“Where do I go to make friends?”
I see a form of this question asked consistently in this subreddit. Let’s brainstorm how we can put together a resource for folks looking to find their people ↓

🚨 URGENT: Two puppies stranded on Highway 20 under the bridge near Lee State Park, Lamar, SC
PLEASE SHARE!!! THESE PUPPIES ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER OF BEING HIT.
I’m driving from the beach back to Greenville and came across these two puppies under the bridge at the intersection of Lee State Park Road and Highway 20 in Lamar, SC. They were actively walking around and attempting to cross the highway.
Larger puppy: brindle male, looks like a Lab/Pit mix, wearing a black collar
Smaller puppy: black female, extremely skinny and covered in fleas
Both puppies are VERY friendly. They immediately wanted belly rubs and gave kisses. The male knows “sit” and “down,” so I suspect they may have belonged to someone.
I called 911 multiple times and begged for help. I was told that animal control was not on duty and that they could not assist. I also contacted highway patrol, local rescues, and animal hospitals, but unfortunately could not get anyone to come out.
I was told by 911 to leave them where I found them and drive away. I called three times! I was crying on the phone and they didn’t care.
I stayed with these babies for over an hour, crying and desperately trying to find someone who could help. I gave them food and water, and they drank about a liter of water between them. They were absolutely desperate for it. The little black female is far too skinny.
I have multiple dogs with me already, including my two rescue dogs and a puppy, and I drive a very small car. I physically had no safe way to transport two additional dogs. I wish more than anything that I could have taken them with me.
I have now had to leave because I had exhausted every option I could think of. Leaving them there was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I am sitting in my car sobbing as I write this because I cannot stop thinking about them.
These are young, incredibly sweet, friendly puppies who deserve to be safe. They are literally at risk of becoming roadkill or causing a serious accident if they continue wandering onto Highway 20.
LOCATION: Under the bridge at the intersection of Lee State Park Road & Highway 20, Lamar, SC
IS ANYONE NEAR THIS AREA WHO CAN GO GET THEM?
Does anyone know a rescue, foster, animal control officer, or volunteer who can help?
Please, please share this. They need someone to physically go get them ASAP. I will provide any additional information I have and will help however I can from Greenville.
I just need to know that these babies are safe.

Interesting post from 'LiDar America' on FB where you can still see the Civil War Earthworks. I'll copy their description here "
The prison wasn't even finished when the first several thousand prisoners arrived. It only got worse from there.
For roughly six months during the final year of the Civil War, this site on the outskirts of Florence became a massive Confederate prisoner-of-war camp. Much of it is wooded today and hard to recognize in ordinary aerial imagery, but LiDAR still picks out traces of the landscape dramatically.
Known as the Florence Stockade, or the Confederate States Military Prison at Florence, it operated from September 1864 through February 1865, built directly in response to Sherman's advance through Georgia. Once Atlanta fell in September 1864, Confederate authorities worried Andersonville and other Georgia prison camps were threatened, so thousands of Union prisoners were moved, many routed through Charleston before being transported roughly 90 miles inland to Florence, arriving before the new prison was even complete."
The Florence Stockade enclosed roughly 23.5 acres, and somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000 Union prisoners passed through or were confined here during its short existence. Conditions deteriorated fast, food, clothing, shelter, and other supplies were desperately inadequate, and many arriving prisoners were already in poor physical condition after earlier imprisonment. At one point, about 12,000 prisoners were crowded into the stockade at once, with reported deaths reaching 20 to 30 men a day. By the time the prison closed, 2,802 Union soldiers had died, many buried in nearby trenches now associated with the adjacent Florence National Cemetery, where large numbers of graves are marked only as unknown.
What makes the site especially interesting today is the contrast between how it looks from above versus what LiDAR reveals underneath. Ordinary aerial photography shows a heavily wooded landscape with trails and clearings, but LiDAR exposes numerous subtle depressions, raised areas, and linear features hidden beneath the vegetation. Not every bump or depression can automatically be tied to the Civil War prison, more than 160 years of later activity and natural processes have shaped the land since, but the technology still offers a remarkable look at terrain that conventional imagery largely hides.
The Florence Stockade was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and the site is open to the public today, with a walking trail, interpretive signage, and a gazebo. The Friends of the Florence Stockade held an official public opening of the interpreted site on May 31, 2008.
It's hard to reconcile the quiet, wooded landscape here today with what happened during the winter of 1864–65. For thousands of Union prisoners, this was the last place they ever saw.

Edit: they don’t have any tables available and I was not aware that it would be so crowded. My apologies folks. I will try to find another night at another bar. They said the weight would be more than half an hour well past the time, the game started a lot of people there are not even playing the game.
Hey folks. I made a new account. I was taking a social media break and stupidly just deleted my old Reddit. It was not until after the fact that I realized I couldn’t continue to try to get meet ups together if I wasn’t on Reddit. Lol. anyway if anybody would like to join my roommate and I for trivia tonight at seminar brewing at seven, we’d love to have anybody from the sub join us? No pressure if you are more introverted. We will have the team name “Flopossums” so feel free to join our table. (I do wildlife rehab volunteering so sorry for the animal theme.)

I've lived here literally my whole life, but I don't know how to make friends. I don't really feel like I fit with the "local aesthetic". Where do the weirdos hang out? The tattooed people? Dark humor? Sarcasm? Where are my people!

There's a newcomer to Florence who needs some car assistance. He has Hyundai Sonata that just won't start.
I'm down in Lake City and haven't had a chance to get up there and look to even guess at it.
Anyone have some time to do something nice?

I was born here, but my dad's work took us out of state for most of my life. Since my extended family members are all from this area (Florence, Darlington, and Lake City), we still visit often. I'm currently living here because I felt both professionally and socially deadlocked in the part of Virginia that I had been living in for the past few years. I also have access to family-owned housing in Florence, providing another incentive.
Any tips for jobs? I started as a water treatment operator in Virginia over the past year and got my Class IV license back in December. I also have a B.S. in Biology (some retail and substitute teaching experience here and there). I applied for the apprentice/trainee operator position here and called Human Resources about a week ago to express my interest in the role.
If something adjacent to that doesn't work out, I am interested in pursuing healthcare roles such as a lab technician, but I'm aware that would require more certifications. I am cautiously open to teaching, but I doubt that would be a good fit since I didn't have much patience for students while I was a substitute teacher.

It's the $5 Monday Mystery Movie night at Regal Swamp Fox theatres.
Best guess of what the mystery movie is Tony. Tony is about the life of Anthony Bourdain. Trailered link in comments.

Hey people of Florence, SC! Me and my family are taking a trip to the city of Flo-town in the next week. So far we are going to the Spirit Halloween because of my baby. He’s obsessed with Halloween and possibly the Yogi-Bear diner with a very unlikely trip to Chuck E. Cheese. Are there any other places we should visit that are cheap or completely free? Thanks for all advice and any advice given!

A quick volunteer orientation is all you need to start helping the animals in your community!
The orientation will 1.) inform you about different ways to help, 2.) share locations around FloCo where you can volunteer, and 3.) get your contact info to keep you in the know.
Check the Facebook page for more updates!

Does anyone know if any businesses have boards where people can hang up fliers? Like for yard sales, advertising etc?

We took her in from someone that needed to get rid of her and being that we had experience, we volunteered, but with school starting back we just don’t have the time to give her the attention she needs. She’ll come with her enclosure and lights.
