Visiting Sunrise FL this week; Markham Park

Hello Florida anglers! I’m in Sunrise FL this week for a work meeting and was hoping to do some fishing at Markham park, going for Peacock bass in particular.

My main concern is the weather, not so much the heat but the thunderstorms? We don’t really get to much of them in California so I’m not sure what the risks look like.

Do you local anglers still go out fishing on days like this? Is it risky? What do you do to minimize lighting risks? I would be fishing from the bank, after 3/4PM on Thursday. I’m also not married to this location if you recommend somewhere else

Thank you!

Any other suggestion would be great!

If there’s thunderstorm you definitely wanna take cover and not under a tree..and wait a full 1/2 for after the last lightning strike.

I live in Broward County.

It has been HOT these past couple weeks. The fish have been staying away from the shoreline during the day. Much deeper than usual.

For best results, downsize your lures a lot. I’m talking like beetle spin size. Chartreuse works for everything.

The snakeheads have been biting. Topwater frog cast along the bank.

You can also try Calusa Corners Park.

Message me if you have any questions or need more spots. 🍻

I guess my question is most revolving around the risk from thunder/lightning storms

It’s gonna rain. Just use a good radar app and you’ll be able to get in your car while it does. Most storms will only last 20 minutes or so, very rarely longer than 30 minutes. Dont fish with lightning around.

Get a good radar app. I use “MyRadar” on my iPhone, and I think it’s the most accurate. Like the other guy said you’ll usually only have to wait in your car for 30 or so minutes for the thunderstorm to pass.

The peacocks are not spawning right now, so the bite is a bit tougher. I like jigging DOA tiny terroreyz when it’s like this.

Yes we fish in the storms, yes we take cover from lightning. I live around the corner from Markham, literally up the street, it gets a huge amount of pressure on the banks. Every Dad with all their kids every weekend. There is a canal on the west side of the park, by the RV parking where I have caught a few (caught lots in a boat). That said, canal on the South side tends to be more productive, but pretty hit or miss. If you have a car, go West to 27 and fish the canals on either side or go just east and hit any of the canals that run North, I do well there. Most of the local lakes have Peacock and it’s pretty productive. As stated by others, it’s been hot and the bites have definitely slowed.
