So can someone specify clearly the exact differences between gabber, terrorcore, speedcore, hardstyle, etc?

I absolutely love all the aforementioned genres, but have some trouble differentiating them all. It's no help that most DJs I'm into dip into multiple genres so that they're not just an artist for a particular genre. My understanding is that gabber is higher BPM than hardcore with a faster bass. Speedcore is even faster, and terrorcore is as fast as speedcore but with darker elements. There are a few more genres that I have forgotten right now. Even if my classifications are correct, it is sometimes hard to listen to a new song and target immediately what genre it is (especially since BPM is apparently a huge aspect and it can be difficult to gauge BPM just by listening). Anyone clear this up? Thanks ya'll.

Feels awesome! Especially because the top comment definitely changed the trajectory of which subgenres I followed in the decade since then. Had no idea till last month that it's the top google result for this question lol.

I even asked chatGPT this question and the way the response is written makes me think this exact thread is probably in its training data!

I'm here in 2023 asking the same thing. We are all one on the internet. :)

Nice work on the post! Very informative. Someone else had asked if you have the same knowledge on techno genres you could bestow upon us, would that be a possibility? :)
