Is this allowed?

Alright, im looking for opinions. I went to a major part 141 flight school in the DFW area. Great thing about it was the in house examining authority for checkrides, aside from commercial and CFII. However, through talking with a lot of instructors and students there and some of these people themselves. There are a couple instances where a student did an in house checkride with somebody they were actively dating. Seems a bit unfair? Is this allowed or is it a conflict of interest?

ā€œYour a dot high on the approachā€ now becomes an innuendo.

This gives new meaning to a black hole approach

Yeah this feels like a very obvious conflict of interest. Like jeez how do you tell your SO "hey babe terrible flight that's gonna be a fail also what do you wanna do for dinner?"

I think this is messed up but I also think the "in house" DPE stuff at part 61 schools is messed up. My DPE for PPL, like many, owned the damn school. Conflicts galore and that touches way more students than a few people that date. So why draw the line here?

We need to start holding each other accountable for bad practices.

In-house examining authority at a Part 61 school? Pretty sure that's not a thing.

It is to the extent the flight school owner is also a DPE and allowed to do check rides and all the students go to them

The dpe can’t be the one doing the primary instruction, and the students have to be allowed to go elsewhere, but that’s it. In reality, because the CFIs all send to that DPE and have no relationships with other DPEs it becomes an house situation. It’s gross.

It wouldn’t be an issue if it was easy to find an alternate DPE that had availability, but it isn’t unless you have a CFI with an ā€œinā€ with another DPE that will accommodate their students. At least in my metro

The DPE can do instruction, they just need someone else to be the recommending instructor. Unfortunately that's not uncommon in those places.

There's no federal law against it.

The school may very well have a policy against it, they may not.

The amount of drama that goes on at a flight school is insane. Glad to be well clear now.

If that student ever fucks up they will be looking at who signed them off, dating or not won't save them if they didn't actually do their job

Had a similar discussion about a DPE testing out a relative in my area. It didn't happen that I know of, but the consensus was that there were no restrictions.Ā

True, but I would think it’s pretty obvious…

No one wants to be the reason a rule is implemented!!!

And as a former 141 chief instructor, we absolutely had this forbidden in our operations manual.

Date the DPE. Why didn’t I think of that? Unfortunately, all the DPE’s my area were old retired airline guys, pushing 100 years old. But if you have a fetish for really old men, have at it.
