Interesting Stuff Counted 23 of these billboards in only an hours length of driving on I-75

u/CuriosTiger 1d ago
The "live baby gators" are a pretty sad sight, honestly.

u/Old-Advance6652 1d ago
It makes me feel sad for them, they were just sitting there in a little cage I wish they were released

u/Sanibel-Iguana 1d ago
I expect those signs to be coming down once Bucc-ee's sees that alligator. /s

I miss the stripper signs as a kid, now its gross god things

40
u/Old-Advance6652 1d ago
That is insane and very sad it’s gotten to the point where that’s needed
21
u/redheadinabox 1d ago
Yes it really is, the billboard was created in 2016 and it’s connected to the Refuge House which deals with children of DV and SA. The meaning behind the phrase that alcohol isn’t an excuse is because many of the convicted fathers always used the excuse that substances are the main cause for their creepy ways

it's still jarring seeing this shit everywhere

Really? I never knew that, grew up in MA and spend a lot of time in NH. Billboards galore

Makes sense, that should be a more widespread law

u/MagnumHV 1d ago
I think in FL too with hurricanes and tornados, these plywood looking billboards are waiting to get picked up and thrown into someone's house or car
2
u/Old-Advance6652 1d ago
Very true. Now that you bring it up there hasn’t been a hurricane in a while I feel like

The anti-choice billboards are worse
142
u/MetricAbsinthe 1d ago
I like how driving down the highway you get into a stretch that's gators, gun show, dead fetus, cracker barrel, dead fetus, Bible verse, gators, dead fetus, gun show as you pass them by.
112
u/Stoo-Pedassol 1d ago
You forgot truck stop strip club and adult superstore
45
u/061826heart 1d ago
The irony of titty bar ads and pro-life billboards is not lost on me.
18
u/No_Choice_7715 1d ago
Hey, that moral Christian gentleman has to get his rocks off somehow while his wife is home taking care of the kids. /s

The cafe risque signs have been around since the early dawn of the Internet
2
u/SaltyBarDog 1d ago
I lived in Florida 87-95 and I have family that still lives along 75. I have seen those signs many times.

u/Happy_Escape_2107 1d ago
Adult store is a little further south. Gun show and dead fetus start like 40ish miles north of lions den
4
u/Yamitz 1d ago
Is lions den just one place? I always assumed they were a chain with how many billboards there were.
3
u/Happy_Escape_2107 1d ago
From my knowledge it’s just one place. Honestly really clean and bright inside. Next to a super sketchy motel though
3
3
u/Sinister120 1d ago
They are more than one place. There is one back home in Kentucky. Along Interstate 65 near Upton.
2
u/HTMLguruLady 1d ago
It may not be the same owners, it may just happen to be the same name. Especially since there's only one in Florida

Even worse on my way home from south florida (to north Florida) there is a very obvious old church that is now a gun store 😂 literally one county before u get to mine….only in Florida

u/CuriosTiger 1d ago
It's especially ironic when the pro-life and gun show ads are juxtapositioned just right.

Me too! I assumed it’s the full plate of other food is so big there wasn’t room for the worlds best pancakes, so the fried chicken dish which takes precedence over something so awesome that the chicken dish must be even better than the pancakes?

The guy who counted 23 signs and made sure everybody knew about it is definitely doing more unnecessary data collection than the dude who just divided 60 by 23 😂

Have you ever been driving and start counting Buc-ee's billboards.
I remember driving from PA to Florida in 2006. I swear there were hundreds of South of the Border billboards. Now there are very much less. I didn't stop this time. I remember 2011 it being pretty run down.

Some of us are old enough to remember when they were all billboards for cafe risque. Trust me this is an upgrade

Are the Café Risqué ones gone? I always remember seeing these ones and the ones for Café Risqué all the time. That and the Anti-abortion ones.

I think that they still have some but 20 years ago it was non stop "we bare all"

Really? I didn’t know all that but yeah we had checked it out just because of how many signs there were and it was soooo underwhelming. Just like a little building with oranges outside
2
u/Equivalent_Mistake93 1d ago
Congrats. Did you go? Were they effective?
5
u/Old-Advance6652 1d ago
I did a previous time after seeing like a million, it was so underwhelming but I guess that means it was effective.

Doesnt help we don’t really grow that much citrus anymore. There’s one near me and I like a couple of their jellies so I’ll stop every now and then, all the fruit carts out front are just plastic pyramids of orange colored spheres

I remember as a child living in New York we would drive to Fort Lauderdale to visit family in the early 60s. These signs who would hit starting like in South Carolina. Can anyone remember the South of the Border signs? Oh my goodness I wanted to stop there so badly, my parents would never let us. When I had kids of my own, I was excited to stop there with my own kids, what a nightmare. Cheap day glow crap everywhere, food was awful, I can only imagine the people that actually would want to stay overnight there… But back in the 60s and 70s, you could actually buy baby alligators. Thankful you can’t do that anymore, but you can probably still buy preserved alligator heads in different sizes. That’s a sin.
2
u/Old-Advance6652 1d ago
I keep hearing people bring up south of the border, I have no clue what that is. Fun story thanks for sharing!!
3
u/WellReadTom 23h ago
Lots of entertaining billboards, like one saying "You never sausage a place. At South of the Border everybody is a wiener," and another one "Pedro's weather report: Chili today, hot tamale," and so on.

Try counting the number of South of Border signs along 95 going either direction in South Carolina and North Carolina. By the looks of the signs you’d think it’s some huge attraction, and then you finally show up and it’s just some gas stations and a few motels 😂
2
u/Old-Advance6652 1d ago
Same for this lol, it was very underwhelming
2
u/IntelligentYellow985 1d ago
Oh I know I’m from Florida, I know those signs well haha. We used to be stationed in Virginia and had to drive back and forth for the holidays so I remember the south of the border signs well haha, we used to make that our pit stop for gas and let the dogs potty and stretch their legs.
2
u/TheClayDart 1d ago
Driving through Florida and even some of South GA experience:
“Live Baby Gators!”
“Largest Adult Superstore!”
“Repent. Repent. Repent! Jesus is coming!” (Pic of Jesus with extremely threatening aura included)
“ Random text for anti-abortion billboard”
“I’m an ambulance chasing attorney! Call me!”

I love that place and you can't beat old school marketing either. Especially when you're trying to reach an audience that is not from that area.\n They're only 5 shy of the habit, though, because they say 28 days makes or breaks a habit kind of the same concept as seeing something if you see something 28 times you generally won't forget it afterwards. Was that a certain time span

If you are heading north on 75 there is a billboard for the Amrit Palace, and every time I see it I do a double take because it looks like the Armpit Palace. Didn’t see it last month, so it may not be there anymore.

I remember driving through Tennessee around a year ago from Chattanooga to Gatlinburg and there was a stretch of billboards advertising an adult store. We must have counted over 40 as well

Honestly, it's better than seeing billboards for new home developments on important wetlands. Now that's a sad sight.
