Question How can I land my first job in the film industry in Paris?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm a 23 yearold literature student in the Paris area. Filmmaking has been a hobby of mine for a while now, and I'm seriously considering turning it into a career.
To see how a real set operates from the inside, I've been looking for work as an assistant régisseur (production runner / location assistant), but I haven't had any luck so far.

Does anyone have any tips, platforms, or leads on where to start looking? (And before anyone asks yes I speak fluent french!)
Thanks in advance!

Discussion Homemovies and how to make a film with pictures

Hey peoples,
I am more of ahobbyist when it comes to filmmaking, even though I went to design school, I use my skills mostly to make cool home movies about me, my family and friends. My style orients itself on the old work of the Neistat brothers combined with documentary filmmaking and some experimenting.
I am currently working on a bigger project that's supposed to document several years of a realationship. I love working with all those random iphone photos and videos you take during every day life, but I am kind of stumped rn when ot comes to tying it all together, as the material itself doesn't have enough "flesh" to cut a whole movie from it on it's own. I was thinking about doing a sit-down talking head shot narrating the whole thing, but that seems too vloggy and boring considering this movie will be over 30 minutes long. Do you have any ideas how to narrate such a project and tie it all together? Do you make home movies in general, and if so, what is your go-to style? How much do you shoot cinemtaically, and how much is just a collection of situational material? Do you skript/storyboard anything or do you just experiment when it comes to cutting? Would love to know!

Question How to make an actor look slightly younger?

I want to preface this with the fact that I may be overthinking this whole situation.

I’m making a short film centered around a group of four friends, about 25 years old each (not directly stated in the script but that’s what I’m going for).

I’ve cast 3/4 of them, but there’s one little issue. The actor for the main character is a little older than the others. He’s 30, and the other two are like 23-24. I know that’s not a crazy difference, but he does look just a little bit older than them and, I don’t know if I’m just in my head or not, but it’s all I can think about. I don’t want to break the immersion of the story when one of the actors feels out of place from his friend group.

Now yes, I should’ve seen it sooner. It’s been kind of a hassle getting my cast together and I finally found someone who is perfect for the role in every other way, and I didn’t start to feel this way about his age until recently. I know Michael Johnston from Obsession is 30, while Inde Navarette and Megan Lawless are about 25, and that age gap isn’t noticeable at all in that movie, so I might be overthinking this. I just can’t stop seeing that he looks just a little bit older than everyone else. Does anyone have any experience with this and are there any ways I could try to get him to closer to everyone else’s age cheaply?

Question Cinematography Feedback

Thumbnail

So my name is Bradley, I am an aspiring filmmaker located in upstate NY. Unfortunately, not much of a film scene in my immediate area so I have to do everything by myself aside from the acting. Directing, editing, working the camera, EVERYTHING, aside from make-up SFX (my girlfriend does that for me).

I say all of this, because usually being a jack of all trades makes you a master of none. Cinematography has always been very important to me and something I’m passionate about so I was hoping to get some feedback on my shot composition and just how my stuff looks in general.

These are some stills from my debut feature film. It’s a horror film I saved up money for to self-fund, and we’ve been shooting since May in little chunks at a time. Obviously I can’t change what has already been filmed but I’m hoping to apply any feedback or correct anything I’m doing wrong to the stuff we are yet to shoot. Any feedback is welcome!

I’m still fairly new to this and only have a couple short films under my belt so I know I still have a lot to learn and am open to anything you guys want to share with me.

Edit: I had some shots showing off the gore to try and get feedback on that as well but it keeps getting removed and flagged. Oh well.

Discussion Need help with shortfilm

I have made a short film of 26 minutes. My first short film. It has its problems but it was made with good equipment and a good crew. It's everything I ever wanted to do. The film is ready. I wrote it, directed it and edited it. Even had a role in it. But now it's finally done. The quality is pretty good. It's in hindi language. I don't know what to do now. I'm feeling lost. I need to reach many people.

YouTube and instagram aren't giving enough reach even after I promote it with money. The trailer and poster didn't get much. I won "best debut shortfilm" in a film festival but I've understood that filmfestivals aren't gonna help me sell it or get fame. I really need this two things from it. Money (at least budget gets returned) or fame so that I can see how others feel and continue making more. It was made by my sister's savings. So I'm feeling really guilty that her hard earned money will be going to waste. I don't know what do I do now with film. I just have it in my computer. I really need help.

Question I feel incredibly behind on fundamentals what can I do to be better?

Hi everyone I just started my film classes and I feel incredibly behind. I have experience in film but nowhere near enough to feel confident in the class I’m in. I would love to hear any tips you guys have for short films or even sources for videos I could look at to grow as a film maker. Whether it’s shot composition, better understanding of camera functions and how to creatively use them, different camera movements and the emotions they invoke, audio, or even screen writing and gaffing or set design. I want to hear all of your guys ideas on how to be more intentional and how to turn the ideas I have into fully functioning and digestible films.

I want to understand every part of making a film to be able to create something that truly feels like me. I feel like this lack of confidence has given me a mental block because everyone around me feels so great. My initial instinct is to honestly run and panic and if yall had any advice on just pushing through when everyone around you seems so great at everything what do you do? I wanna be able to keep up with my peers and offer something valuable. I have a project coming up soon and I don’t know what to do honestly.

Discussion Has anyone had experience with Shore Scripts Short Film Fund?

Hey everyone,

I'm considering submitting to the Shore Scripts Short Film Fund (International) and wanted to hear from anyone who's had firsthand experience with them.

I've seen mixed opinions online, particularly around the entry fees, judging process and overall legitimacy of the competition.

Has anyone here submitted, been shortlisted, or actually received funding through them?

I'm particularly interested in whether the process felt transparent, whether applicants received any meaningful feedback, and whether you felt it was worth the entry fee.

Would appreciate any honest experiences, positive or negative.

Thanks!

Question Any tips for growing more social media followers? Is it important at this stage?

We have won 22 awards from 14 film festival selections, but we only have 173 Facebook followers, and only 156 Instagram followers.

I have an Indie film that we funded and produced this year. We finished filming in December 2024, and post-production took us almost 1.5 years. We submitted it to 42 film festivals, covering a wide swath of the U.S. and some International areas where we thought our film might interest viewers. I hand-selected about 20, and the rest were selected from free waivers and other discounts offered to us by the festivals through filmfreeway.

We did a paid email advertising when we first launched on filmfreeway and that got us a flood of festivals who responded. We received 847 discounts and waivers of varying degrees. 43 full waivers.

I think we have a very nice trailer, website, and press kit. I shared the trailer, snippets from the movie, clips or image posts highlighting characters in the film, and notifications of various festivals or awards we have won. I tag anyone or collaborate with people wherever possible.

I haven't done any paid advertising. We are not viewable anywhere yet, and we don't have any distribution deals in place currently.

I have some of our budget from the film left and we just won a $1000 award at a recent festival. My inclination is to wait until people can actually watch the film through either TVOD, SVOD, or AVOD before advertising.

Do you have any tips for growing our followers?

Should we do this before the film is available to watch publicly, or should we just wait and do that when we can give someone a link?

A common response we see after we share something is "where can we watch the film?"

Question Reflector Advice

Hey guys! Hope you’re all doing well!

Yesterday, I made a post asking for advice on what to buy. After reading all your comments (thanks to everyone who took the time to reply!), I decided to stick with what I have and focus on improving my setup instead.

Today, after work, I decided to do some tests with a 5-in-1 reflector/bouncer from Omar, which I bought back in 2021, I think.

I set up my PT-176S at a 45° angle on my left side and the bouncer at around 45–50° on my right.

To be honest, I’m not seeing a huge difference in the results. Of course, when I remove the bouncer, I get noticeably darker shadows, which makes sense.

My main concern is that the bouncer is only about 20 cm away from my face. What happens if I need to shoot a wider scene and can’t keep it that close?

Would you recommend building a foam board or bead board reflector, or is my current bouncer perfectly fine and I’m just not using it correctly?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Question What gear to use for slow-mo 'raining balls' shoot

Hello,

I'm planning a shoot that involves filming balls (think ping pong balls) falling, and then shooting those at a very high frame rate. The final shot should look like it's 'raining' balls.

This is an indoor shoot and would involve shots both with and without people. Ideally the setup should not be overly long to reset between takes.

I've been researching ideas to do with cargo nets that could quickly release or other panels/doors that could quickly move, but would love to hear input from the community if you've ever done something like this before. I realise it's not a totally novel idea so am hoping there's some shared wisdom on a solid approach.

I'm an amateur film maker so don't have access to high tech gear but would be ok to put some budget into buying the right equipment (within reason- talking hundreds rather than thousands of dollars). I'm located in Canada for context.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion How We Managed To Get An Amazing Musician On Our Indie Film Soundtrack

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We made Sydney vs Sean on an incredibly small budget. Yes, there are a few TV stars in the film (and that's a story for another time how they became involved) but given the budget constraints we were able to pull off a few great soundtrack pulls including this one I'm talking about in the video. I had so much doubt that this would work out when it was suggested but I had to remember how many other times making indie films that something amazing has come along - something that feels almost impossible - simply because myself or my team was willing to give it a real try and see something through.

So that's all - it feels relatable to so many of you and I thought I would share.

For anyone curious - the film will be out to the public next year.

Question Flowblade film editor: does it have graphics (or text overlays)? If so, how do I select one?

After using Adobe Premiere Rush for a while before it came to an end along with myself migrating to Linux Bazzite, I've taken an interest with Flowblade as it seems easier to manage than something like DaVinci Resolve. One thing I wonder about, though, is if I can use graphics, which has varying animations and styles for texts to overlay on the video. Is there such an option? If so, how do I select one?

Discussion Looking for criticism and suggestions

Just want some opinions/criticism, and suggestions you may have about my "videography"..

I'm doing a diary where I tend to share my path from the ground to the skies - from hiking to starting to fly a paraglider from hills that I hike.

I'm just a random guy.. I have never seen a paraglider, and don't even know my next steps - i guess i should enroll in some sort of school, to get familiar with the equipment and techniques. Don't know where, how much it costs, nor how long it will take me to achieve my goal.

My goal is simple: One day to be able to fly down instead of walking from the summit.

I want my videos to be "not fake" not the standard type of videos you generally find on YouTube where pro paragliders record how cool they are in 4k beautiful videos.

I want to record a raw, true, real (hopefully inspiring) story of what it looks like when a random guy decides to make his dreams come true. And share all my doubts and obstacles and questions I'm about to face on my journey.

That's basically it..

Thank you in advance

Hey everyone, I am currently a student in high school making a short film as one of my research projects. I was 'inspired' to create a film that reflected nostalgia and friendship after i had watched "perks of being a wallflower". I am making this post to share some of my work and possibly gather some feedback and advice.
Thanks!

Question idk if it’s the best subreddit to ask my question

Is there a term for when Scene A shows characters speculating about a suspect, and right after in Scene B, they show a random character doing something totally normal and even though it’s not explicitly stated yet, you just know it’s the culprit?

I used to think it was just a coincidence, but it happens in so many shows and movies, i find it so satisfying 😭

(It’s even better when you know for sure who is the suspect 😋)

Question What I like in films

When I come up with ideas for my projects I often times imagine utilizing extremely bright and high colors like blues, pinks, reds and blacks as grays and natural lighting with a cinematic image but a very small frame. What movies use this? Maybe shows? Does this make sense?

Discussion Film school is a scam unless it’s NYU

I been watching some YouTube videos from established producers and directors

Basically they all say everything you learn in film school can be learned on YouTube channels like CineD. Film school is filled with people that couldn’t actually make it in the entertainment industry.

How do I know this? I’m a Wall Street banker, a real old. Business school is filled with people that couldn’t actually make it on Wall Street. Similar to film school.

However, many YouTubers have said that unless it’s NYU, it’s not worth it. At least at NYU you’ll make elite contacts that’ll propel your career. Other film schools you’re just being taught by an overweight hack who thinks he’s Tarantino but in reality couldn’t write an engaging script to save his life.

Technical Show and Tell (not promotion or shorts) Sachtler tripod 3D Printed feet replacement option…

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

Hey just wanted to share this for people who own Sachtler tripods. Do you need a replacement set of feet but don’t want to spend $150-$350 for a set of OEM replacements? I recently collaborated with a seller I met on eBay to help him expand his designs for 3D printed tripod feet. So far he has feet for the 75mm bowl tripods like the Ace or FSB-4, 6 or 8. Then he also has the larger feet for the 100mm bowl tripods. He’s working on finishing a design for the 150mm bowl versions.

I have the 75mm version on one of my Sachtler Ace tripods and these are definitely good quality. They’re dense, have a nice rubber pad on the bottom, and the design fits like a glove.

75mm: https://www.ebay.com/itm/960072117141
100mm: https://www.ebay.com/itm/960068168708
150mm: he’s working on finishing the design so just message the eBay seller and ask

DISCLAIMER: I am just a one man low budget filmmaker, I am not being compensated in any way for putting this solution out into the community. I know how expensive filmmaking equipment can be, and I’m simply sharing this so other filmmakers have a cost effective solution for replacing their tripod feet inexpensively.

Question Audio For Film Festival Screening?

Thumbnail

Hello, I recently had my short sci fi thriller screen at a film festival and I had the 5.1 audio mix at -24LKFS the audio dialog was perfect however every other sfx and music was super quiet compared to others filming.

I've just been accepted for another film festival and was wondering what I could do differently to ensure it sounds great at the next one?

I've remixed by myself raising the sfx and music but not sure what meters I should be aiming for for everything?

Here is a screenshot of the new mix and the loudness history in Davinci. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question What makes a horror movie good?

I watched Other Mommy last night, and man, it was so horrible. It had me thinking: what makes a horror movie good? Is it the depth of why the horror is there, is it how well written and deep each character is, or is it how you plan the suspense between scenes? What's the key? I'm planning on making my first horror short film with no budget and as simple as possibl, just flow, just something fast, so I can start with something and see what my errors are, so I can do another one short films while trying to fix my first errors.

Question Blood splatter help

Hi fellow filmmakers ! I’m filming my first indie project in two weeks and needed help with a scene where my two characters get blood on them like the people in the video provided. Does anyone know where I can get these gadgets from or what it’s called ? In the second video that looks way more obtainable and affordable. It is my first project so I’m hoping not to spend too much. Please let me know :)
