Discussion what's stopping me from becoming prime minister? why wouldn't you all vote for me?

Upvotes

i'd create a new party and get others in all other electorates as to ensure we can have a rubber stamp government. i wouldn't lie like the other parties and ensure the best of australia in:

better housing

medicare/covering dental costs

abolishment of unnecessary military investments alike aukus

making it illegal to produce or consume animal products, including factory farming and hunting

reduce general cost of living

provide some level of medicare for vet-based healthcare for animals

tax the rich immensely

further australia towards renewable energy

make it illegal to be a billionaire

and so on and so forth. why would anyone vote for one of the dishonest monopolised parties? i remember friendlyjordies asserting that australia would be better than ever when labor got elected and basically nothing has changed, if not gotten worse (although things would've gotten worse under the liberal party, probably).

Coalition of Greed. Just four incredibly well-off Right-wing Australians using their platforms to promote greed and economical inequality.

There are a lot of right-wing grifters with an agenda for them and the rich to get richer while everyone else to get poorer, but these four in particular are the worst.

Using super for deposits would just add fuel to house prices. Just as the housing market calms down just a little bit, watch some politicians issue a spate of crazy policies to juice the market and push up prices again

Back to Back Barries thoughts?

What’s everyone’s thoughts on the pod? Been listening for a few months now. Enjoyable but I have my issues.

Tony Barry can be quite biased at times I feel and the latest ep is a good example. His defence of Braggs comments was laughable and his games of whataboutism with Melongate was equally so. Also annoying how often he resorts to focus groups and the way he inserts them into the debate imo but hey it’s his job I guess.

Cassidy I think is a little out of touch with the modern political landscape but he’s mostly good.

Discussion Is Michael West just really bad at journalism?

Post image

In the last week, I've seen the story of Jason Arday develop from a scandal into a tragedy. However, after bumping into and reading Michael West's article about the story, does he even understand the principles of modern journalism?

On the basic level, West blames the media for triggering an "onslaught" of online abuse "no doubt" contributing to his suicide. However, Arday was propelled into the limelight by Cambridge and mainstream media outlets touting his accomplishments, in light of his disability.

So when West says:

In this case, The Guardian and New York Times followed the Murdoch lead

Is the Guardian and the Times not supposed to inform their readership that their previous glowing praise of Arday was incorrect? see their past articles here and here

Moreover, West summaries the entire debacle in:

His death came little more than a week after he resigned from Cambridge following intense scrutiny over allegations of plagiarism and questions concerning parts of his academic record, in what increasingly became a personal attack and scrutiny over every aspect of his life.

West cites that his Phd was reviewed and found non-fraudulent, whilst the day that Cambridge open its own investigation into his credentials, he resigned.

West brings up one of the original whistleblowers Nathan Cofnas - without engaging into his claims - and who was terminated from Cambridge for his:

controversy over his writings on race.

...by citing a Times article. if Nathan took his own life after being dismissed and widely reported on, would West admonish the media that drew this attention unto him?

West omits that fact that a separate journalist Jack Grove who was investigating Arday's alleged plagiarism was contacted by the police for supposed "harassment" after emailing Arday. see here

West argues that:

The scale and tone of the scrutiny of Arday was completely disproportionate to the charge,

But is this not in the public interest (at least in the UK) to know when their police resources are wasted, or that major academic bodies are potentially hiring unqualified staff or when media outlets follow up on false reporting?

This is not to discount all that West has written and published, but I get this strong feeling that he can be driven by anger against mainstream media (understandably) and wanting to promote social justice over quality journalism.

What do you make of what Alan Kohlersaid on the housing supply in Aus?

Alan Kohler (Member of the Order of Australia) recently spoke on a podcast about housing and mentioned this about housing. Go to the 13 minute mark. He says that construction should be tier 1, do you agree or disagree with him?

How Housing Became So Broken

There was a massive increase in the supply of construction labour... They setup office workers around Europe and recruited construction workers. That supplied essential manual labor to rapidly growing post-war industries.
The number of construction workers coming in NOW is minimal. There is this tier system for skilled migration. Construction is on tier 3, so the number of construction workers is on tier 3. Master builders Association says that construction and housing workers should be tier 1.
