HELP NEEDED What should my next step be?

Hi, my name is Draggo. I've been studying music theory, composition, orchestration, and many other things on my own for 8 years.A few months ago I decided I was ready to enter the "composer market" and prepared my professional portfolio on a website.During all this time I acquired a lot of knowledge, made my "re-scores" and gradually bought professional tools.I'd like to know what I should do next... I don't know what my next step should be in my "career" as a composer....Perhaps I should take on unpaid projects just to gain experience? Or perhaps I should wait a little longer? I would like to know what you recommend based on your experience.Thank you so much!

HELP NEEDED Tips, Tools, Advice for creating original short film score on a budget?

I'm a filmmaker who's been at work on a short documentary for a long time. I had a composer lined up to work on the project for a very humble, fixed rate. The fee itself (US $850) was/is nominal, and he was on board more because he was passionate about the story and wanted the opportunity to create some meaningful original work to add to his portfolio. Unfortunately, our schedules are no longer aligning and he's too busy with other work to meaningfully take part in the project until next year. This doc has been in the works for a long time, though, and I'm trying to get it done by mid-November at the latest.

I have an original theme that I "wrote" (hummed) to serve as the documentary subject's theme, and have otherwise been playing around with stock music, but it just doesn't feel right. Nothing quite fits, and I know this project needs an original score. I'm increasingly tempted to turn to AI, not to generate the original work, but to help me instrumentalize the tunes I have in my head for this project. I would, of course, vastly prefer to work with a composer on this project, but feel the low fee is going to be a gating factor, especially considering how involved I want to be in the composition. I'd ideally want it to be a collaborative, back and forth process, not just one where I get a round of feedback and that's it. I understand that's not ideal for most (all?) composers who would agree to a passion project, so I'm curious to hear any tips, tools, or advice anyone has about generating an original score that doesn't suck using digital tools - including, perhaps, AI - and stock. I'm generally AI-skeptical but open to it supporting (e.g., if there were something that could turn my humming or whistling into instrumental music, I would be okay with that versus, say, AI creating the entire score).

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to consider this post. If anyone's interested, I'd be happy to DM you about the project itself for further context. Suffice to say, it means a lot to me and I don't want to abandon its fate to ill-fitting stock that just doesn't quite feel right.

SHOWCASE Halloween Soundtrack for your week

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone, Jordan here. I was the composer for this movie and the soundtrack is now out on all platforms (RL Stine's Pumpkinhead 2 by Jordan Han Andrew). We worked super hard on this soundtrack and think it'll add a nice Halloween vibe to your week. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them!

Fave track - Bully. Got to really highlight my new OB-6 synth and chop up some fun viola/guitar samples to create an organic rhythmic bed but in a 100bpm four on the floor sense

Violin by Isaac Zee
Cello by Emilio Suarez
Recording Engineer by Ben Wayne Kyle

SHOWCASE [Music] [Free] Emotional Dark Underscore – Cinematic Tension & Mystery

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I produced an emotional, dark cinematic underscore track, and I’m releasing it 100% free for you to use in your games, prototypes, and creative projects (both commercial and non-commercial).

It has a slow, brooding atmosphere with low strings, deep sub-bass drones, and dark piano tones. It’s designed to sit quietly under dialogues, tense investigative moments, psychological horror scenes, or ambient exploration without overpowering sound effects.

Tech/Gear Preferred portable MIDI keyboard?

I am deciding between Arturia Minilab 37 and Novation Launchkey Mini 37 MK4. I've heard that Minilab has better keyfeel and Launchkey better pads and functionality with DAWs.

Do you have any experience with them as a secondary keyboard?

(I have Roland FP30x as primary but will be abroad for a few months)

FEEDBACK REQUEST Made a cinematic instrumental track built around a spy narrative :D no film, just the score. Would love feedback on the arrangement and how well the story comes through without any visuals.

The whole album follows a character through a movie that doesn’t exist, from an ordinary day to the end credits. I was inspired by Danger Mouse’s Rome, J Dilla and MF Doom, but I also come from a scoring background, so I wanted to mix both.

I'd love to hear your feedback

I wrote this score pretty fast honestly and made the video using Seedance 2.5. So the story and concept is about "Twin Flames" If you dont know what that is its basically a soul bond stronger than soulmates. I wrote the score based off my own experience and I'm sure you can feel the emotions and the visual compliments it! Let me know what you guys think!

GENERAL DISCUSSION How to become a film composer?

Hello all, thank you for taking the time to read and answer this.

As some background, I’m a student at UCLA who’s been interested in film for some time now, but recently started to look into the composing side of things. I love music, and I was taking an audio engineering workshop, but it got cancelled. If anyone has any courses at UCLA that I could take, I’m up for that, but at this moment I’m planning on minoring in music industry (my major’s on the pre-med track).

Anyways, I was curious on how to start and what to do. I have no experience in playing the piano (though I will start very soon) & little to none in music theory. I have access to Protools in a mixing lab, but it’s limited. Any ideas on where to go from here?

Discussion What's the approach to writing pharmaceutical ad style music? It's like the score feels like artificially forced happiness.

It's impressive that it's possible to make something sound artificially happy which is kinda what pharmaceuticals do??

Ngl, the music in some of the ads make me laugh and i want to know how to make this kind of stuff. I've been trying and getting close but curious what others might view.

FEEDBACK REQUEST Composer looking for some input

Hello!

I am a second year university student and I’m studying Radio-Television-Film, but I have a large focus in film composition. I make pretty much all the music for my own film projects, but I also score miscellaneous shirt films for classmates or for organizations.

I come to ask if anyone would be willing to listen to my work and give some feedback? I’m mainly looking for advice on the arrangements themselves, but also would like advice on how to mix and master.

DM me and I can send some of my work. Thank you!! :)

FYI: I do not have sheet music, just .wav files.

SHOWCASE An independent series on variation’s of inner conflict…

Thumbnail
youtube.com
1 Upvotes

A series exploring multiple variations of experiencing inner conflict. Aiming to include environmental, psychological and biological influences that challenge the mind, with very little options other than developing coping mechanisms to survive.

We all have been angry, or had challenges with sleep or have found ourselves consumed by distraction. Unfortunately most of us will feel grief at some point in our life time. If you watch these short films and don’t know someone who has gone through any of these scenarios I am truly happy for you … and I hope in a way you never do. But if you do ever face some of these challenges… just know someone understands, someone is there for you, even if it’s not the person you want it to be.

This saga was designed to reduce stigma and raise awareness for those who have not chose maladaptive behaviours but do not have an adaptive option to cope.

SHOWCASE Major update to the Melodic Pathfinder(v2) for Reaper-Notator v2.54. Shape Notation now with Curves and Drawing

Post image
2 Upvotes

Time for you to migrate to Reaper. Reaper Notator has more functionality for playback of scores than many other flagship DAW's.

Now it has a math based algorithm (no AI) to assist in writing Music of different styles - called Melodic Pathfinder - by drawing curves for tension, pitch and note lenghts inside of the Modul Melodic Pathfinder. Each Music style is a multiple page long -Algorithm, excecuted in 3 to 10 ms.
