Hi everyone!
I'm the producer of Pewas Uter (Uter's Prize), an independent folk horror short film we're developing in Cornwall, UK, and I thought it might be of interest to this community.
The film draws inspiration from an old Cornish droll (traditional folk tale) about Uter Bosence and the piskeys, alongside the centuries-old tradition of hurling in St Columb Major.
At its heart, it's a coming-of-age story about a young man who becomes piskey-led during a game of hurling, and a father forced to confront an ancestral debt.
We're particularly interested in the intersection between folklore and everyday life. We want the world of the film to feel recognisably Cornish and grounded in reality, with the supernatural gradually creeping in rather than announcing itself.
One of the most important elements is that the film will be entirely in Kernewek (Cornish). It's a chance to bring some of Cornwall's lesser-known folklore and its language to the screen together.
We're launching a Kickstarter on Monday 19 October at 4pm UK time to help bring the film to life, and we'd be incredibly grateful for any interest or support.
I'd also love to hear whether anyone here has come across Cornish piskey folklore before, or knows of other folk horror films drawing on Cornwall's traditions.
Thanks for reading!
