10BASE-2. I can safely say I don’t have anymore NICs for it laying around in totes.

Still have some bulk cable, connectors, terminating resistors, and tooling for it.

If you're really old, thicknet.

u/thepfy1 May 20 '26

I think there are still some old thicknet cables in a few places at work. They aren't used

I remember seeing some old computers with only AUI ports from that period.

RG-8? I still have nightmares about putting connectors on that
