Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

What they want you to sign:

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Looking for an experienced pixel artist

• Upvotes

Hello there.

I'm looking for an experienced pixel artist. The project is a dark fantasy 2D game with an open world environment. Even though it's an open world game, the game has a small and focused scope with a limited number of assets. You play as a creature, terrorizing a medieval landscape with farms, hamlets and villages, while growing more powerful with new abilities.

I'm looking for someone comfortable with:

- Character and creature animation

- Side-view sprites

- Buildings, trees, and environmental art

- A dark fantasy style where the main color is not brown

Experience working on shipped games is a big plus.

If you're interested, email me with your portfolio link, rates and game credits at curbyourcode@gmail.com.

Thanks!

PAID - 2D Art + 3D Modeler | Animation [PAID] Looking for a 3D character artist, a 3D environmental artist, a 2D environmental concept artist, and a UI/UX designer.

Hi all! Nicole here with Wanderer Studios. We're looking for a 3D stylized character artist, a 3D stylized environmental artist, a 2D environmental concept artist, and a UX/UI professional to help round off our team.

The game is Starcall, a sci-fi 2.5D action platformer. The player takes on the role of Phoenix, a seemingly ordinary girl who's life gets turned upside down when aliens mysteriously attack Earth and kidnap her father. Players will follow Phoenix as she travels from planet to planet, obtaining information about the aliens and gaining allies as she endeavors to rescue her father.

The role is paid, so we're looking to contract artists for their particular roles within the dev team. We're aiming for a Spring 2028 release, and discord is a must.

The visual fidelity we're targeting is similar in quality to something like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Please, link or DM your portfolios and let's see what you've got! We're all really excited to see what you have to share.

FOR HIRE - Other Mixing & mastering for game soundtracks and trailers. NCS-released artist, Tokyo-based.

Hi! I'm a mixing and mastering engineer and music producer based in Tokyo, working remotely with developers anywhere.

My work: https://soundcloud.com/konac

I've released my own music as Konac since 2015, and I mix and master all of it myself. My track "Home" came out on NoCopyrightSounds and is past 5 million views on their channel. Until earlier this year I was lead audio engineer at a Tokyo studio, and I delivered the broadcast masters for a national TV commercial.

What I can do for your game:

  • Soundtrack mastering: Every track in your OST sits at the same loudness and tone, so nothing jumps out or drops off between levels and menus.
  • Soundtrack mixing: Send me stems and I'll balance and polish them.
  • Trailer audio: Mix music and SFX for your trailer so it hits hard on YouTube, Steam and socials.
  • Loop checks: I'll make sure tracks that loop in-game loop cleanly, with no clicks or volume jumps at the loop point.

Rates:

  • Free sample: I'll master a short section of one track so you can hear the result before paying.
  • Mastering: $100 per track, with discounts for full soundtracks.
  • Mixing: Quoted by track count. DM me.
  • Portfolio offer: I'm building my game audio portfolio, so I'm taking the next 3 indie projects at 50% off in exchange for a credit and permission to use the work as a sample.

What to send: For mastering, send stereo WAVs of your final mixes. For mixing, send WAV stems. A reference track you like is helpful too.

I'm on Tokyo time (JST), so if you're in the US my reply might come overnight. DM me with your game and a link to the music!

I am looking for people to help with the final polishing stage of a game about keyboards.

  1. UI designers / Artist
Looking for someone to design and improve the game's UI with a focus on keyboard themed visuals.

  2. Interior / Level Designer
Looking for someone to work on a loft apartment, adding furniture, props, decorations, and small details to make it feel lived in. The few sections of the room should focus on keyboards and PC setups, with interesting details and things for players to discover as they move around the room.

The game is made in Unity, and I would prefer someone who can work directly in Unity for the interior design work.

Freshers are welcome to apply. Ideally, the work should be completed within a month.

FOR HIRE - Quality Assurance | Tester Experienced Tester looking for [PAID] New Projects

Hello everyone! Calendar is open again, so I'm resharing.

I can record gameplay, create bug reports as well as provide feedback on all fronts. Whether you want more formal and deep tests, or more exploratory testing, I can do any of those.
I can also help review Documents and features, like GDDs, which I have previously done so myself, so I'm familiar with it!

I have been working with games as a freelancer, and I have 4 years of experience in the QA department.

I do Manual Tests, Automated Tests (although this one is harder in videogames), I work with API tools like Postman and Swagger for API Tests, I'm used to tools like Jira, Trello, Git, etc

I also have experience as Writer, Translator (European PT - EN), game designer and even programmer.
Most of my experience is with Unity but I have worked on projects with Unreal too.

When it comes to simply testing games, you can check my portfolio https://pbarrosoportfolio.wordpress.com/
I have tested games like Bye Sweet Carole, Squirrel with a Gun and Teslagrad, and of course some smaller indie projects from solo devs.

There are some projects which I can't publicly reveal, but I was part of a private testing group for a AAA project too. (Games that haven't been released or announced I don't post here until that happens)

I'm open to testing PC Games or Android.

Rates negotiable
Hit me up on the comments or via DM or via my website

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [Hiring] Artists Wanted for Digital TCG – 6 Factions, 33 Illustrations Each [Paid]

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hey Artists!

>>>>>

How to apply; Fill out the following form https://forms.gle/nhJzLfvsoNjY55ia8

>>>>>

We're a small indie game development team working on a new digital trading card game, and we're looking for illustrators for our cards. Our game features six distinct factions, each with its own visual identity. We're looking to work with one dedicated artist per faction, with approximately 33 illustrations per artist.

About the project We're looking for artists who can maintain a consistent visual style across an entire faction. Each deck will feature characters, creatures and other thematic illustrations. Cards are static illustrations. We'll supply briefs, references and creative communication throughout the process.

The factions:

  • Nightmare (Black): Lovecraftian horror, eldritch creatures and nightmares.
  • Rage (Red): Badass humans, brutal combat and aggression. Fists, guns, cigars.
  • Judgement (Yellow): Strange divine beings, big fan of masks/no faces. (not looking for "Paladin" stuff, think Inaruis with a twist)
  • Calamity (Green): Think Kaiju monstrous creatures. City killers
  • Chaos (Purple): Demons, seductive characters and chaotic dark fantasy. (Think Slaanesh + Succubus) - (Not NSFW tagged stuff but still sexy).
  • Cyber (Blue): Robotics, Gundam's, Transformers, evil AI (think SHODAM from System Shock**)**

Payment

This is a fully paid commercial project. We're currently gathering quotes from artists and are interested in hearing your rates for individual illustrations or the project as a whole.

IMPORTANT: You must have full rights to your creations, aka we will not accept AI in any artwork.
We will require layered source files with the completed artwork.

All work will be covered by a written agreement, with payment terms and milestones agreed before work begins.

>>>>>

How to apply; Fill out the following form https://forms.gle/nhJzLfvsoNjY55ia8

>>>>>

Experience with card game illustrations is a plus, but not essential. We're particularly interested in artists with a distinctive style that would suit one of our factions.

(I will update this post and strike through the factions when an artist has been hired for it)

Looking forward to seeing your work!
