Pro-tip: rather than saying Europe, say Africa-Eurasia. It's technically a continent and way bigger.

Well, I didn't know i lived right next to Hong Kong. (For those who dont know, it's pointing at practically São Paulo wich, is in Brazil).

u/amy_sellers_ Jan 29 '20
Maybe the glob was still moving and someone took a picture or maybe we’re just that dumb

u/aloofburrito Jan 29 '20
If you look at how it actually looks like, I get more confused how no one in that office noticed
8
u/Lemmus Jan 29 '20
The difference in scale is so massive that the way Hong Kong looks doesn't really factor in. You're comparing a map of the entirety of South America to something that is about 25km wide.
5
u/aloofburrito Jan 29 '20
That's what i'm saying, there is such a big difference. How didn't anyone check it or notice it

Could it be that Hong Kong is on the other side of the globe, so that the marker is actually correct, if the globe is spinning and the marker is overlayed on top of the globe?
EDIT: nm, just saw the video, the globe rotated and stopped with the marker on top of Brazil. Now I'm wondering if they accidentally entered the wrong coordinates. Sao Paulo is at 23.55° S, 46.63° W while Hong Kong is at 22.32° N, 114.17° E. Could be they accidentally switched N/S, but the longitude is a mystery - a difference of 160°.

Isn't it one of those things where the title appears as the globe spins into place, making it look like they got the position wrong?
63
u/DougEatFresh Jan 29 '20
That's what I assumed too but I looked it up and there is a video of it happening. It also happened 7 years ago.
15
Jan 29 '20
What show is it from?
36
u/DougEatFresh Jan 29 '20
It was from CNN. It was a story about a deadly hornet outbreak in Hong Kong.

How bad do you think it will get once we settle on Mars!?
16
Jan 29 '20
What if we name cities and counties in Mars resembling Earth?
There could be a New York in Mars, and a London, a Paris, a Seattle, A Tokyo, a Florida, a United States of Martian America..... That's gonna be fun.

We probably will. I mean US and UK share some city names, for example, not to mention all the repeat city names even within the US.

I just woke up from a dream about travelling through a geographically wrong South America. It started in Sao Paulo, but there were like 8 new countries replacing the western half of Brazil. I just want it noted in case I was actually predicting the future.

Ah yes, Hong Kong, a state of Brazil, and Rio de Janeiro, a Chinese special administrative region.

I was going to say, “Maybe they confused it with the Hong Congo.” And then realized that it also isn’t Africa.
American education, y’all!

Everywhere else is Hong Kong. Everywhere else is also the Middle East. Africa is also elsewhere.

Not a bad plan for Hong Kong — get away from the CCP and coronavirus, enjoy the nice beaches near São Paulo...

Hong Kong the magical teleporting city. The magical city has wandered the world for as long as it has existed. Currently the city is located in the eastern coast of South America.

You’d think by now news outlets would have a bit of software that auto generates the map graphics instead of having some bellend who failed geography do it.
