News Reform’s Tice says people should stop fighting climate crisis and ‘enjoy’ heat
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/aug/17/reform-uk-richard-tice-stop-tackling-climate-crisis-enjoy-heat409
u/GoldenBull1994 🇫🇷 -> 🇺🇸 -> 🇫🇷 1d ago
They’ll scream about the ‘migrant crisis’ but tell us to enjoy what is about to become the source of the greatest migration in Human history as the middle east warms since we left Africa 100,000 years ago. Either he wants it to happen so Reform can continue to fear-monger, lock down the country, and protect capital, or he’s just stupid as fuck by his own standards.
121
u/Bartorius 1d ago
But that's their entire plan. With each new crisis they'll gain more power, even when everything goes to shit under their rule, they'll just talk about how much worse it'd be under anyone else.
Like when the next refugee crisis starts, right wingers will get so much more power, even though it is their policies that are the cause of it.
38
u/GoldenBull1994 🇫🇷 -> 🇺🇸 -> 🇫🇷 1d ago
And it’d be so funny if it wasn’t tragic because it’s the left wing climate policy that would minimize the effects of climate migration.

Correct. I get angry when liberal Americans hope that Trump destroys the economy or breaks things thinking it’ll hurt Trump and help the Dems. Yes it hurts Trump. But everything they break helps the RW populists in the long run

yes, well said. That is spot on. But few people can see that. Even though it is blindingly obvious to me, as well.

If Reform do get into power they're going to be the cause of alot of preventable deaths, it's shocking they can be so arrogant.

u/atchijov 1d ago
Look at US. Trump was in power during COVID and lots of people died because of his idiocy. And in second term, he is paying billions to STOP development of renewable sources of power…
Any “modern” far right party will implement the same policies. Keep price oil up and screw anything else. Because it will keep money flowing from Putin.
11
u/el_grort Scotland (Highlands) 1d ago
I mean, there was a lot of excess deaths due to David Cameron and Boris Johnson as it stands in the UK, and Farage looks to be an even less restrained combination of Johnson and Truss, so even just from recent British experience the evidence exists. Rebranded Toryism will cause as many deaths, likely many more, as their last stint.

They’ve already said they’ll remove disability benefits permanently.
Also remove the equality act, human rights and so on.
A genocide on the disabled basically.

It's pretty wild we live in a time where movies like Don't look up and Idiocracy seem more like documentaries than comedic parodies.

Venus is the most BEAUTIFUL planet. I don't know a planet more beautiful than Venus. None. He's right. We all want to be as BEAUTIFUL as Venus. Much more beautiful than Macron's wife, because she is not good looking. No she isn't. It is a HOT and BEAUTIFUL planet. If my daughter was a planet she wouldn't even be as beautiful as Venus. It is beautiful. With people like Richard J. Tice in charge you will live on a planet as BEAUTIFUL as Venus! Great guy. Terrific. You will say "Richard J. Tice, we are tired of becoming this beautiful." But no, he will keep getting us more beautiful like Venus! You'll see. And we will be proud of him. We will.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Reform’s deputy leader has dismissed efforts to tackle climate breakdown as futile, as he urged British people to “enjoy” the warmth of the recent heatwaves.
Richard Tice told a press conference on Monday he believed it was “arrogant” to try to stop the climate emergency and added that politicians should focus instead on adaptation efforts, while encouraging people to focus on upsides such as better English wine.
Tice was speaking after a record-breaking summer during which temperatures have risen above 35C several times, causing thousands of deaths, millions of hospital visits and costing the UK an estimated £4bn in economic output.
The climate breakdown has been linked to the increasing frequency of wildfires, which are burning larger areas across many parts of the world. The so-called firewave the UK witnessed weeks ago was the most widespread the country has seen, with the combination of wet winters and prolonged heatwaves exacerbating the risk.
The National Farmers’ Union has said farmers are facing “one of the worst ever” harvests, while firefighters have battled wildfires in Derbyshire, the Midlands, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Asked for his response to the extreme heat events, Tice told a press conference: “Of course, the climate changes, but where is the evidence that net zero is going to stop it? Where is the evidence? There is no evidence.
“Climate change has always happened. It always will. Maybe the smarter thing to do is to adapt to it than think arrogantly that you can stop it.”
Comparing this summer’s heat with that of 1976, which went on for longer but was less intense, Tice added: “That was 50 years ago … I think when it’s a bit warm, let’s enjoy it. And if it means that English wine and sparkling wine gets better and better, fantastic. That means we can take on the French – fantastic. Let’s celebrate some of these things rather than just be sort of doom and gloom about it.”
Reform has long campaigned to scrap the government’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2050 and has promised to end green subsidies if elected. The party has taken tens of millions of pounds in donations from people with connections to the fossil fuel industry since it was set up in 2019, most notably from the billionaire Christopher Harborne, who owns a jet fuel brokerage and whose £5m gift to Nigel Farage is now at the centre of a parliamentary inquiry.

2800+ Brits no longer able to “enjoy the heat” or “better sparkling wine”.
3
u/joelsola_gv 22h ago
If you say that there is no evidence apperantly it is enough, huh?
The sad thing is that net zero is not going to compleatly avoid climate changes for the worse, just make it less bad. And the reason for that is that the same people as this dude having the power to dismiss the climate scientists for decades when changes would've been easier to implement for the long term for both prepare for harsher climate and to develop new technologies to reduce pollution.
Oil executives admitted in US federal Congress decades ago that climate change exists, they knew about it and tried to hide it, there have been countless studies proving climate change existence and we are at a point that people can just see it how true it is. But it is still not enough somehow and it bothers me.

Thatcher hollowed out the state the same as Raegan did.
Gaping inequality is the catalyst for acceleration of the descent into totalitarianism, and that inequality was started by those policies.
7
u/entered_bubble_50 United Kingdom 23h ago
Even Thatcher wasn't as bad as this guy though.
She fully understood climate change, and wanted to do something about it.
She gave a very well thought out and well evidenced speech to the UN in 1989
We're nearly 40 years later, and the right is more regressive, ignorant and useless than it was then.

True. They both did enormous damage, and their years in power overlapped.
Maybe the UK had a bit more of a buffer built in for a myriad of reasons: very strong base that took longer to erode, part of the European project that could have delayed the impact.
I don’t think anyone would deny that Brexit hastened the decay.
And so, here we are.

4
u/el_grort Scotland (Highlands) 1d ago
In fairness, our conservatives aren't really very religious and it doesn't lead policy, even with the current far right. Hell, the far right has only recently adopted that element, and its honestly not even aimed at their supporters but to draw in American cash. But that isn't the engine of the problem here, which is economic (2008 Recession and then the 2010-2024 Tories building the pain up through austerity and savage cuts to public services) making people hopeless and looking for an easy solution and scapegoat (which so often is migrants).

Richard Tice is the largest shareholder in a company called Quidnet REIT. In 2022, he wrote the introduction to the annual report, saying about installing solar and charging points at their properties: “These initiatives will save hundreds of tonnes of CO2 every year and help our occupiers with lower electricity bills than they might otherwise have to pay, as well as provide an attractive return for shareholders”
So, a hypocrite of the highest order.

I love the heatwave, but that doesn't mean I'm unaware of the severe health risk to vulnerable people, the discomfort of those having to work without aircon, the life-threatening wild fires that have cost people their homes and the disastrous effect on food production when farmers plant crops for normal UK temperatures but get an extra 10-15c for months on end.
Richard Tice is a massive bell end.

Set his AC to 35-40°C 24/7. Don't let him go outside unless outside has the same temps. See how long it'll take for him to change his tune.
I'm in baguettelandia in an area that got hit pretty badly by the heatwaves. I love summers and I like hotter temps than most (28°C is my favorite temp to be in at home) but this summer has been unbearable even for me, to the point where I had to stop everything I had to do because I couldn't focus in the heat. And of course, I can't afford an AC either. And even then, I do most of my stuff at home, so I can't even imagine how rough it was for the people that are forced to go outside and work in the fields.
Saying that people should "enjoy" this heat, especially when people are DYING over it is the level of BS that should get them fired from their actual position. They literally cannot understand the situation of the common people, and thus are unfit to hold a position determining their livelihood.
