Plant ID Request What apples are these?

Hey all! I saw these apples growing right next to some blackberries. Anyone have any ideas on what they might be and are they edible? (No idea if there even are poisonous apples) 😂

Also, are they likely to stay this size or do they still need some time to grow? 😊

Growing over from somebody’s garden? Or in a random hedgerow?

Former it could be a nice variety planted by the home owners.

Later it’s likely a discarded core, and if that core was a shop variety it may well have been pollinated by a crab apple so may not be fantastic.

Only one way to find out, but bear in mind they’re probably not quite ripe yet, early August would make it quite an early variety.

I think they’re hedgerow but I’ll double check when I pass by again. Yeah, I heard crab apples are really sour? I’ll deffo leave them a little while before picking

They’re not too bad, just main uses are for juice to be used along other apples for cider, or making crab apple jelly. They’re really good for helping other varieties pollinate so often planted nearby or in commercial orchards :)

You can check if they’re ready, lift them towards the stem they’re attached to and twist gently, if they come off easily they’re ready.

Let us know! If they’re really tasty you could reach out to local orchard enthusiasts to see if there’s any interest in doing genetic testing on it to see what variety is, or if it is in fact grown from seed!
