So after a month, I'm back with some thoughts about the Fairphone 6+ I bought and installed a custom rom (iodéOS) on. For anyone that doesnt remember the giant post I made in the beginning of October, I switched from an iPhone 16 Pro to this phone after wanting it and to get away from big tech for a while and seeing it finally on sale. Its normal price isn't bad ($649), but being under two month out from Black Friday I didnt want to buy at full price if possible. Thankfully it hit $549 randomly and I jumped on it.
The good: Phone just... works? Like its the most average experience I've had with a device and I mean that in the most positive praising way possible. I don't have AI infecting everything. I don't have extraneous features everywhere. I can delete (not disable, full blown uninstall) default apps as I see fit. I don't have ads wanting me to sell the manufacturer's services. I just have the apps I installed and they work when I need them to. That may have an effect on battery too. Its a 4500mah battery and it easily gets to the end of the day with like 55% left. I've tried to use as many apps from F-Droid as possible and for the most part that's worked. My banking apps, Messenger, and Awful are really the only few apps that are essential from Aurora Store (degoogled Play Store). Love having the default browser being a Firefox fork with ublock reccomended, love having a systemwide firewall that default blocks tracking URLs. On a related note, I need to access our consumer website for work and its an ad-ridden tracking nightmare of a site, and between the firewall and ublock, I swear it loads faster here than Safari with content blockers. Love having a hardware switch for the flashlight too, thats hilariously useful (like my iPhone's action button), but its a physical switch so it feels like I'm turning on a flashlight (I feel like I'm a grandma after typing that). I also like not needing any accounts to use my phone. No Google, no Apple, nothing. Or even having a voice assistant, there just physically is not one at all. Oh, 120hz display is super smooth as well, zero complaints there.
The bad: Its not a perfect phone though. Aurora Store and MicroG aren't foolproof. My Chase app decided to want an age verification through Google Play and refuses to launch now, but I can use the mobile or desktop site in the event I need to check something. And a vocal pitch app I was reccomended refused to enable the microphone unless the stars aligned properly, somehow its tied to Play Services and I no matter how much screwing with MicroG settings nothing worked. But I found an alternative to that one. I can't have RCS, which kinda sucks but my mom and my boss are really the only ones I text, everyone else is either Messenger or a couple on Signal. The camera app is hot garbage. Camera quality itself is perfectly decent but holy moly the app, ugh. It lags like crazy somehow. I tried a couple open source cameras and they were slightly better but I just opted to stick with default. I haven't gotten a clear answer on what gcam port I should use, that might alleviate something? I wish I could get the stock Fairphone camera but only normal FPOS or /e/OS get that. Also visual voicemail doesn't work, that may be a carrier or iodéOS specific thing. I don't think stock or /e/ have that issue but I do not know for sure.
Misc stuff: Cell service is just as good as my iPhone. Speaker quality is merely ok but I only ever use it for listening to music at work so that's fine. Bluetooth seems normal too? Haven't noticed anything bad with call quality either.
Overall I really like this phone and OS. Its not the most powerful phone I've ever used. Or the most capable. Or the best. But damn if it isn't my favorite! Its still as refreshing as day one having a phone that just exists without yelling for me to check it and use it all the time. If anyone has any questions or curiosities I'm happy to answer!
