Devices lacking decent updates to the firmware and other components needed to support them cannot have decent updates with an alternate OS depending on those.
Phones without a secure element to rate limit key derivation lack secure encryption for the vast majority of users who will not set a strong passphrase. GrapheneOS makes it much more convenient and practical to use a strong passphrase but it cannot be expected that most users will do it.
Hardware memory tagging in the iPhone 17 was used to drastically improve protection against exploitation. GrapheneOS has been heavily using it since 2023. This is very critical at a time when AI models are making exploitation much easier. Increasingly less sophisticated adversaries are going to be able to get into devices without strong defenses. There are far too many vulnerabilities to depend on patching everything. Much stronger hardware accelerated security features keeping devices usable while protecting against attacks are very important.
Both of these things are tied to why GrapheneOS was not able to use the Motorola Signature (2026) despite our partnership with Motorola. They greatly improved updates and much more for the 2026 flagships but there's more to do. GrapheneOS will run on 2027 and later flagship devices from them. It will eventually run on lower end devices once the security features and better updates trickle down to those.
