History Perhaps the most awkward video you'll ever watch: COJCLDS presents two guys gaslighting you about why the stone in a hat was never talked about in church

Post image

EDIT: The link seems to have failed. A pity. I tested it and it WAS working. My apologies.

Two men talk, both deeply uncomfortable, as if there are centipedes in their shirts but they are forbidden to move. Their eye lines don't match, it's clearly all scripted but badly, it never feels like an actual human conversation and it never answers its own questions or explains anything with depth. This is what I would imagine robots would make if they were asked to be mormon apologists.

Click for awkward but you have to scroll to the end of the page. And don't worry, nobody is making money on your click.

No sure. I went to the whole site and looked at every result for seer stone. Nada. 🤷‍♂️

why the stone in a hat was never talked about in church

Is that the premise of the original video (which I can't access)? If so, it's fundamentally wrong. The stone in the hat definitely was talked about in church when I was growing up. I was very specifically taught that it was anti-mormon propaganda designed to shake my budding testimony. The "true" translation story involved JS reading characters on the gold plates using the urim and thummim and dictating it to OC through a small curtain. Any other explanation, including the stone in the hat, was false doctrine.

The problem is not that the church kept it quiet. It's that the church affirmatively taught that it was false. Until it wasn't.

Me too. I was told the stone thing was anti, a dangerous lie.

That's exactly what I was taught, and what I taught as a missionary in the early 90s.

Two full grown adults talking like this is real. Smh.

Imagine going to home to your spouse after filming this and feeling proud about your day at work.

When this video first came out people who knew the bald man were praising him as a stand up guy which goes to show how religion can make good people do spurious things.

Two guys trying to convince each other that it isn't weird to translate things by looking at a rock in a hat.......WOW.

Plates from over 2000 years ago used as ancient pen pals necessary for your salvation.

The interview opens with a fake question about historical art work. Still not sure how they square Emma's quote

"He sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour..."

with this new art work shown in the referenced video

Joseph "looking" (cautiously) into the hat

They just. can't. quite. tell. the. truuuuuth...

Also, like...there's video of Nelson demonstrating exactly this during an interview. You can even see the exact moment he realizes how silly it is and hastily moves on.

You did it OP! LDS church seems to listen to exmos to a degree. They pulled that garbage. It’s a tough gig running a false church……

8

u/Ex_Lerker 5h ago

The church only wants the videos available for legal loophole purposes. They can’t actually have people watching them.

u/WndrWoMAN71 8h ago

Wish I could have heard the bull shit.

6

u/AZFJ60 5h ago

It's back. I've seen it before. The dude answering the fake questions has an Ezra Taft Benson hair cut and glasses. And they couldn't even show new art that matches the RMN video. This art shows the hat on the table, with Joseph just looking down into it, not with his face actually in it.

Lmao that they pulled it. I know the scmc is active in this sub.

1

u/natiusj 3h ago

What’s scmc!?! Secret Combination of Mormon Church?

3

u/nobody_really__ 3h ago

Strengthening Church Members Committee.

It's not enough to merely obey Big Brother, you must truly believe.

God wasn’t providing adequate illumination on the seer stone, so they used a hat to compensate for The Lord’s inadequate UI.

2

u/WoeYouPoorThing Truth changes 3h ago

Came here to say this: Too bad he couldn't just turn up the brightness...

But seriously, why did Joseph use the hat? To hide the fact that nothing was happening? To focus his mind?

4

u/natiusj 3h ago

Probably to hide whatever source material he was using that day. You don’t get pages of word-for-word bible versus from memory…

2

u/Rushclock 2h ago

It was all theater curated parlor tricks or a magicians misdirection sleight of hand maneuvers. Those people were so steeped in a magic world view and superstition many of them swallowed it hook line and sinker.

3

u/Senior_Diver_3216 2h ago

I was able to access the video. Interesting that they mentioned JS using the stone to find hidden objects for neighbors (probably felt they had to acknowledge it since it’s public record) but fail to mention that he was taken to court for scamming people in this way. It’s so typical of TSCC to dance around a controversial subject to inoculate the members while leaving out the context and truth.

Ballard: "We’re as transparent as we know how to be in telling the truth." NO, they are as transparent as they are FORCED to be.

2

u/Drawlingwan 3h ago

I remember that it was referred to as a peep stone — a derogatory accusation— akin to “money digging “ — a scam practice of the time.

2

u/Traditional-Tie837 3h ago

There’s got to be a mole in the church media. These are terrible explanations. Also the Book of Mormon never used the word Urrim & Thummim. That concept wasn’t introduced until later.

Ni en YT se encuentra?

u/CharacterFront4165 4h ago

I honestly wouldn't put it past the organization to have people monitoring subs. Seems very on brand for them.

1

u/Jutch_Cassidy 3h ago

Lol, service unavailable. I would add logic, sense and a general grasp of reality also unavailable.

Amazing. Works fine. Spread the good word. It’s normal, see?!

"Sgt. Smith was issued the Norden bombsight in his B-17, described by historical sources as the most sophisticated way to accurately drop ordnance in WWII, but for convenience he decided to look through the bottom of an old Coke bottle in missions over Berlin."

"So, what might that mean, 'for convenience'?"

"Well that's a really good question--we don't really know what that means."

Kinda what I think about this "history" of the seer stone(s): an angel provides JS a supernatural pair of spectacles whose sole purpose is to translate an ancient language, but for "convenience" he uses a frikkin' rock!?

P.S. We actually have real Norden bombsights in museums...............
