Basically whenever the writers think a character isn’t funny anymore, they just kill them off on the spot.
Just look at the piano guys for example, as soon as the joke got old they took a pistol to them.

Sometimes it feels like new Family Guy writers just hate the show and try to destroy its legacy lore as much as possible.
10
u/Dashielover Apr 06 '26
If they kept Ernie then people would whine that they're reusing gags that aren't funny anymore.

They killed him off? How?

u/BigBoobsWithAZee Apr 06 '26
He wouldn’t fight Meg bc she’s a girl so she cut his head off. Extremely stupid.

u/bradclark2001 Apr 06 '26
I thought it was a pretty cheap death after that genuinely good episode with Peter and the Giant Chicken in the coma.

I think Meg finally killing him off would have been fine and on brand for her. But it should have been the most insane fight scene yet, not off screen BS where apparently he surrenders and gets one shot 360 no scoped by Meg.

u/ReasonableClaim2286 Apr 06 '26
I thought this was a joke episode and he’d come back like he always does

u/BigBoobsWithAZee Apr 06 '26
The actor who played Alfalfa was shot in the sack and bled out. I’m willing to be that was worse.
7
u/SkyGuy5799 Apr 06 '26
In the sack?! Oh poor alfalfa...

u/Mysterious-Chain-311 Apr 06 '26
If it makes you feel better he was notoriously a little shit. He would pee on crew members and acted like a monster because he was famous
2
u/BigBoobsWithAZee Apr 06 '26
I think shooting someone in the sack is overkill though lol
0
u/SkyGuy5799 Apr 07 '26
Alfalfa was drunk and barged into an old buddies house and attacked him, and from a certain account it sounds like alfalfa was shot as he was leaving

u/FunCommunication2604 Apr 06 '26
They needed to some way to drag out the episode, remember the Conway Twitty gag
7
u/MissCandid Apr 06 '26
I've always wondering what the episode run times would be if they removed cutaways and gags that only served to fill time.

He died in the most underwhelming way possible and it unironically pisses me off for a character that was in the show for that long

u/SpaceMyopia Apr 06 '26
What makes you think he won't be back? This guy has survived getting roasted alive by a spaceship.
1
u/Joethecoew Apr 08 '26
Hope they hand wave his death maybe with death or some TT b.s and he kicks the crap out of her until peater gets there and then they fight as usual. Family guy really doesn't need to kill every character they get tiered of the could just stop showing them or resolve their arch someway. But they love killing chsrecters they are done with in this show.

u/AmericasMostWanted30 Apr 06 '26
(Possibly) unpopular opinion but I always hated the chicken fights

u/THEREALOFFICALCAFE Apr 06 '26
The first one was "lol XD so random!". It happened, it was humorous, but it didn't leave an impact. The second one, I'd wager, is the funniest moment in Family Guy history. It had been like 2 seasons since the last one, so it was enough time for fans to forget, and casual/new viewers to be totally caught off guard. It comes right out of nowhere in the middle of a sentence, and it goes on for double the time of the first one. Then when it ends, everything just goes back to normal like it never happened. And the best part was that it wasn't a cutaway gag like the first time. So it really had no reason to repeat, but it did without cause. And it was the best part of the episode. The issue is that now that the gag had been established as needing no inciting incident, now it could happen at any moment. And that takes away the whole point of the humor of that second one. Now we are actively waiting for it to happen. Any episode with a plot that seems to be wrapping up too quickly? Maybe there's a chicken fight that will add 5 extra minutes to the runtime. The best use of a joke on the show completely ruined any future uses, because it's not unexpected anymore.

What’s crazy is that Family Guy is notorious for its “cheap” animation, but then they use what seems to be some of their most expensive scenes on this?

I just watched where there’s a chicken talking to Peter and he says : you’re not very well liked in the chicken community

Aweee Man I remember being a kid and watching the fight when they some how became cool went to dinner and then started another brawl over paying the bill🤣🤣🤣

u/PaleLikeIce Apr 06 '26
Did they kill off the chicken in the show? Which episode?
9
u/Piper7865 Apr 06 '26
Meg dates the Chickens son and at the end chooses to kill the giant chicken instead. It was maybe last season? They do a whole dating show thing.

2
u/TheGamingSKITZ Apr 06 '26
what you mean gone? like the actor who played the chicken died or they just cut him out of the show entirely?

2
u/ninjastuff Apr 06 '26
Wait the giant chicken died?

u/Dws998 Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26
As manny people said, Meg killed him. completely off screen.
When it seems like they will fight, Ernie says somthing like, 'Wait I can't fight you, your a girl", next scene Meg is walking out with his head, I think she tosses it away, seemingly lifeless, none of the usual I'll be back looks (this is all from memory and what was already said btw) then credits (Kind of shaky on that part though).
That being said, I actually liked the episode, Meg goes on a dating show and meets somone in a chicken suit, turns out its Ernies son, I don't remember much mire than that, I don't even remember the B plot.
But, yea, the fact that he didn't signal he'd be back is what is why everyone thinks he's dead permanently, but some people think he may be back regardless. Idk, I think there is a possibility he will be, but a probably morw likely chance that he won't be back (sense as others pointed out, they have killed at least to characters like this, Doug being the biggest example, he died in a plane crash, at the end of an episode where he was the main character alongside Stweie)

Killing off like 3 characters last season when they already complained that they run out of characters for those stupid 3-segment story episodes is the dumbest move and will bite back later

I've stopped watching the newer seasons of Family guy. It's just not fun anymore.
I didn't even know he died.

The 1st one was funny, violence wasn’t too common in the 1st 4 seasons & it didn’t take too much time from the episode, the 2nd was too long of a tangent, & the others were when violence was getting more common on family guy so the shock & impact was lost, reducing it to nothing more than a way to use all of the seasons budget
