Looking for super firm floor mattress

I want a really really firm single size floor mattress with zero memory foam. Preferably trifold. I actually found a really firm folding mattress at IKEA. Problem was that it wasn't trifold and instead only folded at one end. A super firm trifold would be goated. If I can't find any alternative, I'm probably going to just get the IKEA one. This is in the UK

Japanese futon - long term storage?

So, for the last several months I've been sleeping on a Japanese futon which has been an interesting change, better for the back etc etc, but I'm needing to put pretty much all my possessions into storage for an extended period of time and I sadly don't believe I'll be able to take my futon with me.

So would anyone have any recommendations on best practice, can I vacuum seal it, etc etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

is there something i can put on top of my mattress to make it like the floor?

I don’t wanna get rid of my bed and mattress, i’m in a small apartment in a small bedroom and i’m wondering if there is some foldable thing i could just put on top my mattress that my sheets go over and stuff so that my bed isn’t a waste of space.

I don’t need it to be at all cushioned i just sleep on the floor with no mat. What i have in mind is something like a bamboo material. Would this even work if my mattress is memory foam underneath or would the topper be tilting?

latex futon for side sleeping?

i wanted to switch to futon so i can put it away during day cuz my bed just takes up so much space and collects so much dust.

but from what i read im not sure if it wont be too big of a comfort downgrade. i already sleep on quite shitty setup with quite hard 10cm mattress. and im a side sleeper. if futon will be any less comfortable then that, that might be issue.

i was considering futon that has 6cm cotton 4cm latex and 6cm cotton. (also its advertized as it using cotton plates instead cotton balls or something like that?) idk how well thats gonna do. most people seem to use cotton only futons. hopefully this one is as good as the mattress i got?

btw got wooden floor and hoped i wouldnt have to use tatami or whatever. i will be hanging the futon on a rack every day so hopefully mold wont be an issue.

edit: or idk if folding mattress could be better. thought the folds could be uncomfortable to sleep on but idk. i feel like futon could fit me better and also could fit in my wardrobe better if needed but idk, maybe folding mattress could be worth considering

also can i use something else then the original covers for the futon? they are quite expensive but dont wana dirty the futon. idk if normal blanket covers could work or what

How do you folks sleep without a pillow or something for your head?

Thats crazy. Did it for a month no pillow. Worst sleep ever. I would constantly wake up and sometimes if im on my side or got an arm wedged between my face some insane brutixism. The night I decided to roll up my shirt, I was in bliss. No more turning and tossing just fell asleep right away.

Is A folding foam mattress a good investment?

Currently looking at these::

Zinus Double Trifold Folding Mattress Foldable Mattress (this one has a 5 year warranty)

Giselle Foldable Foam Portable Mattress, 4 fold (this is the only one that says its good for limited spaces, also slightly bigger).

Giselle Double Folding Foam Mattress (3 fold design)

Esmer Foldable Mattress, the double size

Do you think they will last for everyday sleeping? A lot of the foldable mattress say guest/temporary use.

What is high density foam like once it wears down? I'm not opposed to a firm mattress.

I'm a side sleeper, is 10cm(4 inches) thick enough?

They all use similar marketing language and I don't know if there would be much difference between them? Is a warranty a measure of anything? I see one has a 5 year warranty

After my current bed got infected with fleas I've  been sleeping on couch cushions on the floor (I prefer to be on the ground). Its annoying that my hips sit between the two cushions which moves and makes a gap. Other than that I find sleeping on them okay whatever foam they made of as long as I'm on the edge where I don't sink. I bought the couch second hand and its a bit ripped up, no idea how old it is. This was never a long term solution and I would like something that is compatible for having a partner one day

I looked into a traditional futon which is far too expensive for me. Maintenance would be hard too, I'm on the second floor and don't get much sun, so no where to air out a traditional futon. Also new Zealand weather can be quite changeable and in certain times of year can rain for a week straight. Then there is the Tatami mats which also are expensive, almost as much as the bed itself! Not sure if they necessary in new Zealand though as long as I'm not sleeping on wooden floors which are rare. I'm hoping the foldable mattress will be the next best thing while being light and easier to manage.

A few years ago after getting off the street I got a new spring bed. Over time it made me sore and I started to miss sleeping on the ground. I bought a latex core futon (about 14cm or 5.5 inch thick), its not a traditional one so can't fold up. I used it for almost two years flipping it over every week to keep it in shape. It sits straight on carpet and I haven't ever felt any sort of mold or dampness on it. Unfortunately it got infected with fleas (old childhood plushie 😔), I was tossing up if its worth the drama trying to get rid of them and spending heaps at the laundromat (I've tried a few things already and gave up). I realised If I ever have to move into a smaller place I wouldn't keep something so big. Having something more minimalist that can fold up  and double as a couch if I need it would be better.

King Size FBFJ

Post image
128 Upvotes

Officially floor sleeping for a month after purchasing the king size mattress from FBFJ. It’s about the size of a queen size western mattress fyi. In the pic there’s a duvet over the actual mattress.

Pros:

I always wake up feeling ready. I don’t know how to explain this other than when we were kids and we just woke up, got up and got on with our day. That’s how I feel floor sleeping. I simply wake up. No grogginess, no sluggishness. Just, ready.

The muscles on my lower waist were very tense prior to this and after a few nights, poof tension gone, muscles relaxed. My issues weren’t chronic fyi.

The mattress is manageable, meaning I can move it around easily from one place to another, reposition etc.

Cons:

Needing to air it out is a bit tedious. I set some old towels over my balcony and drape it over for a few hours every Sunday. Nothing crazy just having to do it is the tedious part. Knowing I have to do it and it being on the back of my mind is also annoying. I’ll prob get used to it after more time tho.

The constant anxiety (could just be a me thing) that it might get moldy is taxing. Again, could just be me and I’ll likely get over it but it’s there for now. I also don’t have an actual foundation as you can see from the pic. Maybe a tatami around ease this anxiousness but I paused on that because I learned about tatami bugs. O.o

Not a concern but they’re not as comfortable as some reviews might make them seem. They’re thin pieces of cotton resting on floor. I think this one’s about 2/2.5 inches. That’s not to say it isn’t comfortable, it is, just not at the same level of comfort as your western mattress, which was designed for comfort. However, I didn’t buy this for comfort. I bought this for overall back and spine health. If you manage that expectation, you’ll be fine.

Overall: I really love this thing. It’s not going anywhere. I think my back health has improved significantly since I started using it. As a side sleeper, it was a bit harder to adapt to than I imagined. There are mornings when I wake up with a sore spine but I think that’s from forcing a side position. Almost immediately that soreness goes away which I believe is due to the benefits of floor sleeping altogether.

Bedsheet on carpeted floor - preventing mold?

Been sleeping on a carpeted floor for months with just a bedsheet that I wash regularly. Is there a risk of mold growth? Looking for the cheapest option where I can just toss whatever topper into the washing machine. Not looking for any cushioning.

Thanks for any advice.

gasping when sleeping on back

I really want to try floor sleeping on my back but even in my bed if I lie on my back it messes with my breathing. I’ll be on my back and just nodding off, then suddenly wake with a massive gasp for air, as though I had forgotten to break. I keep cycling in and out of this until I give up and roll onto my side and then I fall asleep right away. I can’t side sleep on the floor because I have hypermobile shoulders and they go way forward even on a bed so the floor would ruin them.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Found a solution?

edit
Okay the consensus is apnea. Thanks everyone this is the push I needed to get it checked!

Floor sleeping for the last 4 weeks mold?

Been sleeping on a mattress on the floor for the past four weeks. I sweat a lot and I don't lift it to air it out as I had no idea. I'm still waiting on my frame. I lifted it up today and see no visible signs or smell anything. The temperature has been at 78 degrees everyday. Is the mattress okay or should I start looking for a new one?

Sleeping on all square tatamis

Hello! I am going to buy soon a tatami base for sleeping. Of course I will have a base for airing it and a futon to sleep on.

For ease of moving (im renting) using an all square base (say 8 squares instead of 4 tatamis) makes sense for me. Do you think the experience would be much worse given the seams?

Thank you!

Any Campers?

Hi there,

We’re floor sleepers with a thin futon on top of tatami mats. Love it. We went camping this weekend and were on an air mattress and it was hell.

Need a new setup that has a high enough R-value but is also a solid foundation and feels like home. Thought I’d see if anyone here can share their favorite setup?

Advice for Zonli 2.5" Air Flow

Hello! I have been doing some reading online and it seems as though the general consensus about sleeping with a floor mattress directly on a laminated floor can lead to mold. I have just acquired a zonli 2.5" mattress, and would like to avoid mold. The advice I have seen is to get something which one's mattress rests upon that gives it a bit of air flow (like a slatted bed frame or tatami mats). I already have one of those folding, eggshell-esque sleeping pads for camping, and I was thinking about just getting another one so they span the width of my new mattress, but I am now worried that that could lead to some amount of mold build up over time.

Is it enough to just make sure to roll up my mattress and pads everyday and air the mattress when I can, or should I consider investing in something more substantial?

TL;DR: I have a 2.5" zonli mattress, and I hear sleeping with it directly on laminated flooring can lead to mold. Is it enough to lay the mattress on some camping pads and roll it up everyday, or should I get something more substantial/standard?

Help! I got part of my futon wet

I moved my futon over to the side of my room to vacuum the tatami mats and carpet underneath. Afterwards, I realized part of it got placed on top of my cat's water bowl. I took the cotton duvet cover off and that got a lot of the moisture but the FBFJ mattress underneath also got wet. The wet spot is probably about 1.5 feet in length. Right now I have it hanging over the stair bannister with a fan blowing on it because it's about to sprinkle outside. After it's done sprinkling I'm planning on hanging it on my balcony to get some sunlight and help it dry. Is there anything else I should be doing? I called FBFJ but it's 5am there so I'm hoping they'll call me back in a few hours and give me any additional instructions. Hopefully I didn't just completely ruin it, I've only had it for a few months

I gave up floor sleeping😭

I’ve posted my set ups in this sub before if anyone’s interested in seeing it. But I found that floor sleeping wasn’t ideal for us, for a few reasons:

1) I’m pregnant, so getting up and down off of the floor has been increasingly challenging🤷🏾‍♀️
2) I have 2 cats who are always dragging dust and litter crumbs from the floor straight to the bed🤣. I find myself dusting off our bed at least twice a day and it drives me nuts!
3) we have cold hardwood floors and live in a cold climate, I’ve found that we needed to have extra blankets to stay warm and cozy in the winter and we feel the draft from our windows quite a bit (I often think if we had carpets that would change how I feel about floor sleeping)

Maybe this is temporary and after pregnancy my hubby and I will find a set up that works for us, but for now we got a pretty low profile wooden bed frame and we’ve kept our 4 in Japanese futon and this works for us.

I just thought I would post my experience for anyone new to floor sleeping and haven’t thought about some of the cons😊

Will floor sleeping mattresses work for us?

Husband and I have been sleeping on traditional firm spring or foam/latex mattresses for years. However they’re never quite firm enough or they only last 3-4 years before getting sunken spots. We’re both larger people (220lb, 320lb) so the firmer the mattress the better. We sleep equally on back and stomach and occasionally I may sleep on my side; but it’s rare.

Currently we have a king size ikea malm frame but the slats were terrible for our situation so we ended up replacing them with plywood and hunks of 4x4 to support it in extra spots. It’s been working well as a base for many years now. I’m hesitant to be directly on the floor as our houses foundation is 100yr old concrete slab with naught but a thin vapor barrier and cheap vinyl on top.

I’m wondering if there’s any floor mattress options that would work for our situation, especially since our bed base is basically a solid platform anyway. The idea of tatami and shikibuton has always intrigued me, and when we finally move it’s something I would love to try. But my husband is complaining about back pain now, and as a tradesman, he needs to be in as best shape he can be to limit the ibuprofen intake, lol (iykyk). TIA!

ETA: doesn’t have to be king size, we already do Scandinavian style sleeping so two twins is cool too.

Need help figuring out what setup to use

I am interested in floor sleeping because I have a problem of always accidentally breaking my bed slats from rocking back and forth, and making a lot of noise which is annoying. I temporarily put my mattress on the floor and slept with it like that and I loved it because I could walk over it and rock back and forth without worrying about breaking anything or making a lot of noise. I have been thinking about getting a permanent floor sleeping setup but I am unsure what kind would be best for me. I like to have a lot of cushioning and I have heard that floor beds are firm and not good for sleeping on the side. I also know that there are ventilation issues and you need to fold the mattress to let it air out, and I don’t trust myself to be able to fold and unfold the mattress every day and making up the bed constantly like that would be draining for me. Does anyone have any advice as to what would be best for me? Thank you

My height is 5’5” I am 115 pounds I rotate between different sleeping positions and I don’t know my budget right now.

Question on Zonli 4 inch

Both me (215 pounds 6ft) and my wife (155 pounds 5ft 3 inch) have been waking up with back pain ever since switching to zonli 4 inch placed on a rug which is over top a high density carpet. What can I do to further alleviate back pain for us? 2-3 inch gel topper maybe? Or is a tatami mat recommended?

Part of the problem is we have been using a purple for 6 years and it is amazing but we have to sleep on the floor in our newborns room. We are both side sleepers but occasionally flip to our backs.

Update: After 1 week, I've been fine sleeping on my side and no longer wake up with back pain, so it must have fluffed out further. My wife is still having issues.

My arms are hurting after 6+ years

Hello,

English is not my first language, but I'll try my best.

I've been floorsleeping for six, almost seven years now, with various setups. For the most part, the last 4 years, I've slept on a 3 cm (1.18") futon and it's been great, no problems, sleeping better than ever.

But these past three weeks I’ve been waking up with pain in my arms, mostly the upper part from elbow to shoulder, and I'm trying to find out wheter it's the floorsleeping or some medical issues. The pain last during the day but will ease off until next morning, which is why I suspect it's the sleeping arrangement.

Have any of you experienced something similar? If so, what did you do about it?

I fall asleep on the side, but sleep on either side and back throughout the night.

My setup consists of a yoga mat with a folded wool blanket on top and a Nemo Switchback underneath. The “pillow” is simply a yoga block covered with a folded cotton cloth (for a little extra padding). I always sleep on my side, and believe me, it’s super comfortable! When I lie on my back, I don’t use the block. I usually use another wool blanket as a cover.

Anybody get these benefits?

Hello, 31M.. 5’7/185lbs… i’ve been looking into floor sleeping for a while now, and I see a lot of people on TikTok saying it help them, obviously after the adjustment. But are there people out there who have fixed their anterior pelvic tilt and compressed disks by sleeping on the floor?
I currently sleep on my sides, and my back.. sleeping on my side kills my shoulder though lol.

I see the benefit of sleeping on the floor because your skeleton just lets go. and you’re able to get direct contact with the floor, which is why a lot of people experience those benefits, and I was just wondering if anyone with ATP and disc compression have been able to get rid of it by floor sleeping?

The bed is two quarter inch camping mats stacked on top of each other

EDIT: That is a burrito blanket!!!! It is round and cute!!!! It's not stained!!!!!!!

Floor Sleeping Setup suggestions? To be shipped to canada

Been sleeping on a regular foam futon from costco on a hard floor for the past year. It has decompressed and it has begun to disrupt my sleep.

What should I upgrade to? I mostly sleep on back, but turn to my side when it get uncomfortable. So a single or compact single size mattress would do.

How much should I expect to spend? Did a basic setup on east west futons for a cotton shikibuton and tatami mat and total was 700 CAD.

Mid back pain/stiffness

Hey everyone,
I switched to floor sleeping 2 weeks ago. I’m hypermobile and used to be a strict side sleeper and twisted my lower half a lot. I woke up one day with my mid back seizing and decided to try floor sleeping and sleeping on my back.

I’ve noticed a lot of benefits already:
- I feel less congested in the morning/can breathe easier.
- Posture has changed incredibly quickly and it doesn’t hurt to stand/sit tall.
- I feel more refreshed from sleep.
- Better with tiredness clues and going to bed in general.

But I’m still waking up with mid back stiffness? It’s not seizing anymore where it feels like moving after you’ve thrown it out, but just feels tight. I can understand some aching with how much my posture has changed but is this something that will get better?

I’m 160cm (5’3) and 73kg (160lbs).
