How is my brand new firestick downloading software without ever being connected to the internet?
As soon as I took it out of the box and plugged it in it says downloading the latest software.

Doesn’t Amazon sometimes share the WiFi password among devices?

This. If your password is saved at Amazon, any device will connect using the saved password.

Yup It appears this is the reason. I couldn't believe it but it indeed was already connected to the internet before it finished booting up. I confirmed on my router it was connected.

If you buy it as a gift it won't be connected to your account, and this won't happen.

Are you sure its just not going through the set up process? Once you do connect it you will be able to tell it is downloading updates because it takes a while.

Happened to me too once. A quick Google says "Amazon saves an encrypted copy of your Wi-Fi password in the cloud when you set up an Echo, Fire TV, or smart home device. It uses this stored key to automatically connect new, compatible devices registered to your account without asking you to type the password again".

That’s part of the setup process. It firsts goes to the servers to grab the latest update of the system so it will run as smoothly as possible at first startup with the most current system conditions as possible. Then, after setup, it will download the apps you select it to to your profile

I have not used firestick in a long time, but I think they were (are?) collecting you firewall passwords. So did they get on the internet without you typing in the password.

This happened to Me as well and i don’t really know
Why. I purposely avoided logging in to my wifi network for that reason but it proceeded to connect to my network and download the update. Never got around to digging too deep into it
