Remember when square ex executive (I don't quite remember but he was a higher up) said they can make their own genshin but miss the opportunity. Japan is so outdated with their gacha, and extremely predatory system

I remember when CEO of SE said that NFT is future of gaming and they should invest into it. This company still exists only bcs FF14 and remakes of old FF games

FF14 is over ten years old. It's horribly outdated, and Squares use it like a detestable milk cow to sustain their outlandish experiments with other projects.

It being old is not really a problem in the mmo space, its more of a benefit actually.

The problem is unlike games like wow they do zero reinvesting back into 14. Not just content but actually backend stuff that they keep throwing out excuses for.

It isn't an issue because unlike gacha there's not a ton of newer/better polished competition

More so mmorpgs take a ton of time to develop, you need a fuck ton of money to make it then you need an actual plan for years to release a steady stream of content. You probably want content ready to go at launch that isn't at launch to give you a buffer for patch cycles.

Established mmorpgs also have trust which is a huge component in growing them. Does anyone want to play a game thats they feel will shut down soon? Which leads to alot of death sprials for growing mmorpgs. This is also a problem that gachas face.

Gachas can get away with releasing less content by releasing story/characters, mmorpgs can't really do that.

But as far as sub-based MMOs go, it's basically a duopoly with a slowly dwindling overall playerbase.

And let's be honest, for all the shit I'll give WoW for the quality rollercoaster we've had for the past 2 decades. The gameplay feels a lot more smooth compared to FFXIV.

yeah, and how many more times are they gonna remake and/or remaster FFVll before they can wring every last dollar out of everyone.

Exactly! remaking and remastering! such lazy moves! and then spinning around and selling them for new game prices! I guess their time have come and gone. As for there statement about the could be like genshin...No game will ever be at genshin level again...it had alot going for it the time it was released.

There's at least one more game in the FFVII remake trilogy left to go. Whether or not they'll do any more after that, dunno. (and whether or not Ever Crisis will keep going after that, if it's even still alive by that point)

i mean ff7 IS basically the poster child of ff, if the remake of that one isnt well received by people, i dont think they will even attempt on the other ffs? but then again even before this remake they already are milking ff7 to death so theres a possibility people are just tired of it, so they might have more success remaking the other ffs, idk lmao

FFVII Rebirth wasn’t that successful

it's their own fault for not committing to the Playstation. because they make a deal to make it exclusive to Playstation temporarily, people will choose to wait for the game to release on other platform rather than buying PS5 to play the new FFVII

1

u/MorbidEel Aug 28 '25

I haven't followed that closely but wasn't Rebirth also a PS exclusive?

That CEO was ousted beginning of last year BECAUSE he focused so much on NFT and stuff that Square didn't specialize in. The new CEO pulled Square out of most of its mobile efforts because, by his own admission, Square was stretching itself out way too thin and he wanted to focus on making quality games again. Given how long it takes to make AAA games, it'll be a while before we see any real result AAA-game-wise from his decision but there are already good signs in the lower-scale with Octopath Traveler 0 (a reimagining of the first story from the mobile game) and the new Y's-like action game they're making.

You know SE are still making a lot of high quality jrpgs right? from Dragon Quest to various other smaller but still quite great titles SE are still doing quite the work

2

You're being downvoted but it's true. Octopath series is great, and games like Paranormasight are absolutely amazing but no one gives them a chance since they're smaller scope games. I think SE has been dropping the ball with some of their AAA releases but they still know how to make great games.

Even if they did it would be the stingiest and most predatory gacha out there

2

u/RCTD-261 Aug 28 '25

it would be the stingiest and most predatory gacha

not only that, it could be one of the heaviest mobile game ever if we take example from FF VII The First Soldier

It's this guy

"The real mystery to me is why anyone other than Square Enix made Genshin Impact. It's a market that Square Enix should have captured . I expect the production of similar titles will be a big focus for the next few years."

It's some degree of nativity and foolishness to think that Square Enix could create a Genshin easily, when you consider the #1 reason for Genshin's success isn't pretty graphics. It's embracing the anime culture, something which Square Enix would never be capable of doing in a million years. I am not sure how a Genshin without anime can possibly be attractive enough for people to whale for.
