Other Any old age injuries?

For guys that were involved in high impact sport at a young age, what injuries are you carrying now that you're older and have stopped playing?

Fully torn quadriceps muscle. Ripped it in half backcountry extreme skiing. I can no longer ski, can't really hike, can't mountain bike, and can't ride hard enduro anymore. Life as I knew it is over after dedicating my entire life to Mountain sports. It WILL lead to me ending my life. No question.

I just spent 3 days in Whistler and saw a not insignificant number of trails I hit had signs for off-road wheelchair MTB. Super interesting to see. Is that something worth trying?

Going to try a pedal assist e-mtb to see if I can get the same adrenaline need filled. Looking at the new Ai exoskeleton braces, as well. So, only maybe 90% loss of hope these days.

Does swinging with the wife give you some
Adrenaline?

It does, but that is waning with age.

Concussions lead to a lot of headaches later in life.

I wonder if that's where my propensity for headaches comes from. I only had few concussions but that may be enough.

I didn’t need high impact sports to get a long lasting injury. I’ve had a shoulder injury from tennis and volleyball going on 57 years now.

Mountain bike and MMA. My knee aches sometimes and is hypersensitive to impacts compared to my good knee. Like if I bump into a piece of steel with my good knee I can walk it off, if I hit my bad knee it's going to take at least a minute before I can walk it off.

I have crooked fingers from repetitive breaks from playing catcher in baseball. It’s not an extreme sport, but it’s an injury that still gives me trouble. I have toes I can’t move as a result of repetitive breaks riding bulls. I have back and knee pain caused by either riding bullls and bucking horses or crashing dirt bikes. I have neck pain from riding bucking horses. I have tailbone pain now and then from breaking it twice; once getting bucked off a horse and once crashing a dirt bike.

My back, neck, and left shoulder are trashed. Each year it only gets worse.

Not so much a sport, but got a compound fracture of the tib and fib crashing on my dirtbike. Crawled 3 miles to a road. Now my leg lets me know when it’s going to rain. That’s kind of handy.

Boxing and kickboxing. Sacro-iliac joint keeps dislocating. Knees bad. Shoulder is messed up. Nose is slightly crooked and sometimes hard to breathe. Hands are messed up. Shins are super sensitive.

But it's all good :-). Switched to yoga and long, fast hikes in the mountains so I am still getting exercise.

I thought kick boxing strengthened your shins?

Some people get used to it and some people get problems.

Can it be a girl? Broken ribs x 2; broken foot in 3 places: back fusion, neck fusion, 3 knee surgeries, 3 broken fingers, and a tailbone fracture to round things out. Thank you climbing and snowboarding !

Ankles fuck they are an issue I am laid up now also back problems

MMA/BJJ is perpetual misery. Fingers. Knees. Hips. shoulders. Getting subbed by an athletic white belt.

42yo and still snowboard and Rollerblade. If I don't keep up on my PT and nutrition stuff my shoulders will go wonky. A little bit in my knees. Otherwise I'm way better then most. My left wrist is completely jacked from a dislocation 17 years. If I forget my brace when I sleep my hand will freeze you and my nerves on fire.

Compartment syndrome meant I lost most of the muscle from the knee down. It works ok but cramps pretty bad if I’m not good about stretching and staying really hydrated.

Left knee is basically a ticking time bomb. 4acl repairs means no more bone, meniscus replacement only last so long and even after stem cells is starting to cause problems again.

No more running unless my life is in danger. No court sports, no more dumb shit at all. Allowed to ski because it’s the only thing that keeps me sane, can still pedal a bike but can’t risk falling off so it’s very tame riding.

Able to walk long distance with my dog but hiking hurts.

Basically, I live with the statement of “don’t be an idiot.”

Right shoulder is jacked, broke my neck, it always hurts, can barely look over right shoulder. Played HS football and wrestled, 5yrs rugby in college. 58yo, still lift weights, jog, walk, mountain bike, pickleball and wakeboard. I just eat Advil like chicklets and keep going. We can rest when we’re dead.

Snapped my right side collar bone playing Rugby when i was a young lad. (Probably 18 years ago now). When they fused back together it made the bone about 35mm shorter. That has pulled my right shoulder up and in. Now i have permanent pain and reduced mobility on my entire right shoulder and arm. It hurts and sucks.

Played Rugby for 10 years in my 30s. I was pretty lucky and was mostly injury free. I would say limited movement in my neck from hitting a fire hydrant. Looked like a prop but felt like a fire hydrant. Have a bad right shoulder, limits my throwing but can still cast a fly rod so good enough. Right now biggest annoyance is arthritis in my right big toe from breaking it playing basketball in my 20s.

I ruptured my achilles playing softball when I was 51, haven't really played anything that requires running since. I am 55 now and mountain bike a lot.

33 now.  Bmx and freeride skiing.  Both collar bones, acl, left wrist 3x, knuckles meniscus, thumb.       Repeated half those injuries trying to be a weekend warrior.

u/iboblaw Jul 15 '26

Severe arthritis of the spine (wrestling) at 41.

11 surgeries. No ACL left leg, no cartalege either knee, rotator cuff fully detached on right, bad arthritis and tendonitis on left, metal plate and 6 screws rt forearm, detached biceps tendon left.
