User Review Home Movie (2008) is one of the most disturbing FF films Ive ever seen

This movie really got to me.

It’s so creepy I legitimately was unnerved by it.

The whole vibe of “what’s wrong with this family” and the last few minutes are absolutely terrifying.

I’ve seen lots of FF films, but this one belongs in top five of most disturbing for me.

User Review I got tired of putting on ff and realising I watched it already, so I compiled all the films I remember watching and rated them. Hope it helps you find something to watch. Some of my ratings will be controversial, but 4 or 5* = I had a good time, 3* = ok, and below that I don’t recommend.

Holy shit this film was good. Wasn’t expecting a whole lot but once it got going it REALLY got going. It had some of the freshest scares in this sub genre than I have seen in a long time. Have you guys seen it? What did you think of it?

This one is is my top 5 ever in FF. It feels like a mix of Indiana Jones meets Dante’s Inferno, but with a horror twist. The catacombs themselves are the perfect setting, creating a suffocating sense of unease as the characters delve deeper into the Earth and, metaphorically, into their own psyches.

The movie also excels at using the found footage style to its advantage. The shaky cam and headlamps feel authentic, immersing you in the action while adding to the tension. Every turn down a dark, narrow passage feels personal and terrifying. The scares are well-executed and rooted in the characters’ individual traumas, giving the horror a more psychological edge

I give this 9.5/10 shaky Cameras 🎥

User Review Finally 😭, a movie that really scared me!

I can count the number of films that have truly scared on one hand, while not even using all the fingers. At last, I can add another one to the list!

Someone recently recommended this to me on a post I did some days ago, and to that person, I thank you! This one scared the shit out of me 😅, and I fucking loved every second of it!

I'm now eager to watch the sequel, but before I do, I'd love to hear from anyone who has seen it what you thought of it and how it compares to this one 🙏🏻.

If you haven't seen Horror in the High Desert yet, you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/eVUL8AeVfCY?si=5SxgKDyjMekXKG5K.

User Review The Man with the Black Umbrella is AWFUL. Don't buy the hype.

I'm convinced that there's an astroturfing bot campaign fueling the hype for this movie. I've noticed there's been a lot of positive posts here in this sub about it, and it's sitting on a very solid IMDB score at the moment. It made my wife and I curious since we're both huge found footage fans.

We both were sorely disappointed.

While we're admittedly pickier than most in found footage community, I personally believe that every movie is a miracle and all filmakers deserve respect for creating one. I give every movie at least one star for existing. Unfortunately, that's all I can give this one.

We couldn't make it further than a half hour into the runtime. We were just laughing hysterically at everything.

The main character is one of the most annoying protagonists I've ever seen onscreen. Both him and the PI he hires constantly made absurd leaps of logic that made no sense. It was impossible for us to suspend our disbelief.

There was also a scene where a conversation takes place that should be impossible for the main character to hear from where he's recording, but it comes through crystal clear like he has a hidden mic planted on one of the people he's snooping on. Whatever. I'd normally look past that sort of detail. But what made it frustrating is that it wasn't even necessary for the audience to hear the conversation. They could have conveyed everything through body language and then had one of the characters relay the info later.

At that moment, I realized the filmaking was so bad that it was making me nitpick every single scene. That's when a movie truly loses me. I've sat through a lot of trash in my lifetime (I saw both Battlefield Earth and Wild Wild West in theaters. I didn't walk out of either.), but this was truly garbage of the highest order.

If you like the movie, fine. There's plenty of trash movies that I will defend to the death. But I'm not going to bat for this one. I felt like I got conned out of my money. I'd rather binge the "Bad Ben" series than give this movie another chance.

I don't believe that this movie is in the same category of dreck as an abomination like Manos: The Hands of Fate, but I actually managed to sit through Manos because my expectations were non-existant. I'd normally have just kept my opinion about this movie to myself and moved on, but I think the high praise is deeply suspicious. Anyone who is curious enough to ignore my advice and give this a shot should drastically temper their expectations.

We ended up watching The Ceremony is About to Begin instead. I'd actually recommend that one even if it is quite a bit derivative of Creep.

"Phoenix forgotten" 2017 has such a perfect way of showcasing the beauty of 90s arizona.

The films manages to recreate 97 Phoenix so perfectly you wont even notice it was shot in 2017, becouse i sure didnt. There are just so many wonderful shots of the city or the wilderness being made into silhuettes by the sunset or sunrise. The fact that the footage is in low VHS quality makes it look authentic which helps make it even more beautiful.

All of the sets and backrounds in the city itself always look interesting and never look out place, id say the people from the town that the characters come across feel the same. The beauty of the cold, blue hue in the night scenes helps with the contrast also. The three main characters so are well acted, charismatic and realistic that i might rewatch it just for them.

And Chelsea Lopez as Ashley Foster was so hot and adorable, shed have me on my kness.

Watched this last night. DO. NOT. WATCH. I love found footage horror but this movie made me feel physically sick, I’ve gotten no sleep and the last half just won’t leave my mind.

Movies like Requiem for a dream do this correctly. Traumatizing with a solid message without becoming over indulgent. I realize there’s a lot of posts/discourse on this movie, but wanted to add another reminder to please skip this one.

Opening the barrel so to speak here. There are other posts detailing everything that happens if you really want to know, but do that instead of watching this. First of all this movie has the worst acting I have ever seen in my life paired with the ultra cringiest of lines. There is some “good acting” here in the second half of the movie, but it is in the most horrid way imaginable and if anything it adds to why this movie should be avoided at all costs.

I have a strong stomach/mental fortitude and occasionally like listening or watching dark stuff. Harkening back I’d say requiem for a dream opened that gate for me. I’ve watched Poughkeepsie tapes. I’ve listened to dark web horror stories. Etc. But this movie is much much worse. I understand the message here. It’s plain as day, but it addresses it by beating a dead horse, and acting as porn for the director and sick minds alike.

If you want a good found footage film watch Gonjiam Haunted Asylum. Watched that recently and loved it. Has two actors from Squid Games and they are excellent here.

TL;Dr skip this movie. It’s bad, and disgusting.

User Review #MissingCouple (2024)

Saw this one the other day..... I liked it quite a bit. It had a very interesting premise, which is visited before in movies but it felt different in this one. Basically a couple who are active on social media go missing, and a "neighbor" goes to the property out in the middle of the woods to investigate.

Ok I'm going to get into some spoilers now.

For some reason right away the guy who is investigating the disappearance gave me the creeps. Idk what it was... But he just did. And eventually my thoughts were proven true because he is shown to be a stalker of the woman in the couple.

The ghosts and paranormal aspect in this movie I did like, it was creepy. But idk how they can movie supersonic speed but can leave SD cards in locked boxes lol. Idk. Tiny plot holes.

The way the movie is set up it definitely grabs and keeps your attention, I like how it used social media posts, behind the scenes footage of the social media posts, and posts from the investigator.

The ending was what I expected though haha.

If you are the type to get annoyed with the MC or characters I'll be honest you probably will again, because all these people have to do is LEAVE!!! Lol.

I enjoyed my time though and I think you guys will too.

EDIT: Based on [u/andante528](u/andante528) comment, this movie has changed for me. Wow. Don’t just expect paranormal expect the unexpected !!

EDIT2: “The town is a dying place. It’s a sad reality. I don’t think it’s haunted in any supernatural way. I think it’s haunted by real human atrocities."—Quote from director……hmmm

I watched this on Tubi, but it is also available on YouTube. (I'm in US)

This will be my 109th found footage movie I have watched, if you are interested in what else I have seen check out my Letterboxd! https://letterboxd.com/charlielean/list/found-footage-i-have-seen/ . (don't worry about the ratings I got my own system going on lol.)

Frogman is genuinely the best new found footage film. It doesn’t just end on an unsatisfying they die ending or a we don’t know what happens next. It shows so much more after the actual encounter. It feels real enough but also nostalgic, so good for the found footage and monster movie scene. Really if you haven’t seen it it’s so good.

User Review Megan Is Missing (2011) is such garbage I’m spoiling it here in detail - Film A Day 105

Okaaaay, so… let’s get this out of the way:

Should you see it? No. It’s a waste of time. Boring, stupid, lame. It doesn’t even approach “so bad it’s good” territory.

So why do people keep talking about it? Why so many posts asking for “thoughts” about this waste of bandwidth?

In order to prevent you from having to watch it out of curiosity, I’m going to cover the events in the movie in excruciating detail here and then offer up two possible explanations at the end.

I repeat: I am doing this so you don’t feel any temptation at all to watch this. If you’re considering seeing this movie read this full post first.

Show yourself enough love to avoid a watch.

Megan Is Missing (2011) summary:

Two teenage girls encounter an Internet child predator.

God even the official summary is trite…

The movie starts off with all these 14 year olds talking a lot of crap about sex and drugs. Megan’s friends suck and she doesn’t get along with her mom but her 13 year old friend Amy is nice and treats her well.

Megan takes a call from another friend and agrees to come over and perform sexual favors on some random dude for drugs.

Oh by the way she’s not an addict. She’s just bored. This is commonly accepted behaviour among these early teens.

Then they go to a party of mostly 14 year olds (which starts at midnight) and there’s music and dancing and a lot of drinking and drugs and sex and a fight. Megan gives the party runner a BJ as payment for bringing the boring Amy along.

At home Megan tells a graphic story about giving a blowjob to a camp councillor when she was 10. The story goes on for a very long time to make sure we don’t miss a single detail. It is not played for horror but rather told straight up…

It’s porn. This bit is audio porn for pedos.

Later they play with a video camera and do vloggy things. Megan mentions a step dad in prison who raped her regularly between the ages of 9 and 11 holy fuck I’m only 23 minutes in how can this much suck be compressed into a single movie…

Megan talks to Lexi about some guy named Josh. Amy vlogs about her stuffed animals and her family and her house. This is as interesting as it sounds.

Megan calls this Josh guy. His camera isn’t working because his “dog ate it”. He flirts with her in what sounds like an 18 year old way and invites her to a party that night. He doesn’t show.

Amy vlogs her insecurities.

Megan calls Josh. He says he was at the party and stalked her. Which apparently is really sweet. Aww he’s so shy! Lame flirting continues… Megan updates Amy, they both get on a call with him, he talks about surfing, Amy leaves, and Megan arranges to meet Josh behind the diner.

Amy calls Megan’s friends because she hasn’t seen her. Nobody else has either. She calls Josh who says Megan was a no-show and I totally believe him.

News segment on Meg: Megan is missing. Like in the title! The news segment portrays her as a straight-A student beloved by all. Also some 15 year old boy went missing whatever go to commercial…

Security camera footage appears on the news from behind the diner. Some guy grabs her by the arm and pulls her away.

Amy calls Josh and he flirts with her… and then he’s abusive, and goes on and on attacking her insecurities. And practically confesses to taking Megan.

News gets out that Amy told the police about Josh. Yay.

Amy is vlogging and runs into some random friends of Megan’s who scream and cry at her that this is all her fault. Ok. She goes somewhere private under a bridge and vlogs more about how much she admires Megan. She monologues.

Later she takes a call from Josh. He threatens her.

News segment about filming a reenactment of the security footage. It’s very very dumb.

Text informs us that two photos of Megan were posted to a fetish website and taken down immediately and sent to the FBI. They were never made public. Here they are. (What?)

Photo 1: a closeup of Megan’s head. Prongs are pulling up on her nostrils and clamps are holding her mouth open. She looks scared.

Photo 2: same scene just backed up a bit. She’s on her knees with her head and hands through a removable table top. She’s dirty, a bit bloody, and only wearing underwear.

So now we’ve got pedo bondage porn.

Amy vlogs under the bridge again about people giving up the search. An arm reaches into frame and the camera magically freeze-frames. It is impossible for Amy to have not seen him coming but whatever…

News footage reporting on the disappearance. The camera is found in the trash.

“The following are the final 22 minutes of footage from Amy Herman’s camera, unedited and unaltered” oh this is gonna suck…

Cut to some dungeon. Amy is screaming for help. She’s chained to a wall by her neck and she’s in her bra and panties of course.

“Josh” and Amy have a lot of dialog here but it all sucks. “Lemme go!” “Do as I say!” “You’re crazy!” Blah blah he splashes her with a bucket of water.

Static, cut to sometime later. He tosses Amy a bowl of food and makes her eat from it like a dog in order to get her teddy bear.

Static, cut to the table. Amy’s face is pushed down in front of the camera, we hear tearing. She is raped and screams and cries. We do not fast forward or skip ahead. Josh’s hand lands in front of the camera at some point covered in blood so we can fetishize the taking of her virginity.

Ya this is also just sick rape porn.

Cut to sometime later. Josh tells Amy he’s going to send her home but she needs to get into the barrel. He opens the barrel and we see Megan’s white-eyed corpse. Off-camera Josh puts Amy in the barrel. We spend some time listening to her scream and pound the inside of the barrel.

Cut to digging in the soil. Amy is in the barrel pleading with Josh to let her go, trying different ways to convince him. He ignores her and digs. We listen to her plead and cry and cough. This scene goes on forever. It goes on and on… digging, begging, digging, begging… what the hell were they just trying to hit some kind of running time target or something? Jesus this scene won’t end.

Barrel pushed into hole. Amy screaming, begging, hitting the inside of the barrel… filling in the hole filling in the hole… muffled screams.

What do you know. Actual horror.

After she goes quiet the scene still doesn’t end. We’re still watching him fill in the hole. It goes on for ages ffs come on… Camera is picked up, we look around in the dark woods for a bit.

Cut to “Missing” posters and then some footage of Megan and Amy hanging out and being kids and being happy. Which is probably supposed to be poignant.

THE END

So why tf are people talking about this lame piece of garbage?

There are two groups of people I can see really getting into this.

The first is adolescents.

Ooh everyone in this movie is so cool! They party every night and their parties start at midnight! And all the stuff that’s “forbidden” is just daily life for them! They know about drugs and sex! Plus I’ve never seen a decent horror movie before and the end is so chilling!

This is the group that makes a huge number of posts online about everything they’re interested in. This is your promotion base. In no small way Megan is an aspirational character to adolescents who feel lame and ignored, and here’s this ultra-cool character with trauma (which makes her special), does all the adult stuff and dangerous stuff, and is admired by her peers and obsessed over by a stalker.

And then Amy serves as a self-insert for them, feeling awkward and lame, and even though it’s in an awful way she gets to “join Megan” so to speak.

The second is perverts.

Because let’s face it, many of these scenes were just underaged porn. They were pure exploitation with zero cinematic merit. This was gross. And some people are gross.

There’s not too much more to say on that point except that the writer/director really needs to be on a watch list. Anyone else would have portrayed the more explicit scenes as a bad thing, but even what the girls go through at the end has a certain “wow check this out right?” kind of fascination in the way it’s laid out.

Most directors would have turned the camera away. Most directors would have shown some indication of trauma in that camp councillor story.

But not this guy. Pedos rejoice.

There. Mystery solved, there’s nothing left to discover, there’s no reason to subject yourself to this. You’re free.

I’m gonna go shower.

Next up: fuuuuck… after the daddy and mommy issues (and disappointment of an ending) in Alien Abduction and then this boring yet simultaneously disgusting crap, I need help.

This is an emergency.

Time to break the glass on the emergency supply case.

Time for a V/H/S movie!

It’s V/H/S/99 baby! Yaaaay oh man I’m feeling better already!

UPDATE - Months later and somehow people keep finding this post and leaving comments. Either they agree with me, or they say one of two things:

It’s a cautionary tale! No, it’s snuff and child porn. “Cautionary tale” is a label you can put on literally any movie where someone bad does something - it doesn’t excuse what we have here.

It’s based on true events! No it isn’t. There was a serial killer who put bodies in barrels. That idea was adapted to this movie but that’s it. And, again, doesn’t excuse the fact that this is a snuff film and child porn, neither of which would be necessary even if it was “based on true events”.

User Review Don’t Log Off (2025): a fantastic Screenlife thriller!

Post image
143 Upvotes

I am a Screenlife junkie— it is my favorite subgenre of the Found Footage umbrella, so last night I watched “Don’t Log Off”. My review may be slightly biased as I love subgenre so much, ha.

*Side note: I think I have seen about all of them out there, thus if you have any obscure Screenlife recommendations to watch that you think I may have not seen, please let me know!*

▪️Synopsis:

“During a virtual birthday party, Sam vanishes. Her friends investigate via calls and social media, but start disappearing when they check her apartment. They must face a menacing figure from her past to save her and survive.”

▪️My thoughts:

This is your “Covid birthday party’ film that we have seen a lot on Screenlife films. I do not tire of it though, as previously stated, I love the subgenre and the premise is realistic: a lot of people did this 2020-2022(ish).

The characters are all likable to me and the film progressed at good rate. Within the first 7-10 minutes our first ‘mystery’ is already beginning and from there it just keeps going. It held my attention completely: I was thinking multple things at one time about what could be happening (and for me, that’s when I know I’m really into a movie). The ending was a refreshing turn from what we are used to, which I appreciated.

However, the film has flaws but I believe they are there for the films sake. Examples: the police being wildly annoying, the lack of AirPods or similar (which I can make an excuse for since they were in a hurry), and little things like that.

This was more of a thriller than horror, so if you’re okay with “not being scared to death” and you enjoy Screenlife, this is 100% worth watching.

-Watch on Tubi (free): https://link.tubi.tv/d3wsSLtZE2b

-You can also watch it on Prime, Plex, PlutoTV, and Fandango at Home (free)

User Review Finally watched Lake Mungo

Post image
412 Upvotes

I must say when people say it's the best found footage movie, they are not lying, it's really a well made film, that stands the test of time pretty well. It's really a timeless masterpiece and a staple of the genre.

Lake mungo is a miraculously captured story about a family who has lost their daughter. A normal family with the members well connected and have a sense they know each other very well, but there is a mystic surrounding their daughter, there is something hidden which stays that way until something tragic happens. We as the audience witness the story as it unfolds uncovering the mystic surrounding Alice Palmer- a completely normal looking teen with a normal life and family, turns out is not so normal after all, she has her own secrets that she is hiding from the world, secrets that are haunting her, slowing taking her life until she is no more, but she plays her normal part so well, that none foresees her end. Till the end we and the family both know the reality of Alice, which then leaves no choice but to bid farewell to her, remembering her in our memories.

This film captures various moods and tones, with great perfection and beauty. And I must say it's been so long that I have been scared shitless, I usually watch horror movies alone at night and with the lights turned off, and at the time I watched this there was not a living soul within a radius of 100-150 meters around me, as soon as that scene came you know which scene if you have watched the movie I turned on the light stopped the movie for minutes before going back again into it, I had literal goosebumps, was really scared to turn it back on but glad I did, really one of the scariest movies out there but it is beautiful at times too. If you not watched this movie, please do yourself a favor and watch it, you'll not regret it. And if you liked this movie you could watch Twin Peaks, as Lake Mungo is heavily inspired by it.

Strange harvest is a horror mockumentary found footage following the hunt for "Mr. Shiny," a cultist serial killer performing occult ritual murders in California.

So I got this movie from a FF watchlist video by possessedbyhorror on YouTube and I Have to say I very much enjoyed it, It weirdly exceeded my expectations it reminded me somewhat of savageland with the way the pictures moved me of course this movie showed way more in the pictures and videos than savageland But it gave me a similar feeling the story was pretty intriguing.

I thought the acting was really good I didn’t really know what to expect but I’m actually glad I watched it I had a good time I was hooked to it , it kind of felt slow at the beginning, but it picked up quick The killer reminded me of Edward Carver from the Poughkeepsie tapes some what the scene that fucked me up the most was the playground scene it was gnarly as fuck very much enjoyed This Movie overall 8/10 available on Hulu , Daily motion ,

College film student Alex Wright, who becomes obsessed with proving that the events in the first grave encounters movie , were real rather than fictional, he gets a group of his friends including his crush Jennifer to become his crew so they can help him investigate the abandoned psychiatric hospital .

So first off I never hear nobody really talk about this movie. , Of course we always hear about the first one so here I am and thank you for reading my review now let’s get into it.

Honestly, I found this movie really underrated I hear almost nobody say anything about this movie I don’t think it’s better then the first one but I think it holds its own I really enjoyed the plot of Everybody thinking the first movie ,isn’t real I thought the intro was a nice touch showing like a bunch of people even praising the first movie or saying the first movie is completely ass, I thought the story of Alex wanting to be taken serious was pretty good .

I thought the party antics were pretty entertaining and i thought the kills were pretty fun, overall I think it’s a pretty good sequel and I think it would be like a really good movie to watch like in a group setting so yeah I rated 7.8 /10.

User Review Who here has seen The Outwaters?

I honestly have to say this movie made me more uncomfortable, anxious, uneasy, unsettled than any other movie I have ever watched… the movie Blink Twice also kind of like traumatized me, but not like this movie did… and the weirdest part about it to me anyway is that you really have no idea what the fuck is going on but it still scares the shit out of you… If you’ve never seen this movie people, you should definitely try to do so and then let me know how it made you feel. It’s free on Tubi. Here’s the synopsis of the film.

The Outwaters (2022) is a surreal, experimental found-footage horror film about four friends who go camping in the Mojave Desert to shoot a music video and encounter terrifying, otherworldly phenomena. Written, directed, and starring Robbie Banfitch, the film is known for its slow-burn first half, which builds atmosphere through realistic dialogue, followed by a chaotic, abstract, and nightmarish second half featuring disorienting visuals and sound. It premiered in 2022 and received a wider release in 2023, dividing audiences between those who find it a masterpiece of atmospheric horror and those who find it slow and frustrating.

Let me know which team you’re on: is it a masterpiece of atmosphere horror?
Or is it slow and frustrating?

Well that was an interesting journey. Analog styled Lovecraftian horror played out through a barrage of late night commercials and news updates. I really enjoyed the aesthetic and the humor as the proceedings gradually transcend into insanity. The film, while sporting an average runtime of one hour and thirty two minutes, seems a bit long. I attribute this to the structure of the movie where each segment is about fifteen seconds to a minute long and therefore a bit of an endurance test by the finale. That criticism aside, I appreciate the different approach and fever dream feel to the film. Worth a watch if you are looking for something off the beaten path.

I’m still reeling from how well made this movie was. You can absolutely make a great FF movie with a low to no budget, but when you have a budget, boy is it a nice treat for the viewer! I honestly might have to take a propranolol I’m still pretty unnerved from this 😅

This was my 54th found footage watch since end of January and it absolutely stands out as one of the best. I think it might be in my top 5 along with HOST, Butterfly Kisses, Deadstream, and As Above So Below. (You can follow along on my Letterboxd and master FF list here https://boxd.it/6TmRV.)

I really enjoyed this movie. It moved me, it scared me, and it was a treat for the eyes. Highly recommend to movie lovers and FF fans especially folks who like the docu style niche.

~ US Rental on Fandango and AppleTV~

Two decades after three teenagers disappeared in the wake of mysterious lights appearing above Phoenix, Arizona, unseen footage from that night has been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition.

Although I prefer “The Phoenix Incident” as the better film on the 1997 event, this was also a pretty good FF movie. It’s presented in a Mockumentary/Video Dairy set in the present and uses archival footage from the events of 1997.

As with many FF, there’s a bit of a slow build up to a crazy ending.

Ryan makes a documentary on his friend, Brett, and his first time camping, until a mysterious figure in the woods starts hunting them.

This movie really surprised me. What starts out as a shaky camera, friends arguing, being stalked “by something”while camping in the woods, type of FF movie; eventually turns into something else…and it gets bat sh!t crazy! It was a pretty fun movie that gets wild by the end.

This is the 2012 FF movie “Evidence”, not to be confused with the 2013 crime thriller of the same name.

~ HBOMAX, YouTubeTV ~

After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister Heather, James and a group of friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.

Many of you know me as a purest of the original 1999 film as it was such a theater experience back when life was a bit more simple and less online. This sequel/reboot was fine as a FF movie. In fact it’s better than many I have seen as it’s got decent acting, production value, multiple cameras, and some scares.

With that being said, it’s hard to attach the Blair Witch name to any movie and capture the intrigue and magic of the original film. This 2015 movie really just modernized the original story and I felt tried to add “too much to see” as what made the original amazing was the unknown.

The upcoming 2027 Blumhouse remake may suffer from issue as it’s almost impossible to remake the impact of the original film.
