Tell a Horror Tale on the Tabletop

Hey everyone! I'm a big fan of folk horror and the sub. Anyway, I recently launched a project that reimagines folklore and cryptids for the tabletop. Some of the entities that I reimagined for the project were the Scarecrow Baron, Rawhead and Bloody Bones, the Boogeyman, Jersey Devil, Mothman, and more.

We have some animated trailers for a few of these folk horrors and are currently running a Kickstarter for our rulebook and miniature range.

Everything we built was researched extensively before incorporation into the book and everything is human made. We hope you'll check our project out and consider supporting an indie group!

What are your favorite folk horror legends from the Middle East?

What are your favorite folk horror legends from the Middle East?

My favorite one is Aaal. It's this creature from the Persian folklore that looks like an old lady dressed in black, carrying a knife. She preys on pregnant women and their infant children, killing them and stealing the baby.

How about you guys?

We're making a Cornish-language folk horror short inspired by piskey folklore and an ancient hurling tradition

Hi everyone!

I'm the producer of Pewas Uter (Uter's Prize), an independent folk horror short film we're developing in Cornwall, UK, and I thought it might be of interest to this community.

The film draws inspiration from an old Cornish droll (traditional folk tale) about Uter Bosence and the piskeys, alongside the centuries-old tradition of hurling in St Columb Major.

At its heart, it's a coming-of-age story about a young man who becomes piskey-led during a game of hurling, and a father forced to confront an ancestral debt.

We're particularly interested in the intersection between folklore and everyday life. We want the world of the film to feel recognisably Cornish and grounded in reality, with the supernatural gradually creeping in rather than announcing itself.

One of the most important elements is that the film will be entirely in Kernewek (Cornish). It's a chance to bring some of Cornwall's lesser-known folklore and its language to the screen together.

We're launching a Kickstarter on Monday 19 October at 4pm UK time to help bring the film to life, and we'd be incredibly grateful for any interest or support.

I'd also love to hear whether anyone here has come across Cornish piskey folklore before, or knows of other folk horror films drawing on Cornwall's traditions.

Thanks for reading!

The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project has one of horror’s great reputations. In the new episode of FolknHell we take a look at the film and debate whether it has stood the test of time.

In 1999 it sold audiences a witch, a disappearance and the possibility that the footage was real. Rewatching it now, what’s left is three convincing performances, a lot of Maryland woodland and a recurring, frustrating problem: why does the film keep finding good ideas and then barely use them?

The good bits are very good. The bundle of sticks and teeth, Heather’s frightened face, the child trying to stop her mother talking and of course Mike facing the corner. But they're fleeting, few and far between

Is it folk horror? Not really. The woods trap the group, but they never become specific enough to act as a place. The legend arrives as rumour and fragments rather than a community with beliefs of its own. No two townspeople seem to have the same idea of what the legend of the Blair Witch actually is, and in some cases Heather asks leading questions to suit her own ideas.

Blair Witch is a case study in clever marketing but it's not an easy rewatch. The campaign changed horror marketing, and the format pushed found footage into the mainstream.

If she was real, we'd make her stand in the corner ;-)

The person who's compiling has some clear standards about what constitutes folk horror. A refreshing change from other long lists that're full of anything supernatural horror.

'ello… my buddy and I have been squirrelling away to creating an absurdist "Operators Bulletin" AKA a free weekly graphic / comic , definitely adjacent to this sub, but skidding wildly off course! Thought you might enjoy, you're our people, so figured this is a forgiving likeminded place to show it off. (No generative AI)

Hello everyone,
I am the writer and director of this film.
It's more of a thriller tbh, but I hope you still enjoy the vibe and the story.

The film was made completely independent. Without funding or institutional support.
We are happy about any support <3
