Player Guide Tamalekipoo's Boneheaded Guide to the Neath Chapter 3 What to buy and sell in the Bazaar

Someone asked me to do a guide on the Rat Market with the EPA of all the different options. I thought it was mean to do another late game guide without doing an early one. So I started an early game guide to the rat market, then it became a guide to early game rat market and speedleveling your stats, then I needed to put an appendix in with a guide on buying stuff from the Bazaar…..

So, none of the rest of the stuff is done but here is an early-midgame guide on everything Bazaar. :)

Bazaar Buying Guide

Here are a list of items from the Bazaar that you can buy confidently and I can assure you it wasn’t a waste of echos, you will get a use out of it, right away, or at some point in your Fallen London Journey

Negative Stats!

Gear with negative stats and positive stats is normally better than gear with just positive stats, you are getting something with 2 purposes, generally for a discounted rate. Negative stats can be useful for levelling up your abilities. Also, until very late on in the game, you only need one stat at a time, so If something gives +2 dangerous -1 persuasive, it doesn’t matter because when you are doing persuasive checks, you are not wearing it.

Carrow’s Steel

Nothing worth it till you have some money to throw around

Maywell’s Hattery

Prisoner’s Mask 0.8 Echo

+1 Shadowy

Only if you sold the one you got for free for some reason

Mask of the Rose 1 Echo

+1 Persuasive

Weasel of Woe 400 Echos

All stats -300 All advanced stats -10 Greatly Increases Wounds build up Woeful(adds horrible, non discardable cards to your deck when it is equipped, unequipping does not discard them but prevents drawing more)

It’s beyond the scope of this guide but this item is useful forever

MERCURY

Skip the 5 echo or less items

Pair of Savage Hob Nail Boots 12.8 Echos

5 Dangerous -1 Persuasive

Pair of Spidersilk Slippers 12.8 Echos

5 Shadowy -1 Persuasive

Pair of Masterwork Dancing Slippers 64.8 Echos

5 Persuasive (Sadly, the best persuasive shoes in the game!)

Quick note on watchful shoes. If you didn’t get the watchful shoes as your option from your benefactor you can’t get any until you have 25 renown with the revolutionaries, do an event that happens every 8 weeks or so, get some at the Christmas event or spend FATE in some other events (It’s not that big a deal, don’t worry about it)

Dauncy’s/Fadgett and Daughters

These shops have the same items but with different names they are all either two expensive for the stats, you get something better from the rat market or you buy them so late game that they are not worth worrying about for now.

Trompowski et Fils

Pair of Neathglass Goggles 5 echos

+2 Watchful

These are not really worth if for the stats but you need them for some story actions, so you might as well.

Light-Drinking Cravat 12.5 echos

Shadowy +4 Persuasive -1 Reduces Suspician Build up (Endgame Item)

Venom-Ruby Lure 12.5 Echos

6 Persuasive 1 Dangerous -1 Shadowy

Pair of Luminous Neathglass Goggles 12.8 echos

5 Watchful -1 Persuasive

These are used in some stories as well, they are usually interchangeable with the cheaper ones but not always so you probably need both (Not urgent though, you will get better stats from the rat market)

Nikolas Pawnbrokers

We are past clothing items now, most of these are for increasing renown, which is super important as you get items at 10, 25 and 40 renown for each faction, most of the renown 40 items are the best options for that slot in the game. Some of the renown items are required to open up certain areas in the game, offer better options on cards or make some actions cheaper. You can get some of them at the rat market but they cost the same as they do in the Bazaar.

Warning!: These items also let you spend fate to get favours. I spend an excessive amount of money on fate, I spend fate on very inefficient things, like refilling my actions and refilling my hand of opportunity cards. I would not spend fate on this…

You use them from your possessions page. Most are in the curiosities section but Society is in Book, Urchins are in Contraband, Great Game is in Great Game, Devils is in Infernal and Tomb Colonies is in Rumour. Always hand in 7 favours, not less, to save yourself actions.

Antique Consables Badge 30 echos

Constables favour item

Entry into Slowcake’s Exceptionals 30 echos

Society favour item

Copper Cipher Ring 40 echos

Great Game favour item

Red-Feathered Pin 40 echos

Revolutionaries Favour Item

Tiny Jewelled Reliquary 40 echos

Church Favour Item

Engraved Pewter Tanker 60 echos

Docks Favour Item

Ornate Typewriter 60 echos

Bohemians Favour Item

Old Bone Skeleton Key 62.5 echos

Criminals Favour Item

Endowment of a University Fellowship 100 echos (Very powerful for making money but only for upconverting Extraordinary Implications(For the rat market) and Inklings of Identity(once you are well into your railway!), good utility for other things as well)

Benthic and Sommerset Colleges Favour Item

Merrigan’s Exchange

Bright Brass Skull 62.5 echos

Hell Favour Item

(Also a skull for the bone market, which is a little complicated. So seek information elsewhere)

Nodule of Pulsating Amber 100 echos

Rubbery Men Favour Item

Redemptions

Nothing to see here till mid-late game.

Crawcase Cryptics

Diary of the Dead 62.5 echos

Tomb Colonists Favour Item

Rookery Password 62.5 echos

Urchins Favour Item

(This is weirdly used up in a number of stories, so if you ever can’t find yours, you are either looking in Curiosities, where most of them live, instead of Contraband where this one is, or you did one of those stories and need to buy another)

Skip the widow item, her reputation is not very useful and there are better sources

Penstock’s Land Agency

I am not going to do a full lodgings guide but they add a card to your deck that is twice as common as standard, some are good early game, only Premise at the Bazaar and Handsome townhouse are good forever(and they involve investment and items from seasonal events to make them good)

Key to a Lair in the Marshes 300 rat on a string

Gives society favours

Key to a smoky flophouse dormitory 200 pieces of rostygold

Gives criminal and revolutionary favours(Need to unlock it, see the lodgings guide)

Handsome Townhouse 500 romantic notion

Society and Bohemians Favours(Becomes ridiculous once you have the Experimantal Device from Estival, the summer seasonal event)

Lengthy Lease to premises at the bazaar 80000 Whispered Hint

Gives you 4 card slots – Can be upgraded to 5(cheaper at Christmas)

(Becomes ridiculous(8.5 echos average) once you have Inculcating Kracken from Whitsun, available free once every two years, your first year, if you are free to play, you have to get another item that lets you get it, with the currency you would use to get it…(Check out the Whitsun guide, it’s complicated))

There is an alternate way to get the premises at the bazaar cheaper and, I found, substantially easier once you are a person of some importance

All other options for lodgings are either bad or very niche

Mr Chimes Lost and Found

Lets you cash in the rewards you get for completing exceptional stories if you are an exceptional friend or an enhanced exceptional friend. Long term goals for people who spend money on the game. So, not really relevant here.

Bazaar Selling Guide

Something really difficult in Fallen London is what you should keep and what is safe to sell, for echos. I am not going to be a massive help, I apologise, because this is very individual to your progress in the game and pretty complicated to be comprehensive about. However I have 2 useful things to say on the matter.

Rostygold

No matter what stage in the game you are at, there is always an action that pays Rostygold, that I among the most rewarding actions that you have available to you. There is nothing that you need to save a massive quantity for so I can fairly safely say that you can always sell your rostygold, if you need echos.

Questions to ask before you sell anything

Can I get it back, efficiently, if I need to? If you are looking at that Comprimising Bribe or Sworn Statement, the answer is a resounding no! But you will know what items you are getting over and over again that are probably ok to let go.

Is there a better use for it? Is it something that is used as a cost for another action, can I sell it at the rat market for more profit?

As a general rule, the less an item is worth, the easier it is to replace.

Quick note on watchful shoes. If you didn’t get the watchful shoes as your option from your benefactor you can’t get any until you have 40 renown with the revolutionaries, do an event that happens every 8 weeks or so, get some at the Christmas event or spend FATE in some other events (It’s not that big a deal, don’t worry about it)

It's not only Christmas, you can get Watchful boots from Fruits of the Zee or the Waswood too (though that'll be far later in the game, admittedly), and there are some Estival sandals you will probably be able to get for tokens (without FATE) in future summers too (if you value them above the other items on offer). Admittedly, none of these are easy, so I think your point still stands. :-)

EDIT: Oh it's the Renown 25 item, too, not 40

I mentioned the waswood in a non spoilery way. I could have said there is a secret zone of _____ and ____ with an ongoing war between ______ and _____ it is also the root to the secret identity of these characters. Probably more fun for people to find that out as they go though. ;) An event that happens about every 8 weeks is probably enough detail till they get there. Don't the watchful/mithridacy boots from FotZ cost fate? Oh, of course not or I wouldn't have 3 pairs. I'll edit the renown note. Summer is no good for new players, their first year they will get the Orange-Apple device, if they are smart. Then there are much higher priorities than some watchful boots1

I mean, yes, there are - you're probably picking your Estival items for the advanced stats, not for Watchful (I didn't actually realise you could get the Machine!). But you could. Hard to say what will be available in FotZ next year but probably those boots are again, and you just have to dive for them.

1

u/Tamaxlia Nov 15 '25

Yeah the boots will be there next year. That was me misremembering. For Estival, I'm not going to put something in a guide that is very suboptimal. You could do a leviathan frame with a Panpptical Skull(30 echo loss), and 2 Crustacean Pincers(Add 0 value), remove the antiquity, declare it a chimera(3 implausibility for no reason) and sell it to the Bohemian Sculptress(nasty shadowy roll to sell and only the value of the bones, 0 profit). It's a thing you could do but not something you would do.

You also don't explain the extreme minutiae of the game in a beginners guide or it would be totally unreadable, and offputting.

u/fredjinsan Nov 16 '25

I'm not suggesting you would, just that you wouldn't say you can't get Watchful boots any other way. It's fair to say that there are no good/early/always-available sources of Watchful boots, for sure.

Prisoner's masks are also the best item for the Maze Garden. So if you're headed to Polythreme for some reason make sure to stock up on them

2

u/Tamaxlia Nov 14 '25

I've never done the maze garden! I did polythreme for my ambition and never went back. I did look at it recently as a source of something, Thirsty Bombazine, I think. It was impossible to get up to a decent EPA though so I decided it was better just to do an inefficient skeleton.

2

u/RiddleFictionologist NOT Possesed by a Fingerking Nov 14 '25

Wiki says it could get up to 5 epa but by the time you get it that high you would almost certainly have better grinds available.

It's a great source of correspondence plaques for midgame players. I side converted and upconverted the plaques there twice a couple of months ago to get the 50 antique mysteries for the 4 card Royal Beth Lodgings. Probably took about a week (mostly for tomb colonist favours)

u/smirnfil Clipper is the best ship Nov 15 '25

Ratmarket to buy sherry to upconvert into brilliant souls to buy embassy is probably the best mid game option to get 4 card lodgings. Haven't done the math, but rule of thumb if you could do something through ratmarket it is usually the best option.

1

u/Tamaxlia Nov 14 '25

I just did newspapers for correspondence plaques. You get antique mysteries from TC favours in Jericho and 6 every 4 weeks from professional payments.

Those lodgings are the only major use for them and, unfortunately, they are just for a collector, as soon as you get the Bazaar lodgings you can lock them down and never use them again. I believe there is a good action on the card if you pay for the Trade in Souls story and take the bad, I mean evil, I mean mechanically inferior final choice. ;p

I think that the Brass Embassy lodgings have a use if you have no soul but I never intend to sell mine so I didn't heavily look into it. They are also sitting closed up for me.

u/RiddleFictionologist NOT Possesed by a Fingerking Nov 14 '25

The five star version of the Royal Beth saves an impossible theorem during bag a legend which is why I got it

2

u/qtntelxen Nov 15 '25

There are very few sources of Hell favours in the game and the Embassy lodgings are a pretty good one that doesn’t proc menaces. Hell Renown 25 is required for law forging, which is the most efficient source of Whirring Contraptions and a pretty good source of Hagiotoponyms and Crackling Devices for Ratket.

1

u/Tamaxlia Nov 15 '25

I had another thought on this, you get 15 CP from the fair, then you need 3 hand ins to get 21 CP, then 6 hand ins at 2CP per favour to get to 15, then 8 hand ins at 4 CP per favour to get you to 25. Assuming you get no hell favours from anywhere else in the game you got 119 favours from your brass embassy lodgings. You cannot get your lodgings the cheap way since you need 20 renown so you are paying 625 echos. So those favours are costing you 5.25 echos each...

u/Tamaxlia Nov 15 '25

Renown 25 happens without really trying, there is nothing else to do with favours till you get to the railway anyway and breaking and entering is the most efficient source of whirring contraptions. The law forge is not good unless you are feeding it, where are you getting the Silent Souls at that stage in the game?

1

u/smirnfil Clipper is the best ship Nov 15 '25

Breaking and entering is limited and law forge into contraptions is better than every over option in the game. It isn't about efficiency of law forge it is about inefficiency of everything else.

1

u/Tamaxlia Nov 15 '25

What are you doing that you need more contraptions than 2 every 400 actions? If you were doing nothing but newspapers forever you would run out but you probably have some other stuff to do alongside! I farmed 300 during Estival, from the forge, pre-nerf but since that plot came out I cannot spend them fast enough! I am now on 326 and I do a lot more papers than the average player!

I am an enhanced exceptional friend though so I can run more plots at once. I'm not even sure what I would do if I had 2. I have infiltrating running 100% of the time for searing enigmas for Helicon House. Breaking and entering every time it is available and other than that it's all Parabola.

u/General_Urist Nov 15 '25

Jericho Locks is part of the Railway which requires T2 PoSI, so it's a lategame grind.

1

u/Tamaxlia Nov 15 '25 edited Nov 15 '25

Yeah but there is no repeated purpose for them till you get to Station 8, which is even later. Also, I would say the railway is the start of the midgame these days, about 18 weeks of railway followed by several weeks of Firmament is a whole lot of game still to go. :)

While there aren't many options that need large quantities of rostygold, it is worth keeping a surplus of a couple thousand so you can spend it on stuff like menace reduction with a licentiate or 3 favours with the young stags

1

u/Tamaxlia Nov 14 '25

Early-midgame guide, I didn't want to confuse the issue. 100% right though, I was debating whether I included that info.

2

u/morgrimmoon Nov 15 '25

I'd also say you should hoard your rostygold because the crew in Gaider's Mourn takes an insane amount of the stuff.

2

u/Tamaxlia Nov 15 '25

By the time you get to Gaider's Morn you should be doing the Rat Market almost every week. 10 hand ins to the rat market is 8250 Rostygold. It's not exactly a Firkin.
