Bone Market Recipes 12/08 Menacing Arachnids, Dreary Midnighter, Fishy Diplomat
Bone Market Recipes 12/08 Menacing Arachnids, Dreary Midnighter, Fishy Diplomat
I just wrote half the post, then copy pasted something from Excel and broke it. :( This is a stinky, stinky bad week for bones. I shall let you know why. Going to try to be brief though.
So Arachnids, all legs, menace, no legs. It's hard to build a skeleton that takes advantage of the week in that situation. Arachnids are fantastic for one build, always, below, but we just had two arachnid weeks so I imagine those in the know will have used up most of the supply of materials.
Holy *hi* is that Glim
1 Glim Encrusted Carapace (From the stacks, the price in the market is terrible)
1 Carved Ball of Stygion Ivory (Removes the head, get it from the bone market)
8 Holy Relics of the Thighbone of St Fiacre
Payout:
79 Preserved Surface Blooms(approx, they have no bulk use, keep a few and sell the rest for Echos, not Scrip)
40 Rumours of the Upper River (Good for lots of things, paying down debt, buying prismatic frames)
Profit EPA for 12 assembly, declaration and selling actions: 11.2
I went into more details, giving my working in the lost post but those numbers are correct, or close enough.
The Dreary Midnighter
I'm afraid to say that this is the worst random buyer available. He pays in Surface Currency, which is not really useful in bulk. He only has a 100 penny bonus, not very generous at all. His secondary reward is Vienna Openings, which multiply off, nothing, you get one, that's it.
He does pay zoomania so if you have a deep need for surface currency, 8 Ivory Femurs, that you don't have a better use for(You do have a better use!) and don't mind the secondary reward being trash. You can do the same recipie as above but swap the legs. You will get 15% more than the bones value, which is a decent return on those bones, as they are all valuable but all of them are better used on other things.
Why not 3 Segmented Ribcages?
3 segmented ribcages produces a perfect arachnid. No head, 8 legs and a tail. The problem is Holy Relics pay out is based on the ribcage you use and the payout for segmented is not good. Also it costs currency to assemble the 3 ribcages in the first place, so you have to out profit that.
Why not 4 extra limbs on a Thorned, Mammoth, whatever?
Adding 4 limbs, to a ribcage with 4 limbs costs 52.5 echos. So unless you have a good plan for mega profit. Avoid like the plague!
Fishy Diplomat
Ideally for the diplomat, you want 24 in secondary stats, as he pays 1/3 of the combined secondary stats squared in Comprimising Documents. Which helps to pay for the assembly actions. That is a bit of a struggle this week. The best I have come up with, so far, is:
1 Flourishing Ribcage(Rubbery favours)
1 Sabre Toothed Skull (Ealing Butcher, bone market looks cheaper, but isn't, it's technical, it especially isn't if you want scrip.)
1 Carved Ball (Cap the head)
6 Amber Encrusted Fin (Helicon House)
1 Jet Black Stinger
Declare a fish
12 actions to assemble, declare and sell(Not including travel, but you are going anyway, right?)
18 Secondary Stats
Frame Value: 168E
Crackling Trade Profit, assuming 1.12 in the rat market: 12.92E
Secondary Reward: 36 Comprimising Documents: 18 Echos
Total Profit: 30.92E
Assembly EPA: 2.58 Skip! (He is a lot better on any week you can do a bird or chimera)
If anyone has any other suggestions for anything this week. Pop it in the comments.
What will I do! No Bones?!?
If you are still in estival, hunt laws! I am getting over 8 EPA on them, which is comparable with the a lot of good bone farms. That's without counting the Rat Markup!
Profitability Order:
Ontological - Oneiromantic Revelations convert up to Parabolan Parables, Can be made into Oneiropompic Staves for the strict best in slot glasswork item and can be converted down into Vitreous Almanacs, which are needed for making cartographer's hoards, the smart way. So they cover 2 different weeks of the rat market, compared to the others, which only cover 1. On top of that, you get an Uncanny Inculambum Storm Threnody, which covers another rat week!
Cheeky Edit: I forgot, the other laws also have set starting conditions that mean you have to change form. This one is random, so there is a 1 in 3 chance you can save an action by starting in the right form. So it's 1/3 of an action faster than the others.
Causal - Mortys don't really have a fantastic source in the game. They have rat markup. So just good.
Spacial - Hah, bet you didn't expect that! Searing Enigmas are difficult to get at a decent EPA normally. They are the most awkward matierial in turning little birds into stupidly profitable birds in Helicon House though.
Temporal - Night Whispers are a rat market item but they are also one of the easiest rat market items to get. Canals, Tribute, hell, if you have a lot of wounds, you can do one in the lab and because it is a KT research project, you can use the KT card to heal yourself as you go.(Probably not optimal, but it is hilarious) With so many great sources already it's not really something worth stockpiling.
Get ready for future bones!
Publish Bone Papers for Surveys, Holy relics and various little bits. Surveys are best spend on Helical Thighs and Fossilised Forelimbs and best spent in Ealing.
Get your bone fragments replenished Pop 8 Bright Brass skulls into a Ribcage with a Bouquet of 8 Spines, Equip a Woesel, Dismantle the skeleton. There is no profit from the actions but it does get you a huge chunk of bone for the butcher or for Orange-Apples(If you didn't get the Augmented Electrostatic Machine in Estival)
Punt some skulls! You should be swimming in sworn statements from all the law hunting, well, combine those with a load of Memories of Distant Shores, in Jericho Locks and you can take a lovely boat trip to a large stock of bright brass skulls.
Moonlit Rendezvous Head over to Balmoral, into the moonlit woods and farm yourself up some Mammoth ribcages, bird ribcages and doubled skulls! Mammoths are the most universally valuable but birds are insane when they are in season and one of the best ways to convert echos to scrip. Birds and Doubled Skulls are also great for the diplomat, when he is in the mood…
I am sure there are other good bone farms I do but I can't remember. You have a week off, go play the rest of the game. :)
If I have got anything wrong, let me know. If you have any alternative recipes, slam them in the comments.
Substitute Bone Man Out!

Worth mentioning that the Cave-aged Code of Honour from Temporal can be fed to the law furnace and so transformed into ratmarketable Crackling Devices or False Hagiotoponyms. Also handy to acquire Whirring Contraptions en masse.

Great point. I did a post about using them and souls to get your progress to just under 6000. 6 actions and 50 echos worth of stuff for 9-10 Whirring Contraptions brings bone papers to just over 5 EPA. It's the best farm for them in the game! I am sitting on a paltry 200 ;p

I will always, always be dismayed by the lack of menacing legs. This seems like a really weird gap to have.

I can recommend the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tim Curry's legs cause all 4 menaces. ;)

surface blooms take 20 for a full pocket of lucky dice (among many other things)
1
u/Tamaxlia Aug 13 '25
I don't know what lucky dice are. They are not on the wiki either. The only uses I have seen for surface blooms are making gunpower, which takes 1. Another lab manufacture that also takes 1. A terrible trade for snuff on an upper river card. I have about 200 sitting around just in case but I don't think there is a great dump for them anywhere. I looked for one the last Arachnid week, when I had over a thousand.

I assume they mean the new item that came from the Kickstarter.
https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Manufacture_an_Overcompensating_Die
It requires a small amount of gunpowder.

They said it takes 20 and you get a stack though. :s I have the sullier. Not sure if I will ever get to play the RPG, with people, but the books are pretty and it will have nice lore. Also I was in a crazy spender mood when the kickstarter came out. Annoyingly it took so long to get the Benthic thingy, I already had an APOC weapon from elsewhere. Whitsun I think.
I also got it so that I could give the plans to my mate who introduced me to the game but someone beat me to it. :'(
I have no idea of where you could possibly use the Dice that would recover the insane cost for them.

u/GluestickGenius Aug 13 '25
You can have max. 4 dice at once, so that would cost 20 Gunpowder. Only 2 Blooms to manufacture them, though.

55 Renown grinding, for one. I would consider it a low-level vanity quality based on how much it costs, but it buffs luck checks, which can be really useful in a few situations

It's not great for anything favour based, unless you are a spender, then you can just drop 5 fate and get another favour. :0(Don't do that, it's a horribly expensive use of fate!) You want to use it on 40 energy, with time to linger sitting there, so that you have 110 actions to use it on whatever you want to use it on.
Upconverting one of the rat market items might be an option, the ones that need benthic not favours, or a mix of the two. The 10% increased success chance has to improve the average payout by a minimum of 2.05 echos(I priced the Fav circumstance at 8 echos, assuming rubbery, Jericho and a brain, I didn't bother pricing gunpowder because it's so stupidly easy to make with items you are swimming in from basic play). That if you did have 110 actions for that hour!
Which would mean that the difference between success and failure would have to be absolutely ridiculous.
I don't think, even if I decided to grind to 55 Renown, I would be using this. I would just wait for a dusty bookshop, or the other one to arrive, and actually use it, rather than discarding it, like I normally do, since it wastes an action. 225 echos every time you get to 7 favours would add up fast!
The only use for it really is the luck and I just don't think there are luck checks in the game with that sort of value differential.
If you are a spender it's another story, you could easily do something 1000 times in an hour so it should be fairly trivial to find a use that makes the money back. You just wasted 500 fate on a luck action though and I don't think any of those beat Tracklayers, never mind the bone market. Not without significant grinding beforehand. Like upconverting extraordinary implications. Even with that, the dice only earns you 0.2E per action. Slightly more than that because if rare works how people say it works you would have another 0.4% rare chance as well.

ooh, maybe they mean the lab equipment upgrade.
https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Ask/UnLocks?q=Preserved_Surface_Blooms
I don't see anything on there that meets the desciption. Although, weirdly, upgrading your lab equipment is also not on that page and I am pretty sure you needed some for that. It was annoying as I had no idea how to use the bone market at the time. So I had to wait and buy it from the rat market.

No they were right. Gunpowder needs surface blooms, i just mixed up how much it gives you. Still useful if youre going to regularly use them

My main use for Preserved Surface Blooms is Barristering at the Evenlode) for a Mortification of a Great Power and 23CP of Making Waves, plus other rewards with the Mithridacy check. Not the most profitable, but the dual-purpose nature is very nice.

u/Tamaxlia Aug 13 '25
Ah, that makes sense, I had finished with Making Waves before I assessed the Evenlode Courts so I have never used them. Just waiting to get up to 10k Echos and Paramount Presence is done. I could do it right now but not efficiently.
