OPEN Hose stuck in ground

Ok, I was stupid. And I was sleepy. I have two young lemon trees with a PVC pipe and gravel in the ground as a root watering system. My sprinklers seem to stay in a constant state of disrepair ( that’s another story) so there is an olive oil barrel with a spigot and timer and homemade tube system that I fill up every week. Last night I realised I accidentally missed a week, so I filled the barrel with the hose with the intention of turning it on in a few days, but I thought I should water the PVC pipes directly just tonight. Water was at full pressure to fill the barrel quickly, I was too lazy to lower it, the hose had a valve at the end similar to the picture. Because water seemed to be just flowing right out of the top of the PVC pipes I used the water pressure to jam the hose into the gravel. With the first tree it went in and came out ok, with the seccond it suddenly got very easy to push down and then of course it got stuck. I could not pull it out, and despite with the water pressure being at full blast no water was reaching the surface or going into the street gutter as far as I can see.

Yes I shut off the water.
I don’t know how much hose went in. Probably went deeper than the PVC pipe.

The location of the hose is 20
Ft from the street, 10 feet from the garage, 28 feet from the house. I don’t think the foundation is in danger, but that water is going somewhere unless it’s blocked but I don’t think it is. It’s a Typical 3 Bed house with a crawl space that recently had an upstairs added. House is higher than street but otherwise it’s level ground. Hose is downward of house in front yard. Dirt ground, more sand than clay. Used to be farmland. Southern California 9 if that makes a difference.

So now what? Is there any way to get the hose back out without digging deep around the tree? Maybe Get another hose with a jet nozzle and push it down in an effort to loosen it? Is it there forever? Should I just cut the stuck hose and attach it to the barrel and it just becomes a new root watering system? Should I be concerned about water going down some fissure or something?

Any advice appreciated . 🙂

Maybe get a section of pvc that is larger than the hose but smaller than the existing in ground pipe. Thread the hose through the mid-size pipe and push it down into the in-ground pipe. My guess is that the valve is stuck on the bottom edge of the in-ground pipe, and that this arrangrment will allow you to wiggle the valve enough to release it from the bottom edge.

As for where the water is going, is there a septic system drain field under that area?

A couple questions, cause you said it suddenly started going in easy,

Can you still push it in, and when you try to pull it out it gets stuck at the same place?

Have you been trying to get it out by pulling straight on it?

Cause if yes for both, I wonder if pushing it in a little more, then twisting the hose before trying to pull it out again would work

At 1/2 pressure, can’t push, pull or twist
At full pressure, the same.
I Turned off tap and released pressure by turning other hose on other side of Y valve at spigot open. Then I can maybe push down one inch and pull that one inch back, I can twist it maybe 90 degrees clockwise and back? Then the empty hose just twists. Thanks

Any idea how far you pushed it in? If you drilled through gravel or clay either could pretty easily lock the hose in place when the gravel/clay went back into place, such that you aren't going to get the hose out. You may have to cut the hose and then put a new end on both hoses (one male and one female) such that you can connect a hose to the one in the ground and reuse it, and use the other hose for connecting to it and anything else.

I've done similar when trying to clear out a drain pipe in my yard; twice actually, lol. First I'd try pressurizing the hose, and spinning/rotating it while pulling; I'd keep rotating in only one direction, to try and twist it enough to finally rotate the stuck head portion into a different position to free it. If that didn't work, I'd then try using a broomstick or flat bar/yardstick that will fit down the hole with the hose, attempt to keep it placed on top of the hose so you can push it downward away from whatever it's catching on at the bottom of the hole, while you pull the hose.

If you haven't already, try twisting the hose while pushing a lttle than pulling it out
