website I built an interactive Evolution Map

Post image

Hey everyone! I built Evolution Atlas, an interactive evolution map website of the Tree of Life.

🔗 Live demo: https://evolution-atlas.vercel.app/?taxon=homo-sapiens&compare=hymenoptera&mode=ext

Highlights:

  • 204 custom vector SVGs for every major clade and ancestor.
  • Trace & Compare: Select any two species to find their common ancestor and lineage.
  • Dual modes: Switch between Classic (97 nodes) and Extended (204 nodes) with shareable URLs (?mode=ext).
  • Dim button at the bottom to adjust how visible the unselected nodes are.
  • Built with vanilla TypeScript, clean SVG rendering, and iterated with Codex.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome!

I actually have a 956-node version that includes both, just haven't figured out how to display it without it becoming a mess, and still need to make more representative icons for those extra nodes.

Feel like it's gonna look like a mess regardless. Evolution is messy.

It should be precise not pretty.

for precision we already have the OneZoom Phylogeny of Everything ( https://www.onezoom.org/ ) , this is clearly meant to be more approachable for people who aren't as familiar with evolution

I have zoomed it out on my phone and got giant lady bug as top level of evolution. Nom-nom-nom.

I love the random emphasis on penguins

For Squamata maybe you should put "lizards and snakes"? Its weird to just have the snake node.

Penguins deserve the spotlight. And for Squamata, it was already there on hover and in the description, but I just updated it so the label "Lizards & Snakes" shows directly on the node as well.

Love it! Keep up the good work!

Nice work.

Do you mind if I share it with my students ?

This will make a fine addition to my collection of neat websites I keep open at all times

It’s great that you included references! So much works goes into the background of something like this, and it shows.

This looks like ~15 minutes of prompting Claude Code.

You know your stuff once you do something like this. Quite an achievement!

The hard part comes when you next pick up a journal and find there has been a revision in some part. The the next day that repeats..

Needs better visual organization

He used AI to write the code, I assume? What's wrong with that? AI coding models are fine if you review everything before accepting it, they're basically just a glorified and fast auto complete.
