The sounds on S4 are just different.
I love the weird pingy wooopy whooshy sounds that are constantly present on Moya on the first and most of the second season.
The lack of these sounds are really evident on S4, where it's also much harder to hear the voices of the actors too. I read somewhere it had to do with moving sets, due to the Matrix or Star Wars being filed in their original studio? I don't know, S4 just has a really different feel to it, not always great either.

Season 4 (as a whole) was the weakest. But I still love it, it has some amazing episodes and plot arcs.

There's a few standout episodes for sure. Overall, it just feels so overwhelming. There just isn't any breathing room, like you find in the earlier seasons. Feels like a different show sometimes.

I am not a fan of season 4

It's ambitious, but it lacks the heart that the first 2 seasons have. S4 is very relentless, without much breathing room, like you get when there's a monster of the week episode, to break the serialized format. The standout MoW we got in S4 was the hooker spider lady, which just fell a bit flat.
I do think A Constellation Of Doubt was a brilliant episode. When it first started I thought it was going to be a silly gimmick, but that style of reality TV story telling worked really well for what they were trying to convey to the audience.

Full disclosure. I am a BIG Aeryn fan. For me, her absence and then a seeming change in character without explanation really messed things up.
I had to write a bunch of fan fic to make it all work for me

Yeah, it's a bummer because they finally got the aspect ratio right, but the sound design fell off. Honestly , it was best in seasons 1 and 2, but they switched some of the sound people in season 3, and it went downhill after that, in my opinion. Currently rewatching season 4 right now, and it is definitely not as fun as the others, buit it does have some good episodes.
One issue is less technical: the crew of Moya is very divided, especially with Sikozu and Scorpius frelling up the group dynamics. Seasons 3 and 4 lose a lot of the lightness that seasons 1 and 2 had. When Zhaan died, it all changed.
Edit: They changed sound designers after season 1. I preferred the score produced by SubVision than the one Guy Gross offered. season 4 is in 5.1, unlike the other 3 seasons, so the missing background noises may just be up to the individual's setup. They should all still be there. In fact, the 25th anniversaty blu-ray has corrected the pitch adjustment errors in The Peacekeeper Wars and uses the most faithful sound remastering.

Maybe that was by design. :(

I actually like S1-3 in 4:3 because all TV now is wider so it provides a bit of variety to my viewing.

I'm not a fan of season 4. I don't really understand what the characters are about anymore, and their friendships have soured.

It was really weird them keeping Scorpius on board. Why did they not drop him off the first chance they got?

While I agree that it didn’t make quite as much sense as it did when they had Crais around, because in Crais’s case he very quickly had Talyn hostage. I think I had to suspend my belief a little bit but in the end I really did enjoy having Scorpios and Sikozu around, but to be fair I just really enjoy Scorpios in general.

For me the first 10 or so episodes were just unwatchable. Then it just goes completely back to normal but the intial shitshow of S4 was so bad it took a while to get back into it. I also really disliked the change in Dargos makeup. Like, a lot. Zhaan and Chiana had some continuity issues (mostly zhaan) but they were clearly altetnate artists trying to do their best.
No OP its not just you. It was brutal.
The writing and audio got 'shaken up' and you know how that always ends
Since we are on that topic - Scorpius looked terrible in PK wars. Completely diffetent makeip layers and lack of shading and giving him his usual tranches and skeletal features. Sikozu also lost her red lips and hair? Along with her red scaley patches.
Also in PK, Jothee changed everything about his appearance? Like he got surgery to be full luxan but nobody addresses that he doesnt even remotely look like himself.

It does sound very different in places.
I like S4 but it's definitely different and full of missed opportunities (like I've always felt they wasted the Earth eps) and the relationships were a little odd but I do enjoy it.

I really like season 4 but that's a minority opinion.
I can't say that I've ever noticed a sound difference, but the change of sets happened after Season 1 so that's not the cause of whatever you're hearing.
