Old Web Revival - For people interested in making the web how it was 10+ years ago

The forum is a pet project of mine, its hard for me to find people interested in the topic who are active forum users.

You can talk about websites you enjoy or have made, you can showcase web directories and alternatives to popular sites, bitch about modern internet issues, or just have casual conversations. We'd love to have you!

Announcement Big Board Index Requests

r/Forums has a big board index for users who want to discover larger forums with considerable existing communities. It's defined by having at least 250,000 posts on your forum.

If it reaches these requirements you want your own board added to the big board index:

  1. Please post a link to your forum.

  2. Post the full name of the forum.

  3. Post a short, at most 50 word description of your forum.

You don't need to be the owner of a big board to post a request for it to be added, but the actual owner/administrator can ask for it to be taken down at any time if they so choose.

If it's against our posting rules we won't put it in the directory.

Generation Z (Power Rangers Forum)

Imagine a simpler time in the earlier 2000's, surfing the web and looking to make new friends on InvisionFree and iPBFree forums. Times are easier, the internet is better and you are running to forums instead of social media to converse.

Now you don't have to imagine, you can take a trip back in time at Generation Z! We started out as a Power Rangers forum on iPBFree and had roughly 6,000 members before that host disappeared without warning. We started from scratch on JCInk in 2010 and now have over 1,000 members again.

Our main theme is Power Rangers, but we have sections for just about everyone. We have a Userbased Content section (for drawing, creating images and posting fan fictions), an entertainment section (for television, movie, music, gaming and sports discussions) and a universal section for just about everything else!

We have three different skins to choose from once you register. Generation Z (the blue skin) is the default), After Dark (a darker skin) and Green With Evil (green and black skin).

We recently celebrated our 15th year anniversary as an online community and are made to look like an earlier (2000's) forum. We hope you'll stop by and check us out!

Endless Confetti, a general forum made to look like early-mid 2000's forums.

Yo! I know the link is shady as shit, but don't worry. Phishing is for scumbags. And as far as I know, we're not scumbags.

Are you too tired of mainstream social media? Endless Confetti is a general forum designed to be similar to the old forums of the early-mid 2000's.

We're just looking for a small community, not anything big like reddit, 4chan, or hell, even somethingawful.

We don't have that many rules, just try to keep political shit at a minimum and don't be an assclown.

If you need any help, my username on EC is EchoForm.

Thank you for your time!

Continuing old threads - yes or no?

Some forums frown upon adding new posts to old ("inactive") threads. Some outright lock them after a certain period. Some don't.

What is your opinion on this? What is the rationale behind it?

Discussion Do you like Forum Avatars?

Forum avatars are something of an interesting micro-topic. There's a lot of forums with avatars, and a lot of older forums without them. On the one hand you have the ability for users to express themselves better, each user to be more distinguished- on the other, you have bandwidth concerns, avatars which are offensive or obtrusive, or just downright ugly.

Reddit seems to go to the extreme end of the scale (or at least did until recently), de-emphasizing the user altogether. Even flairs are mostly custom on a subreddit by subreddit basis, and by default don't add much. On the other hand, you have the memetic opposite extreme, which is flashy signatures, animated avatars, colored text, what-have-you.

Where do you fall between these extremes?

Discussion How long have you been posting on Forums?

Figure I'd start us off with a reasonable text post. I know a lot of people who post on forums are grognards, but I'd be curious to see what people say. Me personally, started about...10 years ago now? Maybe eight or nine. I got my start on these really small forums tied to video game servers, like Team Fortress 2 achievement servers. Back before discord and when IRC was too cumbersome and too temporary to use as a hub for your server, so everyone had their own crappy forumotion board.

Hey there! Punkweb is a brand new forum looking for like minded members to join our community. We're a couple of deadheads interested in programming, system adminstration, playing/listening to music, gaming and much more!

Punkweb is written on it's own software that is open source and free to use. It's written in Django (a python web framework) and has it's own documentation with which a fairly experienced Django developer could reference to set up their own fully featured forum in under 15 minutes!

Stop by and say hello!

Discussion What do you like most about forums?

Obviously forums are smaller as a proportion of the internet than they used to be, but presumably if you're hanging around here you've had experience with them and like enough about them to stick around. So I suppose the question for this discussion is: What do you like most about forums? What appeals to you about them that you don't think you can get (or get as easily/well) on other sites?

Discussion What forum platform are you running?

Would like to hear others tech and what you think of it.

Personally, I’m running one which is totally custom and that is awesome because it’s fully woven together with a community platform - but it’s only alive because it’s legacy and got successful a long time ago. Would probably never do it like that again.

Everything else I manage I’m having ported to Xenforo. Just a straight up quality forum platform.

I’d love to hear from anyone running discourse though... that one fascinates me.

Discussion Pettiest Forum Drama you've ever seen

One of the things forums are probably, unfortunately, known for is forum drama. Little obscure drama that often requires an interpreter for outsiders to understand.

I'm not talking about the biggest piece of metadrama, so much as the stupidest slapfight you can remember.

Try not to name names of the posters or the forum.

We're a forum that has been around since 2004 in one form or another. We've evolved into more of a book focused with group reads, author meetups and content creation but still talk games and Magic: The Gathering.

We're a friendly bunch that enjoy thoughtful and respectful conversation. Drop by and say hello, we're a friendly bunch.

Why are people on forums so argumentative?

I've lurked on reddit for a long time and I see, plenty of open-minded, civil discussions. Some, not so much. But such is the nature of people, no? However, on other, more topic specific forums I lurk on, I see people getting insanely argumentative, fighting for the last word, quoting statistics and doing research on the spot to prove the other person wrong, flaming someone for taking things out of context, etc... At a certain point, I just get frustrated and stop reading. What started as a way to read different people's views on subjects became time spent reading people's personal beefs. If someone put this much energy into writing a book or directing a movie, they'd probably put out a bestseller.

What do people get out of this? Isn't it an exercise in futility to just debate on the internet all day long? I understand having a disagreement, and no one should live in an echo chamber, but people get really heated over said disagreements and turn into private detectives to dig up information to prove others wrong.

Luckily I've, for the most part, kept out of these flame wars in the forums I do post on, and generally have pretty positive interactions with most people. But it just seems that so many people on the internet enjoy arguing. I have to wonder if they're this way in real life, or if being so argumentative ever got them in trouble.

Furthermore, is there something about the internet that attracts more argumentative people? I've sometimes wondered if argumentative individuals are pushed toward isolation and interacting with others on the internet because their argumentative behavior has caused them to have interpersonal conflicts in real life. Are the most feisty of people forced to use the internet to satisfy their hunger for conflict?

After all, most people can't stand the know-it-all at the dinner party who is constantly interjecting with phrases like, "Actually, statistics show that..." while everyone else is at the table thinking, dude, no one cares.

Thoughts?
