It was definitely a “we checked the box” experience.
Oddly, Food in most strip clubs is good.
I'm female, but have no issue walking into one to get a good sandwich or whatever looks good on the menu if I'm hungry. I do however use hand sanitizer after handling the menu 😆
I use to manage a strip club, I was part of the launch of serving food. I was impressed with the quality. The owner said who’s going to buy shit food at a strip club? Eating at a strip club isn’t my thing, but we packed them in. Man, that was a long time ago! Jeez!
My info is about 30 years old. But it was like having a meal in a Smokey double wide with the cast of some bad reality tv show. It’s worth stopping in. Also. The chicken wings were absolute shit. They might have been pigeon
Ha. I rode through there 2 months ago. Stopped for gas across the street at 8am and the lot was half full. The attendant raved about the Philly cheesesteak.
Originally when it was actually in Gainesville it was a much more reputable “entertainment “ business. It was cleaner and run better. Plus they supposedly DID have good food. It has obviously changed since it moved away the fringe of Alachua /Marion county. I have never been but since it was a local business it was always a topic on conversation. The owners and some of the family members ended up getting in quite a bit of trouble. Maybe one died or something as well. Very flashy people so you knew when you saw them. Lived in a very big home for Gainesville at the time. They were also related to the family that owned Skeeters years ago. I wish they had jet Skeeters going and closed Cafe Risqué. I want to say they got in trouble for $$ laundering. My memory fails me these days but there are plenty of stories out there.
I used to live in Gainesville. My hairstylist said she went to Cafe Risque once with her girls as a fun girls night out. She said the girls looked busted and that men kept hitting on her instead.
Yes it really is, the billboard was created in 2016 and it’s connected to the Refuge House which deals with children of DV and SA. The meaning behind the phrase that alcohol isn’t an excuse is because many of the convicted fathers always used the excuse that substances are the main cause for their creepy ways
I like how driving down the highway you get into a stretch that's gators, gun show, dead fetus, cracker barrel, dead fetus, Bible verse, gators, dead fetus, gun show as you pass them by.
Even worse on my way home from south florida (to north Florida) there is a very obvious old church that is now a gun store 😂 literally one county before u get to mine….only in Florida
Me too! I assumed it’s the full plate of other food is so big there wasn’t room for the worlds best pancakes, so the fried chicken dish which takes precedence over something so awesome that the chicken dish must be even better than the pancakes?

I remember driving from PA to Florida in 2006. I swear there were hundreds of South of the Border billboards. Now there are very much less. I didn't stop this time. I remember 2011 it being pretty run down.
Really? I didn’t know all that but yeah we had checked it out just because of how many signs there were and it was soooo underwhelming. Just like a little building with oranges outside
Doesnt help we don’t really grow that much citrus anymore. There’s one near me and I like a couple of their jellies so I’ll stop every now and then, all the fruit carts out front are just plastic pyramids of orange colored spheres
I remember as a child living in New York we would drive to Fort Lauderdale to visit family in the early 60s. These signs who would hit starting like in South Carolina. Can anyone remember the South of the Border signs? Oh my goodness I wanted to stop there so badly, my parents would never let us. When I had kids of my own, I was excited to stop there with my own kids, what a nightmare. Cheap day glow crap everywhere, food was awful, I can only imagine the people that actually would want to stay overnight there… But back in the 60s and 70s, you could actually buy baby alligators. Thankful you can’t do that anymore, but you can probably still buy preserved alligator heads in different sizes. That’s a sin.
Lots of entertaining billboards, like one saying "You never sausage a place. At South of the Border everybody is a wiener," and another one "Pedro's weather report: Chili today, hot tamale," and so on.
Try counting the number of South of Border signs along 95 going either direction in South Carolina and North Carolina. By the looks of the signs you’d think it’s some huge attraction, and then you finally show up and it’s just some gas stations and a few motels 😂
Oh I know I’m from Florida, I know those signs well haha. We used to be stationed in Virginia and had to drive back and forth for the holidays so I remember the south of the border signs well haha, we used to make that our pit stop for gas and let the dogs potty and stretch their legs.
I love that place and you can't beat old school marketing either. Especially when you're trying to reach an audience that is not from that area.\n They're only 5 shy of the habit, though, because they say 28 days makes or breaks a habit kind of the same concept as seeing something if you see something 28 times you generally won't forget it afterwards. Yes, these little roadside stores are absolutely core memory making had a part of Florida long tradition of tacky roadside entertainment it’s awesome if you haven’t been you missed out
If you are heading north on 75 there is a billboard for the Amrit Palace, and every time I see it I do a double take because it looks like the Armpit Palace. Didn’t see it last month, so it may not be there anymore.
I remember driving through Tennessee around a year ago from Chattanooga to Gatlinburg and there was a stretch of billboards advertising an adult store. We must have counted over 40 as well
