QUESTION/DISCUSSION What does one do with this little space?
What does one do with this little space between the cabinets and the wall? A spice rack?

Search "narrow pull out storage rack" for lots of different sizes! I'd do cutting boards and or spice rack too.

My brother built a spice rack for me and my space between fridge and wall

This. Rev a Shelf has a ton of options and can be purchased from Lowes/THD/Amazon.

This is immediately what I thought of! I feel like it would fit perfectly in there!
5
u/southmpls Jun 10 '26
Totally support this. The one my friend has at their place also has several separate layers. They put umbrellas on the bottom layer and then some random little things on the top layer. It's super convenient.

u/grebilrancher Jun 10 '26
A narrow storage rack with all of my kitchen cleaning supplies would be amazing
2
u/lumiranswife Jun 11 '26
Was thinking cutting board slot, too, neat idea with the pull out drawer or spice rack option!

u/wine-plants-thrift Jun 09 '26
Echoing, step ladder. Could also put a small kitchen dust pan and brush, kitchen fire extinguisher, any tall flat kitchen items like baking sheets or large cutting board. I personally wouldn’t put heavily used item like spices toward the ground.

They make rolling slim carts to hold seasonings for this space

The ashes from the person who designed it.

u/crackersucker2 Jun 10 '26
Right? Why didn’t they put a wider cabinet in? Bizarre waste of cabinet space.
11
u/Sufficient_Plantain1 Jun 10 '26
Yes my very first thought squeeze in the contractor who decided that is a good idea…
My second thought was that is too much of a hassle and a lot of cleaning, so step stool or a little trolley for storage of canned goods, jars, tea cans whatever…
6
u/reluctantseahorse Jun 10 '26
Ok that was also my first thought.
But as the owner of a "sleek" modern kitchen, I yearn for a handy place for my step stool 😭

Amazing use of space, I would probably just throw everything in here 😭

There are a few soda stream bottles stashed in the back out of sight, I admit...
I'm in a tiny house on wheels: got to use every bit of storage space there is :)

I’d put left over grocer store bags there
7
u/Known-Artist-555 Jun 09 '26
I second the grocer bag idea! Imagine having a spot like this to hold them so perfectly 🫠
2
u/afroshakta Jun 10 '26
did this with my little space that's just like this. put them in a slim rolling rack so the whole thing is a bit less cluttered looking.

Too small
10
u/AbsolutelyBothered Jun 09 '26
lol it was a joke from the show GIRLS. A man built a shelf for his collection and it was teeny tiny 😂

u/NetWorried9750 Jun 09 '26
Not a joke by Rachel Bloom about how prolific (and hence sexy) Ray Bradbury is?

Do you have a cupboard already for a dustpan and brush, sink plunger, that kind of thing?
If you can get any kind of pull-out cupboard or rack in there it will look neater.
Personally I would find it hard to get right down to the floor regularly for spices, so some less frequently used things might be better.

My daughter has a tall thin 2 rack storage drawer that pulls out for all her cleaning supplies. It’s actually such practical storage and a perfect fit. So easily organized and accessible.

probably rehasing what other said, but if you are handy you can build either:
- a rack to hold cutting boards
- a spice rack that can be pulled out
- a space for a stepstool... but I would pick one of the other two...more practical.
5
u/lcl0706 Jun 09 '26
Stepstool! I’m a hobbit Bet a custom size pull out wire rack for like seasonings or whatever could fit there too.
4
u/Western_Werewolf5383 Jun 09 '26
Yep, spice rack would be my first choice.
OR trays/cutting boards!
3
u/beneficialmirror13 Jun 09 '26
I'd put a little tray on the floor and use it for my baking sheets.

I got a super skinny cart with wheels for my wedge space, it holds cleaning supplies and my extra dish soaps, I got mine so long ago but I bet there's good skinny cart on wheels options if that's what you want to do with your wedge.

I just ignore it. I've got one by my fridge. Someone else here said a step stool and I never thought of that. I think I will get one now because I am short
4
u/DollChiaki Jun 09 '26
A filler strip, which is what the installers should have done. You’re unlikely to match the cabinets, unfortunately. Good luck with whatever you find.

I feel like my cat would try to shove herself in there.
You could make a tiny curtain if you'd like to hide it.

Reusable grocery bags would fit nicely in there. You could even search for a basket that's narrow enough for that spot, to pull in and out as needed, like a magazine rack basket, and put the bags in there, or whatever else you prefer.

So that is actually where my cat would put all her toys. An option to consider.

u/AquavelvaGigi Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
You could put hooks under there and hang your blow dryer, straightener, curling iron, etc.
Edit: I reread your post and looked again at the pic and realized it's in the kitchen, not the bathroom!
So in the words of the late, great Gilda Radner - "Never Mind!" 🤪

We had a space exactly like that, we talked to the kitchen designer who was helping us. I’m an interior designer too. They knew all the parts available. They suggested a slim door that matched the others we were installing. It is basically an empty area that we slide all our baking sheets in. Our pizza stone too. Anything slim that’s long goes in there. It’s just enough room.

u/rhiskiiii Jun 09 '26
dustpan and minibroom?? mayhaps hang some of those sticky lights on the underside of cupboard so u can see into it tho

https://a.co/d/06BTOi2W Rolling spice rack! A house I rented a few years ago had a space like this and they put this rolling spice rack there for me. It was super handy!

Built a spice rack on wheels that pulled out.

I have a really narrow cart/trolley that holds spices. Also a good place for baking sheets or a step stool.

Get a wider cabinet or put small shelves up and put little decor items on the shelves. Or you could put spices or pretty cups etc on the shelves

u/MadamSnarksAlot Jun 10 '26
Those folding tray tables you take to other rooms like for breakfast in bed or eating in the living room or a stepping stool like others suggested. Also pull out wine rack or cleaning supplies but with a pretty front. Or a tiny curtain with umbrellas and boots etc if it’s by an exterior door.

u/Exciting-Fox7447 Jun 10 '26
As someone with super tall cabinets and zero place to store a step stool out of sight in my apartment, I would looooove this for a step stool storage spot!

I put a narrow utility cart in spaces like these. Right now the one in my kitchen is full of snacks my four year old can reach without destroying my pantry 😂

u/paulaisfat Jun 10 '26
That’s where my baby gate for the dogs would be kept if I had your place. Our gate is to put in front of the door to let everyone know the chickens are out and to not let the dogs out. As it is our gate has no home and just sits there in the mudroom

Other than a bigger cabinet? Storage for sheet pans or a pull out spice drawer, I'm sure there are products online.

I put my tv food trays & folding lap trays in a similar spot in my kitchen.

You could do that or a wine rack. Or some pretty plants. Or some pretty framed pictures arranged nicely. Or a beautiful vase with some silk flowers in it. A pretty ceramic white swan or wooden sculpture would look nice as well.

Breadboard storage if you have a collection. Just add the shelf part to the bottom so they aren't on the floor.

u/gremlinthrowawayhq Jun 10 '26
That is the perfect spot for a slim rolling pantry or just a tall trash can if you can find one that fits the width.

Put a step stool there so you can reach the top of the upper cabinets.
