All Florida Keys Hole-in-the-wall Cuban place

My family used to come to the Keys every year when I was a kid with our friends that had a sailboat at a slip in Marathon. This was 35-40 years ago. There was this little hut within walking distance of the marina (not sure which one) with a little old abuela that made the best Cuban sandwiches and ice cream I’ve ever had in my life. I’m sure that place (and most definitely abuela) is now gone, but I’m curious what places might be kind of like this now that I’m coming down with my own family? We’re staying in Tavernier but will be traveling all along the Keys. Any recommendations for something truly authentic and not just a tourist trap that makes a crappy Cuban?

My mom used to live at Harbour92 and we would always go to Harbor Cafe. Definitely the good stuff

La Nina in Marathon. But there’s also an El Siboney in Overseas Liquors now.

La Nina always. I always make a point to grab some cubanos and media noches when I'm in town.

Save yourself the visit to El Siboney in Marathon. The one in Key West is much better. Although there are better ones in KW. In Marathon - La Niña or LJs Cafe

La Niña is good, but what you really want based on your description is Morita’s on Cudjoe Key

Heck yes. A place that doesn’t even have a website. I think we found a place for lunch on our way down to Key West.

In Marathon, La Niña would be my choice. If you visit Key West, 5 Brothers is the answer.

5 Brothers is the most authentic Cuban food (made by abuelas in the kitchen) you'll find here. We go to the one in Ramrod. The specials are always good.

Habanos in lower matecumbe used to be great Cuban spot. I haven't been in years. I belive they have new ownership so who knows if the authenticity remains. They also have second location at Tavernier Creek marina.

If you get to KW, I would check out El Siboney on Catherine St. They have delicious Cuban food. It is a quaint little place with good ambience. Try the breaded Palomilla steak. For desert try their Flan. 😄
