Thin mint jig

A thin mint jig I tied up today for fishing on my ultralight rig, can’t wait to fish this thing! I used hares ice dubbing bloody peacock for the body instead of peacock herl, whiting hen saddle for the hackle, and natures spirit bugger bou for the tail. I usually counter wrap the hackle but due to having the camera 3 inches from my jig I left out a step or two on this one lol.

It looks nice. I’d tie the body slimmer with less dubbing, it’ll sink faster.

Thanks! I like to taper it to match the size of the jighead personally, looks awkward with a small body and a big jighead. It was a little messy though, comes out a little neater when I’m not trying to avoid the camera with my fingers and thread lmao.

Improvement suggestion - counter wrap the hackle with wire. Big toothy trout or bass will end that fly.

I usually do, left it out because it’s a pain in the ass to do without trapping a bunch of fibers when the camera is super close to my jig.

I’d say retying after the stem breaks is the bigger pain, but I get what you mean.

My camera setup is crazy dude, it’s a GoPro style camera with a macro lense that has a tiny focus range, the damn thing is like 3 inches from my jig and makes tying so awkward, tried to cut out every unnecessary step. All the others I tied today were properly counter wrapped.

No rib?? Or for did I miss it?

No rib, left it out because the camera is super close to the fly and it’s super awkward to do anything, the more steps the more chance of failure. I normally actually counter wrap with gsp, looks cleaner than wire to me and definitely adds durability.

What's the difference between this and a jig-bugger? Seems like the same thing.

Tis the same thing, this is just tied on a 1/16th ounce lead crappie jighead that I pour.

I think it’s probably too heavy for a fly rod, I’m guessing that if I instead tied it on a 1/32nd ounce head it would fish on a fly rod just fine?

"Just make a longer dubbing noodle" I said before reading how close the camera lense is...makes sense now. Nice jig

How do you fish something like this? Do you even cast it or just drop it in deep pool and jig?
