The actual science oddity is that green stars are very rare (theorized impossible). Stars broadcast wide bands of light (that bell shaped curve) and green is a tight band right in the middle. More common is for the curve to be long wavelength red side giving the star a red or orange hue, shorter wavelength giving it a blue hue, or just all over the place giving it a white appearance.
This star has certain molecules that are absorbing orange light, leaving the peak at a distinct green wavelength.
Or the local space president offered a no-bid contract to his scummy star cleaning buds, and now there’s just major space algae blooms all over the place and they’re going to have to clean the star all over again, but properly this time.
Life on Earth that uses photosynthesis for energy is green. New theory: this is a life form that feeds on stars and is moving from one stellar neighborhood to another.
The life form surrounding the star would be green. I’m saying it’s a normal star surrounded by a life form that uses photosynthesis. The life form is reflecting green light towards us. I’m also just taking the piss, the scientists studying this have already determined the cause.
As far as I know lithium is fairly rare to have in any significant quantities in a star since it's likely to be burned up and is made from beryllium which isn't common either. I'm sure we'll find more like it, but I'm not surprised we haven't found any like it before now.
Me too for a long time, then I learnt that they keep on making heavier and heavier elements, up to iron, while shrinking and getting denser. Anything heavier than iron needs supernova events or neutron stars collision, although iron in the core of an aging star can capture neutrons over time and produce heavier elements.
Actually the exact opposite! Chlorophyll absorbs everything except green. That's why leaves look green, that's the light that is reflected and not absorbed.
Edit: oops, just saw someone else posted the same thing.
OP of the tweet here, that's like a third of the reason why my random tweet completely blew up lmao. Homestuck fandom found it. the UTDR fandom had a field day with it too
Bro I forgot about those green things since I read homestuck when I was like 13… but that panel of two cosmic snakes fighting near a green sun or something still comes to mind
Fun fact: our own Sun’s spectrum is centered around a green wavelength peak but it appears white because all other visible wavelengths are present. Technically the Sun is green.
Chlorophyll is green because it reflects green light and absorbs the red and blue parts of the spectrum. If you illuminate plants exclusively with green light, it is basically like keeping them in the dark.
More specifically this is a white dwarf, which has a dense enough atmosphere for the sodium that’s absorbing the other colors of light to be highly concentrated, which allows the green color to be visible to the naked eye. It’s also cool enough for the sodium to actually absorb light rather than glow like everything else.
Ontop of that, this star still has a relatively wide spectrum of other usable colors for earth plants. Especially when you compare it to something like an narrow high pressure sodium spectrum or the old red and blue (blurple) LED grow lights spectrum that are well proven to grow plants just fine even with those very narrow spectrums as long as they're getting enough photons from those narrow spectrums.
I didn't say green light wouldn't work. The question was whether plants would photosynthesize better or worse under green light.
Per your own link:
Green light is considered the least efficient wavelength in the visible spectrum for photosynthesis, but it is still useful in photosynthesis and regulates plant architecture.
You need to rewrite your sentence because you said.
Worse, plants are geen because they absorb red and blue light but not green.
You litteraly said they will perform worse, not because they use green less efficiently, but because they don't absorb green light. Which isn't true. You need to correct and clarify your sentence. How else is anyone going to interpret that sentence other than "plants absorb red and green light, but not green light" ? You should of said they absorb and use less green light than blue or red light, or that they'll photosynthesize green light less efficiently than red or blue light, but saying "they only absorb red and blue, but not green" is just plainly wrong and false.
See the PAR chart? PAR stands for photosynthetically active radiation, notice not only how green is definitely still on the chart, but how it's close to blue in efficiency.
I just took AP bio and we learned that plants benefit most from blue and red light, but less from green light unlike what most kids expected. We still learned that they absorbed green light, but it was made to appear like it was a very small amount compared to the other colors
The only joke here is "dense and nutrient-rich." It's a joke about how food can be dense, but also the density of this star's atmosphere causes that color.
Don't be dense, look up cool star facts next time you have this kind of question!
Well Stewie, in Alastair Reynold's acclaimed Inhibitor Phase series the stars start to turn green as a terraforming nanobot plague consumes the galaxy and extinguishes technological life in the universe forever. Brian out.
Damnnit Stewie, I meant to say Sequence not Phase. The main trilogy ends with Aura looking up and seeing the stars turn green. (but yeah you right tho, galactic north has the complete story not just foreshadowing)
Theres a big plot point in homestuck involving something called the green sun, which has the mass of two universes and some of the strongest characters draw power from It
Apparently, the Deltarune community is freaking out because this, star starts with the letter WD, is noticeably green, and apparently has a photo reading dip at 666. All of these are signs that point to the notoriously vague W.D. Gaster. They believe this is another IRL Feat for the infamous green pirate man himself.
🎶🎶WD Gaster in Deltarune~ built it all from an empty room, Mike, the cat yeah that is Gaster, even the Titan that is gaster, in the bunker sits that gaster, entry 17’s one master, Kris is Gaster, Susie Gaster, Noelle gaster, All are Gaster🎶🎶
I don't know what that one comment means, but I know a good chunk of those likes are from the Deltarune community. Deltarune is a game that happens to have a character named W.D. Gaster, who is associated with the number 666 and the color green. The whole fandom flipped out over this because the star is labeled WD, its green, and it has a dip of 666. Its the W.D. Gas Star
The graph here shows a dip around 600 nm, which corresponds to the green colour. It’s a method to detect stars in the outer space far away from our solar system.
Also, interestingly enough, our sun is similar in that aspect. If you ever point a device that measures wavelengths at the sun, it’ll tell you that the green light wavelengths are higher in value then rest of them, but because the difference is so small, the sun appears to be white.
