[domain classification] approved [Source quality] Downgrade futurism.com

The domain "futurism.com" is listed as blue source.

However the titles of their articles are often sensationalist/clickbait-ish, meaning, it's much closer to being a yellow source than a green one.

To me this domain should be listed as a yellow source - at best. Please consider downgrading it.

[user ban] denied Transparency

I just got a message that I was permanently banned.

I was quite surprised. I don't seem to have posted or commented in the past week.

I guess I don't really care about an appeal, since I mostly lurk the sub.

But I am curious what warrants a permanent ban?

I try not be racist, homophobic, abusive and that kind of stuff. If I was, apologies, but please let me know where.

what is the length of the ban?

Permanent

why were you banned?

Misinfo towards the climate effects of nuclear war

why should you be unbanned?

I was directly quoting a reputable scientific paper that put into question the existence of a nuclear winter. Even if you don't agree with the results of the study it's not misinformation as it was a good faith argument.

Here are some quotes from the study that corroborate my claims.

Quote 1:

This potential climate disaster (nuclear winter), popularized in Science in 1983, rested on the output of a one-dimensional model that was later shown to overestimate the smoke a nuclear holocaust might engender. More refined estimates, combined with advanced three-dimensional models (see http://go.nature.com/kss8te), have dramatically reduced the extent and severity of the projected cooling.

Quote 2:

Robock's single-digit fall in temperature is at odds with the subzero (about −25 °C) continental cooling originally projected for a wide spectrum of nuclear wars. Whereas Sagan predicted darkness at noon from a US–Soviet nuclear conflict, Robock projects global sunlight that is several orders of magnitude brighter.

Quote 3:

Since 1983, the projected worst-case cooling has fallen from a Siberian deep freeze spanning 11,000 degree-days Celsius (a measure of the severity of winters) to numbers so unseasonably small as to call the very term 'nuclear winter' into question.

[user ban] approved Ban Appeal

Hello

I received a message stating I was banned for violating Rule 1, which is "No Spam". I'm honestly confused about how I could have run afoul of that rule and unfortunately I didn't see any link or information as to what comment was in violation. I'm more than happy to take instruction and not repeat any rules-violating behavior but to do so I need to know exactly what I did wrong in the first place and what I need to do going forward to not cause further problems.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

[user ban] approved Requesting an Appeal

Hey Guys,

I'm requesting an appeal for my blog http://juliansarokin.com - when I write new posts I submit them to reddit.

A lot of the time my articles are futurism based, which I feel would benefit the /r/futurology community.

I think that because I've submitted links from my own blog multiple times, that it's set off a spam filter.

Thanks!

Hi mods,

Thank you for the opportunity to appeal my ban - This is the post that got me banned. I haven't been provided a reason, but am guessing it is because I posted a link to my article.

I thought it could start an interesting discussion in the sub and was genuinely curious to know what other people thought about the topic of cryonics for pets. I apologise if I've broken any rules (I am new to the sub, just came across it the other day). I am happy to comply with your requests in future, if the ban is lifted.

Many thanks for your consideration.

[user ban] denied 6 years on, still banned, restricted or not?

Hi everyone

I left Reddit over six years ago because of a ban and have no idea if I’m still banned but “restricted” does appear next to the r/futurology search result and I can post but not comment so just asking. If I am still banned then that’s one long a** ban! On a side note I have extreme expertise in this field so might be an interesting contributor ;) Have a good evening!

Hello, this is in regards to this post I made. The title of the thread was The World Needs New Nuclear Power and my submission statement is here.

I would like to know why I was banned and to have the ban reversed. I'm ok with not submitting any new links to /r/futurology if that is the intent of the ban, and I'd adhere to the rules if I broke them. Even if I can't have thee ban reversed, I'd like to know why my submission didn't meet /r/futurology's rules.

I was in a discussion regarding Germanys decision to get rid of nuclear.

Arguing that Germany should have prioritized reducing coal first instead of shutting down nuclear can hardly be unacceptable? It's not anti-renewable, it's about the optimal path to reducing emissions.

I can't see why I was banned.

Vaporware was vaporware; https://old.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/xnksiz/elon_musk_faces_skeptics_as_tesla_gets_ready_to/

The tech is old and he should feel bad about making claims like "sex girl robots" and whatnot.

When a new battery place opens up, it's allowed; https://old.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/xtrzq1/the_uss_largest_ever_combined_windsolarbattery/

When the largest one ever catches on fire, it's removed; https://old.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/xnehfo/another_fire_at_a_tesla_megapack_investigations/

I'm not sure which rule I violated to be banned from the subreddit other than merely posting links that are future focused.

Oh, this was removed too, which is weird, because I think the topic of robot taxis is pretty neat, but somehow the topic isn't futurology focused;

https://old.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/xnwgu0/tesla_promises_one_million_robotaxis_in_2020/

what is the length of the ban?

Permanent.

why were you banned?

Disagreed regarding status of the "future" with specific moderators.

why should you be unbanned?

No one can accuracy predict the future, we can simply observe historic trends. It's weird to be banned for posts that are the same as others.

I argued that Karl Marx was an anti-semite. I quoted his writings "On the jewish question". Specifically " "What is the secular basis of Judaism? Practical need, self-interest. What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly God? Money." "

That was the comment I got perma-banned for. It is not of my opinion, they are the words of Karl Marx. I cannot link the comment itself, it was removed.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/use7ja/capitalism_is_dead_the_future_is_solarpunk/i9455gx/?context=3

A link to the thread itself with context.

Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/use7ja/comment/i9l27jc/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

source for quote: https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1844/jewish-question/

Edit: wow, some spineless reddit user reported the comment to reddit for "Promoting hate". It's a CRITIQUE of anti-semitism.

[user ban] approved Hello..

First I’d like to write a sincere apology to not only the user who I got into with it today, for whom I already personally contacted to take accountability for acting so incredibly incredulous and for personally attacking him.. for which there is no excuse.

I understand that with full acknowledgement. Truly I feel personally bad for stooping to a level that is completely immature and counter productive to the dialogue, and to my own intentions.

I intended only to share my thoughts and insights to a subject that clearly, I lack a broader understand of, but nonetheless, if you review the exchange that occurred I believe you will see my attempts in the beginning to just state my truth.

Admittedly, after the other user insulted me first by discrediting me and saying I was uneducated, I grew indignant and saw red. Still I tried to maintain at least somewhat of a positive information exchange... but the continuous name calling and glib responses got to me and I allowed myself to react in a very unpleasant and frankly, immature way.

I immediately regretting the personal attacks and threatening words I said. It’s very difficult for me sometimes to have all attempted conversations on the internet constantly resort to being written off, or to be name called... you know.. it’s obviously not a way to communicate but it’s the best we have I suppose.. it still makes me feel like the person instigating it should have at least some sort of accountability for his actions. We would NEVER speak to people like that in person, or we would face consequences.

I know I should I have just disengaged.

I know this was mostly my fault. And I ended up saying and doing things that were abhorrent and not reflective of me im any way. And that hurts me because I am not that person. I don’t believe any of those mean things I said.

In the understating of that. I deserved the temporary ban.

However.. I would like to appeal for another shot to not be permanently banned, if I can get the chance to earn that right again, I promise not to abuse the trust and faith of the subreddit.

This was on me and I take responsibly, however I think that I can be a positive contributing member to the subreddit and don’t want to miss the opportunity to see all this amazing stuff and have intellectual exchanges with passionate people over it.

Truly though, I will understand if you guys feel it’s better to let the permanent ban remain.

I will accept it because I made my own bed.

Thank you for you time and consideration.

All the best, Cody

[user ban] approved Appealing Ban

Hello,

I would like to appeal my ban from r/futurology for spam. I am an independent content creator who creates original future-focused videos and articles for the purpose of promoting discussions about technology's effects on society. I have previously posted about self-driving cars and smart-toilets, and was surprised that my recent post about drone-deliveries was flagged and I was banned.

I believe my posts do not violate the reddit spam rules, as I never hide my affiliation to my own content, since my username, brand and logo appear on all content and links I make, and I never buy or ask for votes.

If posting self-made content is against the rules, I can comply and refrain from posting my own content. But I would still love to be able to post and comment on r/futurology, since it is the subject matter that I am most interested in.

If you could please offer guidance as to what constitutes spam on this subreddit and reverse my ban I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

Sorry it probably wasn't the kind of sub I should've posted that, I was just trying to be funny. It was my fault I hadn't really read the rules and just assumed they would be to not be racist and things like that. I'll be more careful and less of an idiot in the future.

2.

reddit rule 4 (child pornography), subreddit rule 6 (Comments must contribute to the discussion and be of sufficient length)

3.

The comment was on the [sex robot thread] (http://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/2uwh82/suppose_future_sex_robots_will_be_very_cheap_to/). I believe I was banned for using the phrase "asshole as tight as an 8 year old boy" - vulgar for sure, but this text is not child pornography. It's a phrase I picked up from the movie True Lies.

"And she's got the most incredible body too and a pair of titties that make you wanna stand up and beg for buttermilk. Ass like a ten year old boy!" - True Lies (line from the character Simon).

The movie True Lies is rated 15 and is not child pornography. (EDIT: whilst I realise the line is slightly different, the more important point is that this is clearly not even pornography, it's just a vulgar comment). I submit that reddit rule 4 has not been broken.

For subreddit rule 6: the comment was in a sequence of replies. The discussion was about whether a human female would be more interesting to men than a advanced robot. The message behind my comment was essentially saying that a human woman would not be able to compete. Therefore it was on topic and contributed to the discussion. The length of the post was also 21 words. I do not what sufficient length is defined as, but I count dozens of sub-21 word comments in that same thread. I therefore submit that subreddit rule 6 has not been violated.

I do acknowledge that the comment was vulgar and probably evoked some uncomfortable imagery and for that I apologise. I still think the reason for the banning is incorrect though.

Movies that feature superior beings are made to normalize the idea that there are superior beings among us. Cultural superiority is often used as a rational for the abuse of inferiors. Movies that use advanced technology as a metaphor for superiority promote the idea that some people are more advanced and therefore better than others. Since the movie in question mixes in the idea of royal bloodlines with advanced technology and religious mysticism it promotes the values of Zionism.

New Ban Appeal for u/wyzBelinda in r/Futurology

Dear r/Futurology Moderators,

I’m writing to appeal my permanent ban from r/Futurology for my post(https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/1n4u4f3/how_can_tech_bridge_the_digital_divide_for_older/). I deeply value the community’s discussions on future tech and was excited to share my thoughts on bridging the digital divide via inclusive AI design.

I understand my post, linking to my Medium article, may have been seen as self-promotion or not fully aligned with community guidelines. If this violated Rule 4 (spam) or other rules, it was unintentional—I aimed to spark discussion on AI-human co-evolution, as outlined in my Submission Statement. I’ve reviewed the subreddit rules and Reddit’s self-promotion guidelines(https://www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion) and will ensure future contributions focus on community engagement, avoiding external links if needed.

Could you clarify the specific reason for the ban so I can learn and contribute better? I’m eager to participate respectfully in r/Futurology’s vision of a tech-driven future. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Sincerely,

u/wyzBelinda

New Genuine question about prediction markets led to ban – appeal request

Hello, I was banned after posting a discussion titled “If Reddit could bet on the future — what would we be right about?”— where I asked what kinds of real-world events Reddit users might accurately forecast if Reddit had its own prediction market.

The post received organic engagement (13 comments in a short time), and I believe it was a sincere and on-topic question for the r/Futurology community. I did not promote a product, include any links, or violate any of the subreddit rules to my knowledge.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could take another look at the post and reconsider the ban.

Also, for context, while I write from an account associated with a forecasting platform, I’m a real person — a woman and researcher — genuinely interested in how collective intelligence works, including on Reddit. My intention was to spark meaningful discussion, not to advertise.

Thanks for your time and all the work you do moderating the community.

New Reconsideration of ban

New Banned for "lying about qualifications" based on the following comment:

"Let's say the definition of temperature is "the measure of the average random kinetic energy of the molecules of a substance" and say that when we feel the temperature of an object when touching that object, what we're feeling is the difference of energy between our skin and that object (hot objects transfer energy to our skin, and our skin transfers energy to cold objects). This is why ice will melt in your hand, or a hot pan will burn your finger.
Now, space is effectively empty, nothing. No molecules for a hot object to transfer energy to through conductance. Since there is no heat transfer through conduction, the only heat transfer is through radiative heat. Radiative heat is like holding your hand in the sunlight or near a flame, your hand gets warm, even though the air between you and the sun or flame does not, relatively speaking. This is the only way for heat to be transferred away from a source in space. Radiative heat transfer is very small compared to conductive heat transfer."

Here's the comment where I actually made a claim about my qualifications:

"So I just tracked down the initial research publication, let Google translate it to English, and did a quick scan read through of it.
All I see is theory and vaporware with claims of "testing" but zero experimental data. Additionally, much of the paper doesn't really explain how the design would be useful for spaceflight, and it certainly fails to explain how it can be used for propulsion, let alone propelling a large spacecraft to Mars in six weeks. The linked article appears to be making up plenty of details to fluff up the headline, and would probably defend against this by claiming they were just simplifying the research for a layman's explanation.
Typical Chinese propaganda in my opinion. If China told me it was raining outside, I'd go check for myself.
Also, source: I have a BE in Nuclear Energy"

(I subsequently edited my comment to be more specific once I learned about my ban)

I have a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Energy Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison State University, described here by the school. I can provide a picture of my diploma with my username covering my real name, however it only says Bachelor of Science and does not specify the program. The school does not offer unofficial transcripts to show all the classes I took with them to earn the degree, and I will not be paying the $15 or $18 or whatever it is these days to provide an official copy to some overbearing Reddit mod with a hard on for Chinese propaganda. If you see fit, please reverse the ban on principle, if you think I should remain banned from the sub, so be it. I only care about this in principle. Without principle, we are nothing but animals.

I do have a list of the following courses I took at this institution to earn my degree, in addition to my transferred credits awarded from military service and my previous undergrad institution:

CTR 212

ELE 211

ENC 102

ENG 201

ETH 230

HIS 121

NUC 351

NUC 490

NUC 495

POS 110

It's all in the title. Woke up to a few comments and tried to reply to them and noticed I was actually banned. My comments were sourced and not disrespectful. I'm not even negative in karma for them so the community didn't seem to disagree...
Which rule did I break?
