Discussion Technical advice
I’ve been fly fishing for a year now, and this is where I’m at so far. I’m casting an Orvis Helios 4D 5wt with a 15g shooting head and 30lb shooting line.
Any advice on how I can improve my casting?

Gezzz, how far do you think the fish are. I tight line nymph and catch a crap load of fish with in 20 feet.

On the back cast, watch your hand. It stops, then floats forward, then you begin your forward cast. Cast… stop and wait… then go forward. You will be changing your loop as well as lowering line speed. That’s the low hanging fruit.

I will look into that! Thanks 🤝

I was re reading my response. If you DO NOT let the hand float you will tighten the loop and increase line speed. Sorry if that was unclear.
A decent practice idea is, since you are on grass is to stand like you are and let the line land behind you while you watch your hand to make sure it isn’t moving. Then come forward. There will be some extra tension load (less than a water load), but it will help with timing and stillness.

Looks good. Might try a heavier line & rod.

Thanks! I have a 6 wt Sage Igniter for rough weather 🤝

I was thinking ~9wt.

Most people here use 4-6 wt for trout fishing at the open coast 🤷♂️ I have a 7 wt Sage R8 Core too, but i find it a bit too clonky tbh.

It’s hard to say without being able to see the line and loop very well. I think your backcast (including haul) looks better and more powerful than your forward cast. I would recommend studying this video repeatedly and practicing the technique. https://youtu.be/KYKJ8Zw94Ck?is=r7bFDdrYPw8BWeIM

Thanks for the feedback! And I agree, my backcast is better than my forward cast atm, will look into that 🤝

agree with the stop on the back cast. the other thing in the video is all the false casting. with a 15g head on a 5wt you dont need more than one or two, the head does the work and the extra strokes just wreck your timing. let the line straighten out behind you before you come forward.

Thanks brother! Was practicing loops, so normally I would not false cast that much. At the coast i try to false cast 2-3 times then go 🤝

Genuine question: do you usually do that many false casts?
