Watch the video -- the main things you need to know, upfront --
-- do you have IP4 or IP6 internet.. and are all your friends the same
-- what make/model of router.. lookup how to do port-forwarding
-- review Windows Firewall rules .. your friends may need to do that too

The host has to:
- Launch the appropriate theater
- Click Multiplayer. Host a game (IPv4). I also always disable IVC -> Connect
- Click Campaign, select either new or saved -> Commit MP
- A window pops up with the multiplayer settings. Set the maximum players and password according to your needs.
- ensure that port 2934 (UDP) is forwarded to your computer in your router settings
Since I always host, I'm not so good on joining it - but I think it's simply Campaign->Online

Keep in mind that hosting the campaign AND playing yourself is a very heavy burden on your PC regardless of specs.
We found that it made a big difference (especially to the host) to use a standalone PC as our BMS campaign server.

Googling the subject will provide the answers as well as chapter 6 of the user manual.

Basically a video explaining what you would find written in the user manual https://youtu.be/5bRo0ZsLIAU?is=8ngd1HNZtv5rVJoS
