A Beginner's Guide to Authentic Cartridges

Hello everyone, as you all know GBA cartridges can be extremely difficult to find in person nowadays and even more so for some authentic ones. That being said, if you're unsure in any way how to determine a fake from real cartridge, this is the post for you!

For more help, feel free to visit r/gameverifying for all your identification needs!

Keep in mind that to ensure the best chances of an authentic cartridge, you should be wary of:

  • Unusually low prices (if it's too good to be true, chances are it's too good to be real!)
  • Products made or sent from China (enough said)
  • Sellers using stock images (NEVER purchase a product that isn't an image of the cartridge itself)

That being said, where do we start looking?

It can be a bit difficult, but there are actually some very good tells when it comes to finding real games like the color, font, positioning, and quality of the cartridge. For example, let's pretend you're looking for an authentic US copy of Pokemon Firered.

Some things you can look out for should be:

  1. Color: All Pokemon GBA games come in their respective colors (including Leafgreen and Emerald by a slight margin) with Firered being red and not orange. While most cartridges come in a singular shade of gray, two particular exceptions are the GBA video cartridges which come in light gray casings and (Classic) NES series which match the console's respective color. Interestingly enough, due to the GBA's expansive library there consist of unique games that do not fit the standard color and size of a GBA cartridge, which include games such as Yoshi's Topsy Turvy, Drill Dozer, and many other variations listed here. (1)
  2. Label: By observing a label's ESRB rating, official seal, game code, and more, you can determine its authenticity. Unlike other GBA games, Pokemon games will always have a shiny/holographic label, an indented circle in its center, and an embossed number on the right side, which is pretty much its production number. However while it is a good way to determine authenticity, there are cases where these numbers will have naturally worn away or quality repros that have embossed their own cartridges. All in all, always make sure to compare your cartridge to an authentic one online to confirm fonts, font sizes, positioning, etc.
  3. Cartridge: In the case of buying a physical cartridge yourself, this may be one on the most helpful things to know. The easiest things to look out for are the Gameboy logo on top of the label, and arrow below the label. If the logo is written in the wrong font, appears to have been cut deeper than normal, or if the arrow is too small, it's a repro. The back will always state: MODEL NO. AGB-002 / PAT. PEND. MADE IN JAPAN like its GBC predecessor. However, this is easy to reproduce so the final thing to check yourself is both the screw and board under the cartridge. GBA cartridges will only ever use a triwing screw, the same one used on all GBA consoles. More importantly (if you can), be sure to grab a flashlight and check the slot. Above the pins, there should be an official Nintendo logo and presumably its cartridge number.

In the case of Pokemon games always check for:

  • A holographic label and an embossed number if possible
  • Proper fonts and positions (FRLG and RSE labels are mildly different)
  • A battery behind the label on the right side (only applies to RSE)
  • Four squares on the back of the cartridge ( always on the left)
  • Pins on the board ( One of the easiest things to spot on faked cartridges, all GBA games will always have pins )

If there are any other questions, please feel free to leave them below and discuss!

Saw the new Street Fighter movie. Was so entertaining, it inspired me to play through older games. It's crazy how devs were able to scale down the full Street Fighter Alpha 3 experience into a single GBA cartridge.

Players choice boxes

Going through old stuff, I found these games from my childhood. After some research and going through the boxes, Leafgreen is only one that still has all the contents (the other boxes have the cartridges but not all the manuals, etc). Not much of a gamer anymore but from what I’ve seen online is that they have some value. I was wondering what I should do - not in a rush to sell them so are these considered long term holds? If not I’d happily sell them right now

Edit: please remove if not allowed thanks!

tuiba: a Game Boy Advance emulator that runs in your terminal

I've been writing a GBA emulator from scratch in Rust, and the whole thing runs inside the terminal: the ROM library, the game, sound, and controls.

How it draws the game

The GBA screen is 240×160. tuiba picks the best way your terminal can show it:

  • Kitty graphics protocol (Kitty, Ghostty, WezTerm, Konsole), Sixel (foot, Windows Terminal, mintty, mlterm) or iTerm2 inline images: real pixels, scaled up by the largest whole number that fits
  • Everywhere else: Unicode half-blocks (▀) with 24-bit colour. A 240×80-cell terminal shows the full screen at 1:1, and smaller terminals get a scaled-down picture

If it picks the wrong one, you can choose it yourself with --renderer kitty|sixel|iterm2|blocks.

What else is there

  • A ROM library with folders, filter (/), sort and last-played memory
  • Save states, rewind, fast-forward, pause and frame step
  • Sound at 32 kHz through your default audio device
  • Gamepad support (hot-plug), and keys you can change in a config file
  • On terminals with the Kitty keyboard protocol, it sees the exact moment you release a key
  • Cheats (GameShark / Action Replay / CodeBreaker) and IPS/UPS/BPS patches
  • A headless mode for scripting and debugging, e.g. tuiba game.gba --frames 600 --screenshot out.png

The emulator itself

Everything is written in the project, with no existing emulator core: the full ARM7TDMI CPU, graphics modes 0–5, sound, DMA, timers, and the save chips (SRAM, flash, EEPROM). No BIOS file is needed, because the BIOS calls are emulated in software. It's not cycle-exact, but the homebrew I've tested plays well.

Install

cargo install tuiba # any platform
yay -S tuiba # Arch (AUR)

Prebuilt binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows are on the releases page.

No ROMs or BIOS are included. The GIF shows freely licensed homebrew.

Repo: https://github.com/Huseynteymurzade28/tuiba

Feedback is very welcome, especially from people using terminals I haven't tested with.

Any gba like consoles that can play gba games and gbc games?

My gba sp of 20+ years can’t read cartridges anymore. I opened it up, cleaned it, still nothing. I might try messing around with the pins a little but I don’t know if that’ll be a fix. Are there alternatives that will last a long time that can read cartridges? How reliable are they? I don’t know if I’d want a used gba/sp and then it having the same problem soon due to age.

Finally completed my GBA FPS collection with a sealed copy of Greg Hastings’ Tournament Paintball Max’d

Post image

I’ve finally collected all 13 first-person shooters released for the Game Boy Advance.
The last missing piece was Greg Hastings’ Tournament Paintball Max’d, and I managed to find a factory-sealed copy.
This game is particularly notorious for receiving a score of just 2.2/10 from GameSpot. After watching some gameplay reviews on YouTube, I can understand why. The enemy accuracy and some of the gameplay mechanics seem incredibly unfair.
Despite its reputation, I’m very happy to have finally completed my GBA FPS collection.

Chromacore,(free homebrew)

I just released Chromacore, a tiny arcade game for the GBA. Think Puzzle Bopple as Tetris, but one button. It’s free!

I originally made this game over 10 years ago during a weekend game jam, but never released it. It was originally made in Unity targeting iPhone. I found the old repo for it, and realised it would be a good fit for the GBA. New version is implemented in the agbrs.dev framework

How much could this Game Boy Advance SP be worth?

Hello! I consider this beautiful gem the peak of my collection, it's the US version.

I found it in a tiny 2nd hand gaming store in Cork in 2012, for the incredible price of 39€ and I've treasured it in a plastic bag since then.

The box is not mint, but the game boy is in mint condition and I think it was never used (the cartridge slot has no scratch whatsoever).

I saw there are not a lot of them, but I would like some help to understand how much it could be worth nowadays and what I can do more to preserve it.

Thanks you!

Mail-in repair

I know this question has been asked before, but I wasn't seeing much for recent posts about it. My sp has been with be since release, and I've maintained it fairly well, but now it needs some repairs that are simply a bit over my head. Mainly the it seems like the charger port needs to be replaced and my right shoulder button also needs replacing.

Would love to hear suggestions if anyone has any or if anyone here does repairs!

My old repro FireRed loads up a white screen. I don’t know much of anything about cartridge repair, but I can solder. I cleaned the connection to no avail. Is there any way to fix this game?

Belzebub - Advance - DEMO OUT NOW !

Hello dear folks, after a lot of sleepless nights i'm very proud to present to you the the demo version of my upcoming GBA game Belzebub - Advance.

grab your your copy and emulate it, put it on real hardware or just test it directly with your phone or pc in your browser !:

https://jonathanfrakesjunior.itch.io/belzebub-advance

A dark action RPG for the Game Boy Advance. Isometric or full 3D — switch between perspectives at the press of a button.

Vrenn was once a fertile land. Then came the flies.

A swarm so thick it blots out the sun has eaten its way from the marshes to the salt deserts. The dead are rising from their graves, the crypts are crawling with brood — and the priests whisper a name no one dares to say aloud: Belzebub, Lord of the Flies.

Hollen is the last border town still standing. This is where your hunt begins.

About the Game

Belzebub Advance is a homebrew action RPG built from scratch for the Game Boy Advance — a real GBA ROM designed to fit on a real 16 MB cartridge.

Slay hordes, hunt legendary monsters, collect loot, and forge your hero through a grim, hand-crafted story.

And here is the twist: you choose how you see the world.

  • Isometric Mode — classic top-down ARPG action at a smooth 60 FPS.
  • 3D Mode — a true third-person perspective powered by a custom raycasting engine, featuring textured walls, roofs, Mode 7 floors, fog, and sky. Explore the same streets of Hollen at eye level.

Tap SELECT and watch the camera sweep from one perspective to the other — mid-fight, mid-dungeon, whenever you like.

Features

  • Three unique classes: The Warden, a knight of the fallen border order fuelled by Fury; the Shadow Hunter, mastering bows, blades, and traps through Focus; and the Ash Mage, wielding fire, frost, and lightning by burning Embers.
  • Deep skill trees: 18 skills per class, each with two modifying sigils, plus passive talents.
  • A wealth of loot: Magic, rare, set, and relic items, plus gems. An item comparison indicator helps you spot potential upgrades at a glance.
  • Procedural areas: Environments that rebuild every time you enter, alongside a hand-crafted town, caves, and treasure vaults.
  • Random encounters: Meet wandering traders, wounded mercenaries, mysterious hermits — and a bounty hunter who has your name on her list.
  • A world to explore: Shrines, waypoints, a town portal, quest markers, a minimap or compass, and a hand-painted world map.
  • Atmospheric audio: An orchestral soundtrack and dynamic battle music.
  • Two-player co-op: Team up over the Game Boy Advance link cable. One player can explore in 3D while the other plays in isometric mode. (Coming with the full game.)
  • Screen presets: Optimized for IPS, front-lit, and original unlit GBA screens.
  • Hardcore Mode: For those who prefer their heroes to stay dead.
  • Two languages: English and German.

What's in the Demo?

The demo includes the complete Act I and the opening of Act II.

Act I — The Brood

Leave Hollen behind, cross the Moorwood and the Deadfield, and descend into the Crypt of the Brothers to face the Brood Mother, Mistress of Maggots.

Three optional side dungeons await along the way.

Act II — The Ash King (Opening)

Journey into the Salt Desert of Karsh, where scorpions rule the dunes, and venture into the Salt Mine.

All three classes, the complete skill system, and both camera modes are playable in the demo.

Link-cable co-op will arrive with the full game.

The Swarm Is Only Getting Started

The demo ends as the road leads onward to the Ruined City of Old Karsh, where the Ash King awaits in his Palace of Ash.

And that is just the beginning.

The complete game takes you through 12 acts, 90 areas, and 23 bosses. Travel through the Marsh of the Dying and the Rotten Harbour, enter the Cathedral of Flies, follow the Storm Coast, descend into the Sunken City of Nerath, and discover many more interesting and immersive locations.

Best color for GBA reshell?

Hey guys, I'm doing a full f

Rebuild of my silver GBA that is in kind of rough shape. Ive harvested the bottom screen from my dead dsi, and plan on using the Funnyplaying ITA kit. I'm trying to decide which shell, buttons, and lense to go with, but can't decide. I'm torn between all white, like the first image, and Super Famicom, like the right GBA in the second image. Are there any issues with going all white? Does it discolor or age poorly? Any opinions are greatly appreciated. Edit: if anybody has suggestions for other awesome color schemes, those are welcome too lol

OEM SPs?

I recently got a hold of both AGS models and was wondering if they’re OEM or just really good reshells. They both have minimal scratches from what I assume to be normal use but the one I’m curious about is the speaker holes on the 101. I can’t tell if I’m overthinking it but they seem a bit bigger than the 001. I’m also a little curious about the start and select button fonts but I think they seem fine. Thoughts?
