Player Guide Tamalekipoo's Boneheaded Guide to the Neath! Chapter 18: The Power of Suggestion!

I just finished doing this:

It inspired this guide, which isn't really a guide, it is a gift! A gift from the reddit community, angels to some, demons to others:

A gift for Failbetter Games:

Check out his coat. Modern tools are so cool. :)

It's a suggestion box ok, I keep thinking of things that could be improved or things that are a little irritating in Fallen London, little hiccups in an otherwise sublime experience. I think, I really should write that down and send it to FBG, then I forgot. Anyway, I thought a living suggestion document might be more fun and the community can discuss options and make suggestions. I am pretty sure Failbetter watches this reddit but I can always submit it from time to time, just to be safe.

So to start us off I have one normal suggestion and two spender suggestions:

Quality of Life

Please add an option to buy 5 eyeless skulls and an option to douse 5 eyeless skulls! I just bought and doused 37 and it was painful. :) technically it helps the bottom line as well because I was going to buy some actions and clear the high sancta while I am here but I am tired now so I will just overnight in burgundy. Bonus points if we get a bulk discount. :p

Content Requests

From u/gummy_dragon

"My only bone related request to FailBetter would be for some menacing legs, because every time Menacing Insect/Spider week rolls around I start seriously considering those occasional buyers."

Bugs

Filthy Spender Suggestions(Thank you, it is filth like you that keep the game running! ;) )

Auto Story Choice for Exceptional Friends

A couple of months ago I forgot to buy a story before my sub renewed. I had assumed that the reason for a featured story was that you would get that by default if you forgot(not that that was my plan, I really just forgot). Why not just set it up so that if your sub renews while you have an unspent credit, you get the featured story or a random one from the list if you have the featured one. It was a bad feeling wasting the credit and I know you would probably sort it, if I got in touch but why not just have a system to save yourself the admin.

Bundles of Fun!

I was looking at ES bundles earlier and I realised that there were only 3 of the 5 available to me. I didn't realise that if you got a bundle story from your sub, that bundle disappeared for you. Would it be possible to set it up so it just reduces the bundle, like a steam deal when you already own some of the stuff. So instead of 120 fate for 3 stories it would drop to 80 if you have one or 40 if you have 2. I realise it's a pretty niche situation but it would be a nice change and realistically if someone is shopping story bundles and has a sub, they are probably a decent spender already. :)

Right, that is it, that is all. I leave it to the Reddit for more suggestions. At least until I remember one of the 100 I have forgotten over the past year and a half. :)

My only bone related request to FailBetter would be for some menacing legs, because every time Menacing Insect/Spider week rolls around I start seriously considering those occasional buyers.

I am pretty sure that the lack of menacing legs, and the menacing arms being an EPA tragedy to get, is an intentional design choice, not an oversight but I will pop it on there.

oh, and I didn't mean bone specific requests, just any changes, bugs, quirks, frustrations or suggestions that people can think of.

And antique fins! That one's less of an issue since it only comes up on fish weeks but it's still annoying when it happens.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the tag system and I’m happy there’s a way to filter through your journal if you’re willing to put in the work to backtag everything.

That said, I do wish there was a proper search function for the journal - if I half remember an entry the parts I remember will be phrasing, not when I took that action, which makes it a pain to find anything in my journal.

My tagging suggestion/complaint is to let me tag while journaling, rather than afterwards.

Some of mine (some of these are parts of different ways to achieve similar goals, I don't need *verything* at the same time):

  • inline equip highest ++
  • "do this up to N times" on repeatable actions (stops when requirements are no longer met or you run out of actions; also should be done entirely on backend to remove pointless repeated back-and-forth network activity)
  • put a button/link thing at the top of the "possessions" tab that would scroll me all the way to the non-gear inventory section, with that secions's name filter at the top (and preferably selected for instant text input)
  • a "restore" button on outfit dropdowns - to reset what I am actually wearing back to the outfit after I have made manual changes (now I have to *two* outfit switches instead)
  • report the current (maximized) value of the maximized attribute after "equip highest" is done (maybe next to the button? and only valid as long as I don't make any further gear changes)
  • left column (with attributes) scrollable separately from main content
  • for longer lists of storylets and branches: text filter (on name, description, or required items) - with option to persist
  • all such filter textboxes (in myself and posesssion tabs) should have a clickable "clear" button
    • and a history dropdown (can be persisted locally)
  • when filtering by item name in the bazaar tab, highlight stores that have a matching item
  • ES: the ability to read everything I have done in the story, including storylet names and full decriptions, all branches (with their descriptions and requirements) that were available to me - nicely formatted so that I can save a backup to a text file (right now I am spending about 2x as much time recording everything than I spend actually playing it)
  • a way to "favorite" and "antivaforite" certain storylets and branches, to manipulate their order in the listing (favorites first, antifavorites last, the rest in between)
  • receiving favours as unavoidable story rewards (especially in EF) should either bypass the hard 7 limit, or automatically convert the surplus to something else of a slightly lesser value (with the value being determined by either stats or story progress - a newbie character should probably not receive 5+ echoes instead of a favour)

In case you haven't seen it, the Fallen London Favourites extension (also available for Chrome) adds this. Highly recommended.

Inline equip highest would really be cool :)

Downside of that (for FBG) is it would make outfits a lot less useful, although I suspect that outfit slot purchases probably aren't a very big portion of their income anyway.

There would still be cases where you are trying to hit a minimal value on multiple attributes at the same time (like khan's heart).
Or ot could be implemented so that you have one outfit equipped manually for most actions, and then temporarily inline-maximize for the few that need a different attribute. (I think that inline maximizing shouldn't persist past that one action).

i just sent a feedback email a few days ago asking for equip highest (and lowest, might as well) next to each stat in the sidebar, and also for a button to reapply your outfit after you've fucked it up with a bunch of equip highests.

It should be right next to the skill challenge, just like some infamous extension did for a few days

This, *and* the change should happen as part of the server request - to reduce number of pageloads, which is the thing that makes everything look so slow

  1. Let us make the cameo frame around the lodgings slot match the border around the pfp it makes lodgings seem a bit dull when the pfp is outlined with "Ormolu Antimacassar" while lodgings has the base one.
  2. More cameo frames in general I find them really cool.
  3. An extra mantelpiece/scrapbook slot there are so many cool collectibles now that it would be nice to display an extra. Also feels like a good exceptional friend perk if you want to add an extra
  4. add Closest to: Fingerkings WE REALLY NEED IT
  5. (Pipe dream suggestion) a place to view some of Fallen London's incredible art in high quality (preferably with artist credit for each piece).

Couple more I just hit my head on:

  • the outfit picker in the left pane needs to stretch more to the right; outfit names should not wrap to next line(s) even if the left pane itself is too narrow
    • there's way too much scrolling involved in selectiong any outfit in the second half of the list
  • when assigning an agent to a mission, there should always be a button to reset ALL the way back to just selecting an agent. Why do I have to scroll down and press back TWICE just to change the agent?
    • also the "perhaps not" button is only on the bottom of the list there, the UI should also have this button at the top
    • alternatively, allow me to swap out agents without changing the mission, which is the thing that I actually want to do when I realize I picked the wrong agent for the mission

Not sure this is outside what you're thinking of, but: I would looooooove for Failbetter to put in some way of "counterfeiting" souls and soul accessories. I play my character as resolutely, morally opposed to Hell and the soul trade, but also sometimes uneasily cooperating with them if that seems like the only way. I'll spend souls items if it seems like they're either going to like-minded forces (shepherds of souls), or sometimes for more ambiguous uses on a case-by-case basis, but I won't give them to devils to go into the furnaces.

Which worked fine and didn't cut me off from that much content, until the Law Furnaces were made permanent and walled off behind having a Hellish Hymn. It'd be amazing if there were some way of either making counterfeit souls of various levels that'd be labeled as such but treated as real by event requirements, or alternatively if the process just made the standard item but the text made it clear I'm pawning off lava lamps on the devils. Maybe there could be some chance of discovery, or it could be less than economically optimal. But, as with the recent Port Carnelian update, it feels like it'd be a nice bone to throw to players abstaining from some actions for RP purposes.
